Has anyone adapted and used a two point combat style carry sling for a hunting rifle? I have a standard 1.25" web sling but the past few day I was out it was somewhat of a pain, and not easy to get the gun up and ready. I saw Gil's post with the slings he'd made with the quick release and got me to wondering if something like that would work well for a hunting rig?

I sling hunting weapons the same as assault weapons, same reason as well
quick to bring to the ready. a single point is not as good as it has a tendency to swing around when hiking unless you secure it. But a cross body sling it very quick to bring to aim.

How do you attach to the rifle? I've seen some that use two loops, or do you attach the clips like assualt weapons have?
And yeah, I would think the single's would not be ideal.

I used a plain old two point and carried vertical/muzzle down. IMO that's the least likely setup to get tangled up and it's *fast* to bring to the weapon to the ready position. Problem is that it just feels awkward for 95% of people, and it can be tricky while wearing body armor. The only time I carried across the back is if I was doing something that required the use of both hands like carrying a litter or climbing an obstacle. Army says you've got to carry muzzle down - no "Elmer Fudd style" muzzle up, so that doesn't leave too many different ways to sling your rifle with a traditional 2 point sling. A three point with no quick release is a disaster waiting to happen if you ask me. There's just too much webbing to get tangled up in stuff. Single points generally more trouble than they're worth but if you want to try one, a backpack sternum strap only costs $2.99 and it's basically the same thing as a $10 "wolf hook". Not only does your weapon swing all over the place if you use a single point , it takes away the option of "buttstroking" somebody in the head during close combat - that just takes away all the fun IMO :flipoff2:
In a hunting situation my rifle's usually unslung if I'm walking so the sling's never really an issue. Years of being screamed at by grumpy old sergeants to have your weapon at "low ready" will make it feel weird to walk around with a weapon that's not ready to shoot. It just comes naturally after a while. If I hunted someplace like Alaska which required walking long distances with the ability to bring my rifle to a firing position quickly, I'd have no qualms about milling a slot in my stock so I could rig a sling like an M4 or an old M1 carbine and still carry vertical/muzzle down. That's just the carry style that works best for me and what I'm used to, everybody's different.

For backpack hunting, I have not found anything better than the kifaru gunbearer. I started using this a couple of years ago and it is slick.

Otherwise, I like the montana sling.

That gunbearer thing looks like your scope would be digging into your side all day long...

It's not as bad as the picture looks, mine rides a little further forward. There was a period of time where it took some getting used to. I don't run great big vairable scopes though...

Old thread, I know. But you can use the gun-bearer with the scope pointing to the ground. just as fast... Pull it to your shoulder and barrel roll it.

Are you using a free floated synthetic or wood stock?
How much do you care what it looks like?
Put a stud into the side of the forearm in front of your none firing hand.
Put another on the side of the but. I would place it just behind the receiver.
This would be very similar to a AR with the receiver extension plate, and a side rail mount. I would want the front mount out at the end of the forearm so you can do a sling wrap for off hand, but otherwise like this

Carry muzzle down, when it's on your back it lays flat, and the bolt handle is away from your back.

Same gun you did for me. If I was thinking I would have just had you put them in. That is probably what I will end up doing.

Ok been looking around and found some different stuff.
These guys have a Giles sling for Ruger rifles
Giles (http://www.arizonagunrunners.com/Products/Wilderness/body_wilderness.html)
One from Eagle:
Eagle Sling (http://www.eagleindustries.com/prd_detail.asp?ProdID=536&CatID=15&SubCatID=15&offset=0)
Never used any of these styles so really don't know much about any of the styles. One preferred over the other?
And there is a rear butt adapter for the Vikers Style
Rear Stock Adapter (http://www.blueforcegear.com/product.cfm?type=cat&cat_id=5&prod_id=87)
http://www.blueforcegear.com/prodImg/A2B-XX-FRONT-300.jpg
So that takes care of mounting the sling in the rear. On to the front. Currently I have the standard sling stud on the bottom of the stock. I see some adapters that would clip in but I'm thinking they would just want to rotate the front of the gun upside down.

I do have a weaver style rail I can use to mount my scope on, is there a adapter I could bolt to the weaver rail and give me a ring to attach the forward part of the sling to? I also could install a rail or stud on the side of the gun but it would be screwing into the wood stock. Is that going to hold or should it have a anchor?
