Hello,
I have an '86 CJ7 (wide track) that I busted the crap out of. Truck has 4.56 gears, teralow 4:1 in a Dana300 (twin stick), and 38" tires. long story short, the front D30 axleshafts are both wasted, but I am having them RMA'd thru Superior, as they are the alloy 297x ujoint models. It's got 4.56 gears and a Lockrite, as well as the superwinch hubs.
But, the housing is wasted, actually the right side inner (upper) knuckle where the ball join mounts is split. I can either get a new housing and swap in all my parts, including re-welding my non-stock springpads and steering stabalizer pad, or I can get someone to weld a replacement knuckle on the right side.

OR, i can junk the D30, sell all the parts off it, and get a cut-down D44. But I won't have spare axleshafts, and will have the same ujoint, basically running the risk of breaking it again.

OR, I can try to swing a dana60 front end, but that would be totally custom, expensive, and probably couldn't get it together for at least 2 months.

Ideas, suggestions?

Anybody else care to comment?

I have the new D30 alloy shafts being RMA'd right now. It's either build another "buff" D30, or upgrade to a D44/60

Don't waste your friggin time with a 44, especially not with a 30 if you're running 38's. A 60 won't be THAT much more than a 44. It'll be a lot cheaper in the long run since you won't be bustin parts all day with your bad-ass 38's and 4to1. ....Oh yeah, what the hell were you thinkin running 38's on a 30

Superior alloy axles with the "D44" Spicer 297x u-joints were in the D30, But I busted them like toys. Sucks engaging ONLY your front end on accident =\

I figured the d30 would hold up, it has for over a year. The way I busted it was kinda stupid. I could just rebuild one for cheap w/ my parts, as the axleshafts are warranteed, but I run the risk of breaking it in the future. A D44, eventually with ally shaft upgrades and the warn hub fuses, would probably be a good compromise of strength and ground clearance IMHO. How low are the D60's?
