: #89 build starts

Here's a few pictures of the start of #89. As some of you already know I'm doing this build using a early Ford bronco for a base. I have had the frame media blasted and have removed the extra brackets that I didn't need. The rear frame horns had some damage where the bumper bolts on so I cut that off and added new rear sections and a cross member for the rear spring shackles. I'm heading out next weekend to Apple Valley to pick up the fun part of the build.:D

What are rest of the specs going to be?

1sicbronconut
01-06-2008, 07:52 PM
Dana 44 front with a detroit and warn axles with CTM joints a 9" rear with a detroit 4.88 gears in both axles. Mild Ford 302 with mustang EFI and a C4 transmission with a 4.3 atlas behind that. I'm running 37" MTR's with Staun beadlocks. I'll be keeping the coils up front and I run a wristed axle housing that helps the flex out. Just keeping the leafs in the rear for right now. I think that sums it up. :D

I didn't realize that EB's have boxed framerails. Also straight from front to back--very narrow should make it easy to "inboard" the rear springs.

I'm ASSuming you've plated and welded the typical weak points on the stock brackets and frame?

EB width or fullwidth?

Must be nice to fabricate it all on a two-post lift!!

Subscribed! :D

Very nice Steve!! Looks like you moved the front spring towers forward a bit, 3-4"?? What's the WB planned?

On a side note, looks like I should be a go for this weekend, pending approval from the Spousal Unit (shouldn't be an issue).

This is cool...i thought to be an F-Toy it had to be a Toyota....I am building one out of a 78 Jeep Cherokee...i just bought the tubing and did my own cage from the blueprints on the Hendrix site....I will be watching this build!

Hey Horton, it would be cool to see your build thread. Post up. It's not an "official" rig without a Toy drivetrain anyway, but this is a budget class...it would be cool to see Jeep, Ford, Chevy spinoffs.

That's the fullsize Cherokee--Cherokee Chief? Using the entire Jeep drivetrain? 44's f&r, 360, quadratrac?

Hey Steve,

Did you ever see this build thread?:
Hendrix toy chassis 26 on an EB (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=310624)

Here's some good tech from post #10:
http://www.txwheelers.com//NickM_files/frame_specs4.jpg

Here was his last pic as of Jan 2007:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=282244&stc=1&d=1168732880

As of Nov 07, he was 4-linking the front (had 4-linked the rear) and going full hydro.

Just about have the frame and the Ftoy line up so I can get it tacked together this weekend. I don't have a front cross member to tie into, I'm thinking some .120 wall between the frame rails for a monunt. Do yoiu guy think that will be strong enough? or shound I put soem 2"x4" tube in there instead?

1sicbronconut
01-25-2008, 02:56 PM
I'm planning on using the stinger bumper/mount from my current rig. It has some beefy mounts that slid into the frame, it takes up about the front 3-4" of the front of the frame.

They are 94'-95' mustang factory units. Any of the factory Mustang units will work. Left side fits great, right side will need a great exhaust guy or do like I'm doing and modify the header itself. I'll be cutting the collector off and moving it using some 3" tube for a better fit.

Here's a few more update pictures of the steering column and the brake pedal bracket. Still not sure what I'm going to do about tying the windshield bars into the frame. As MT4runner point out my steering column placement has blocked a direct shoot from the bar to the frame. MT4Runner
09-30-2008, 03:30 PM
Your steering column mount looks relatively beefy...could you fully box it in so it carries the weight coming down from the windshield bar*...what about a section of 3" pipe for the steering column to run through--and run a tube kicker down from that pipe sleeve to the frame?

*actually, if you're on your lid, it would be the weight of your drivetrain on your frame, though that brace, and up the windshield bar to the lid!!

Sorry to hear about your dog. :(

I welded my firewall in. I couldn't really see any reason to screw it in, and I figured I'd want something solid to brace my feet--and my passengers feet--for panic stops and downhills.

I used 20ga, and welded it every ~4-5".

I haven't had to work on much yet, but don't have a lot that's not accessible from either side. Side panels, floor, and belly are all removeable.

If you do weld it, make sure you've got access to your upper bellhousing bolts.

Not yet should have the floors and plumbing done in a few weeks. I spend to much time wheeling the little Bronco, going to Big Bear for a Bronco run this week

You don't know what you're missing.
Get the F-Bronco done, and you may never drive the "little Bronco" again!!

A few updates and I'll get some pic's up during the week. My wife and I have been wanting to move back up to tha Black Hills of South Dakota (lived there in the 90's) my wife found a good job up there and has been in Rapid City working for the past two weeks so I guess I'm moving also:D We talked about moving a few years ago and I've had a open offer at the local Ford deaership since that time, so I've been busy getting the house ready to sell for the past few weeks. I've already made a few trips up there with all my projects but the F-Bronco is still in the garage so I can get some time in on it, going to take me four trips just to haul the projects up there:D Not looking forward to moving my tool box from work, it weighs about 3-4,000 pounds loaded.

Yup it was a old very cheap single layer non reinforced Bronco hood that I cut up.
