xrayjeeper83 01-06-2008, 07:03 PM I dont own a landrover but might be looking at one soon(getting out of jeeps) what is the max(smartly) size tire a stock landrover axle can handle?
also anything specific I should look out for? Its a 95 disco II
Thanks
Pugsly 01-06-2008, 07:17 PM I know one person running Trxus 34s under his D2, they work really well for him and he has not done an axle swap... But of course fender trimming is required.
Just lifting you can get 32 but not much more.
stock I don't even know.
The axles are all open diff semi floaters, with traction control so it is relatively hard to break stock axles until you upgrade the diffs. You'll break off air dam and bumper bits much sooner.
DiscoDino 01-06-2008, 07:35 PM If it is a 95, then it is a Disco 1...
If its a Disco 1, you can fit 37s on it with a combination of a suspension/body lift (or only suspension) with flares
If you want to run 37s, then you are best to do the Toy conversion if you want to keep the stock suspension components/geometry
If you want to do the Toy conversion then the axle limitations will be similar to what the Toy dudes are facing, except with an unhealthy V8 and somewhat/maybe heavier truck
Enjoy
Pugsly 01-06-2008, 07:50 PM Doh, I wasn't paying attention. P38 launched (USA) in 95 not the D2.
PTSchram 01-07-2008, 07:51 AM Anything over 32" with stock guts is risky. There is a fellow who sometimes hangs around here who went through four rear diffs and three front diffs running 35s!
XtremeMarine 01-07-2008, 08:11 AM Your original question asked about stock. So I'll answer with stock, not with, "if you change...". A DI (94-99), has the full floating axles, and the lockable transfer case. You can safely run 32's, or 265/75/16's on your vehicle. You will need minor trimming, and no lift. Or no trimming, and a 2 inch lift. If you are going to off-road it here in Florida, I would stick with this size. With a combination of 2 inch lift and minor trimming, you can fit 33's, or 285/75/16's on the stock wheels, with the stock axles. If you were going for looks only, or beach driving, sugar sand, etc..., you would be okay with this route. 33's are questionable in the mud, where you might get some wheel spin, and then instant traction on a tree root, or rock which you didn't know was there. Then the axle bind could ruin your day.
xrayjeeper83 01-07-2008, 09:50 AM So what Im getting is the stock axles are pretty weak.
XtremeMarine 01-07-2008, 10:07 AM I'd spend the 800.00 up front and get the HD axles for the rear. With the locking CDL, at least you could limp out in RWD. Then, as well, you can run 33's or 34's safely. I would not even think of going 35 or larger unless you ran HD front and rear.
xrayjeeper83 01-07-2008, 04:08 PM Alright I did a quick search(which im not good at) and came up empty. Who sells the HD shafts?
DiscoDino 01-07-2008, 04:57 PM www.rovertrack.com
xrayjeeper83 01-07-2008, 05:35 PM That site didnt seem to work

My springs are older, but i am running a two inch lift (safari gard) to run 265. I also had to play around with the backspacing and trim fenders. Just some thoughts, i also have gernaded the third member.
funrover 01-07-2008, 07:00 PM 245 75 16 is a great size for totally stock! With a litlle trimming 235 85 16 will be great! You can get a lot done on that size! Currently I am running 295 75 16 on my stock 10 spline!
xrayjeeper83 01-07-2008, 07:34 PM so can you just drop in a yota V6 3rd to get rid of the rover 3rd? from the sounds of it its the 3rd thats a big weak link
RoverDan 01-08-2008, 05:59 AM The third is a weak link, they can be built but it's not cheap. Rovertracks has a cost comparison on their website. I know folks running built rover diffs with 34s and 35s. But they are also careful in how they drive it.
XtremeMarine 01-08-2008, 08:07 AM Besides RoverTraks, you can also get the HD components from Bill Davis at Great Basin Rovers, in SLC, Utah. His Number is (801) 486-5049. Good luck.

LOL, Mike at ECR will argue that it isn't that expensive to make them bulletproof. I'm not sure I agree with him, though.

b4wscrambler 01-08-2008, 01:41 PM Can you put a Toy 3rd in the front and run the stock CV. I want to run 4.10 but have no need for the bling CV at this time. So can you get a 30 pline iner and run a 10spline(?) outer?
I just got the Rover so forgive my NEWB.
FrankenRover 01-08-2008, 01:44 PM <sigh> polishing turds makes baby jesus cry.

East coast bulletproof ≠ West coast bulletproof
I agree with Bill.

Yep, call Rovertracks (not sure about 10 spline, but definitely 24 spline)...
Since you are getting axles ANYWAY, why not get the 30/30 axles, and run crappy/used/stock/OEM Toy CVs for now and then go bling when needed...
HandBuilt 01-08-2008, 03:04 PM No can do, the stocker Toyo stuff is 27 at the axleshaft end...
DiscoDino 01-08-2008, 03:12 PM No can do, the stocker Toyo stuff is 27 at the axleshaft end...
Yeah, my bad...30/27 axles then and use stockers and then upgrade to Chromo Longs...
b4wscrambler 01-08-2008, 03:35 PM I just called RT and they are closed until later in the week. I did not think to us stock toy CV. Is that shaft available, 30 to 27 spline to use the stock birf.
cptyarderho 01-09-2008, 01:31 PM I ran 34s on my stock axles, ate three rear diffs. With a locker and some HD shafts you should be good up to 35 on a trail rig. For pure rock crawling forget it.
b4wscrambler 01-09-2008, 07:18 PM My Rover has 235 85s on it now. I want to put a locker in the rear just because it seems like the right thing to do. It's low on power as is so 4.10s seem like a good upgrade to do at the same time. I already have a 24 spline rear.
The rear seems like a know brainer to upgrade to the Toy stuff, for just a little more money have a stronger rear with the toy stuff. The front i'm not so sure what to do. Right now there is no plan for a locker but that could change in the future.
