: help, engine problem.....
mud-magnet 06-30-2002, 06:45 PM ok, first, to all you fawken newbies that are going to smack down on this one i did the search........ notta......:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
now, its the stock early 88 1.3L......... its smoken, but its not oil smoke, its really white smoke, and i can't keep coolant in the rad...... and its not leaking on the ground, so someone at the zuki-fest said thats its most likely a blown head gasket......... and once my water goes down it runs right hot (as you probility figured)...... so i gotta wait till it cools and add more water, i can't open it when its hot or i'll get fried buy the steem and extreamly hot water........... i'm leaning towards a head gasket, so i'm going to pull the plugs and see if they look a little different in one cyl. then take a compression test to each cyl. and if i see a bit of water, or something in there i'll get a gasket, but its still out at the trail right now....... gotta show someone the trail for possible rock-crawling run with his club he' lives about 5hours away, so dosn't want to travel down this far with all the members of the club expecting extream rockcrawls and find out its not as extream as he would like, but anyways..........
thanks for any input.....

lojones 06-30-2002, 06:56 PM white smoke = water
Sounds like youve got the problem handled
mud-magnet 06-30-2002, 07:11 PM so i take it your saying head gasket too right????:D
and just cause i'm in need of help, i'm not going to flame........   or maybe i'm just getting soft....:D
thanks again
Rockrat 06-30-2002, 07:53 PM Head gasket but when you pull it check the head really good for any hairline cracks pullin it once is bad twice is A BIG PITA
weezman1 06-30-2002, 08:52 PM I'd say the same, I had that happen to my Chevy truck... same symptoms.
tZUKnami 06-30-2002, 09:10 PM Inspect the head really well for warpage. If you found out that it get's really hot the heat may have gotten to it. Good luck.
Shawn_C 06-30-2002, 09:57 PM Can't you pressure test your coolant system to tell if you have a leak between cyl's. I would also vote for head gasket. Depending on how hot it got it might be worth your while just to get it looked at anyway, good excuse to get a valve job done and ground a little as well.
glad you used the search this time you fawkin wheeler :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
jones 06-30-2002, 11:17 PM I had the same experience and luckily didn't warp the head. Mine was caused by an extremely plugged rad.:D

Orionn 07-01-2002, 11:55 AM Definatly the Gasket...are you getting water in the oil as well? sometimes you will get a crossover from the water jacket to the oil journals, look under the fill cap for a chocolat colored foamy deposite or on the Oil dipstick for the same. the plugs will show large white to tannish deposites on the electrodes and ceramic. Just be forewarned, Antifreeze and your O2 sensor make a bad combination.......the coolant will kill the O2 sensor outright. pull the codes after you get the gasket fixed to check and see if the O2 sensor is working.
Like they all said B4 me, check the head while its off for warpage and cracks, and if you have the $$$, you might as well go through the rest of the cooling system (more time than $$). better to be safe than sorry.
peace :D
Ps...if I remember right  make sure you get the head gasket on RIGHT!!! it can be put on backwards, killing off one or more oil journals, and killing the main bearings in a matter of minutes!!!! :nuke:
Be sure all the journals (water and oil) are visable through the gasket befor you reassemble the head!!
good luck :D
mud-magnet 07-01-2002, 01:34 PM i don't belive mine has an O2 sencer, i don't think any early 88 and older ones had them........ at least not here in canada......:D
DougO 07-01-2002, 03:14 PM Have you overheated it already? Sounds like it .. if you can, when ya do the head gasket try the best you can to check for block deck warpage, and maybe bring the head to a machine shop to see if they can check the head for warpage .. it is Aluminum afterall, and doesnt take well to overheating.:(
mud-magnet 07-01-2002, 03:51 PM no, i watched that alot, when ever it got to just before the little mark on the guage i shut it off and let it cool then filled it with coolant........

once you get to the "little mark on the gauge" its too late.
If you shut the truck off when it hits 250 degrees, it will climb higher.
