: power steering woes...

My setup is, 92 YJ with a crappy rough country 2 and 1/2 lift, and still a dana 30 in the front turning 33" TSLs. My power steering sounds like a moose being molested most of the time. I checked the fluid and it was a little low, added some and the noise is not so loud anymore but still noticeable to me. When I check the reservoir I did notice that there were a ton of bubbles in the fluid. If I am hearing correctly, the bubbles are bad. Everything is stock for steering right now. I was wondering if anyone knew of a fix to keep turning these 33s until I got bigger and hopefully full hydro, if not at least ram assist.

Thanks in advance,
g.schucks

Sounds like there is air in your P. S. system and needs to be bled. Get your front wheels off the ground, turn lock to lock a few times with the motor running then shut it off and let it sit til the bubbles are gone. top off the reservoir and do it again. The noise should decrease as the air leaves the system. Keep doing it until the noise is gone and there are no more bubbles.

The reservoir doesn't need to be capped when doing this does it? Will it hurt to over fill this?

Thanks for the help,

If you overfill it will just come out...the cap has a breather.

If you drive it for a bit and the bubbles don't come out, you probably have a loose clamp or a bad hose on the low pressure side. If there is any question in your mind, I would just replace it...cheap insurance.

if that doesn't fix it then your box might be bad... you can rebuild them... but in my opinion it's not worth it... it's easier to just get a remanned box... most parts stores have life time warranties on the boxes...

Thanks for the advice on getting the front off the ground. After adding some fluid I have no more bubles and the pump is not but barely audible anymore. No more dieing wildlife noises.

Thanks,
