BoDuke25 01-12-2012, 07:07 PM It's not done yet, I still have to add tool boxes in front of the rear axle and I'd like to put a bathroom in the sleeper.
3126 CAT, 275 horse power, 9 speed, 3.55 gears, 7 mpg. 200 gallon fuel capacity.
Ramps store up under the rear deck, enclosed box is 16' long. Will cruise 70 real easy in most conditions. Anything over a 4% grade and I'm down to 35 miles and hour. But I have a 1400 mile fuel range so I don't stop much.
I've been waiting for you to post pics of that rig :grinpimp:
78stepsideUAK10 01-12-2012, 08:21 PM What are the specs on your truck? I like the way it sits with the new wheels and tires.
It's a 2wd with a leveling kit and 275/65r20 BFG rugged terrains
I'm probably going to make it 4wd soon, so it will be probably 4" taller then
4-rocks 01-13-2012, 08:25 AM I've been waiting for you to post pics of that rig :grinpimp:

Really considering doing the sleeper thing on the uhaul and flatbedding the rest. If i could find a cheap sleeper shell I think that would seal the deal.

mrtoddb 01-18-2012, 07:58 PM My new one helping a buddy with his. Was really surprised at how well it handled it. Knew it could, but didn't think the 6.0 gasser would have as much oomph as it did.

Seeing that load behind a 3126 makes me cringe......I know your pain.
4-rocks 01-20-2012, 08:47 PM For the most part it does real well, just a few places between Denver and Vail I really struggle. I'm usually in good company over in the right hand lane with all the semi trucks. We're all going about the same speed.
406 YJ 01-20-2012, 09:10 PM My DD. My father and I each put around 100,000 miles a year on a truck. I just traded in my 08' on this one. In 2 years she will have over 200,000 on it. I have had great luck with Dodge. 4wd 2011.

Roll the bronco back about 2 feet and it will tow much better, and the nose of the truck wont be pointing up in the air.

How does the truck run now with all the deletes and upgrades performed?
Steimy 01-21-2012, 01:55 PM I down graded trucks and bought a fifth wheel camper that is 1/2 ton towable. I had a 04' extended cab Duramax, sold it and got an 11' Crewcab Z71 so the kiddos would be more comfortable riding. The new truck tows the 5er pretty well but I have to remove the tailgate when I tow it because the bed is only 5'8" and the pinbox would hit it when the slider is in the rear-most position. I have been looking into a Reese sidewinder pin box but for almost a grand I can just take the tailgate off.

I dont have to agree with the diesel, but I wouldnt pull that with a half ton, the suspension is just not built for it.

Even if it's 2,500 or close to 3k lbs heavier than that wet in actuality it very well could be at the rated capacity. You can easily option a new 1/2t rated to tow 9-10klbs.
Machinos 01-23-2012, 08:40 AM Maybe you should post your truck and camper in the BDL thread and see what he says there.

Agreed, I bet with a weeks worth of supplies its close to 9.5-10k. Stuff adds up quickly. My parents 5th wheel is supposed to weight just short of 2K less than it actually does. Thats bone dry and empty, They bought it new and hauled it across the scales. Just dont believe the dry weight unless you weigh it yourself.

Nice looking rig, wish I could find one in that good of shape.
4-rocks 02-02-2012, 06:04 AM Build thread please, what are the measurements? Box? cab+sleeper, fifth wheel flat bed area? Overall length?
The truck started out with a 24' box that I cut down to 16', width inside the box is just a little over 8'. The sleeper is 7X6 outside measurements. Total length is 38' if I remember correctly. Front bumper to pin is 36'. I don't have any pictures but I'll try to explain how it works. The framework for the hitch slides inside the frame rails of the truck, on the front of the framework I placed two 2 5/16 goose neck balls. This is what the hitch pivots on when it floats. I built a support to the rear of the framework so I could mount as many as 3 air bags. I use two large bags and that seems to be about right at 60-90 psi. I raise the air pressure in the bags if the road gets rough. So the top half of the hitch rides on balls in the front and air bags in the rear. I also installed shocks to the rear to dampen the action of the top part of the hitch. The top half of the hitch pivots on the two balls, it's just a plate that I braced up an fixed it so a 5th wheel hitch would bolt into it. I'll look to see if I took any pictures of it while I built it.
The deck on the rear is just a box that slides down over the outside of the frame rails of the truck, 6 X 8.5' I used the metal 4" I beams left over from shortening the box for the floor supports. I think they are on 8" centers, I took two 4" X 3/8" angle irons and laid them on the truck frame, beaver tailed the last 2 feet and then laid the I beams across them, squared them all up and welded them in place. I then took 2X3 rectangular tube and welded them on top of the I beams on the sides for strength, built a rear bumper, added sides and then welded deck plate on the top and plated the rear bumper.

I've had a number of requests for pictures of the hitch, some people think I've built something that won't work and others just want to see it so I took as good a picture as I could. You can see the shank of the two 2 and 5/16 balls. These are rated at 35,000 lbs each. I also have two safety chains on the top side just in case something breaks. The top half of the hitch pivots up and down on the balls and is cushioned by the two air bags on the rear. The factory built 5th wheel hitch bolts onto the floating plate.

^ Definitely more info on the trailer. It looks good.. V-Nose, living quarters, possible toy hauler section.
aaron68 02-09-2012, 03:48 PM Thanks. The trailer is a 2003 33' Innovator with 14' of living quarters, and a 19' garage with a bunk bed. It's has a 12k lb gvwr. The door is about 1/2" taller than my buggy. The bathroom is in the V-Nose with a full shower, it's not one of those shower toilet combo units. I don't think the manufacture is in business anymore. I've only seen one like it and it was listed for sale on racingjunk. It's a really well built trailer. I was told they used to manufacture trailers for Nascar and only made a few of these smaller custom trailers.

The diffs are geared quite low (6.83), so I also bought some Goodyear MVT 395/85R20 with Hutchinson beadlocks from Stazworks. This will give me a better cruising speed.
I will be hauling the mud truck on the deck and pulling my 34' travel trailer.

I think the power will be fine with the gearing. I will find out when I finally pick it up in April.
I did get a few quotes to redo the interior, but I decided not to do it right now. Maybe in the future.

Still doesn't explain why he went FORD. He could have bought another Dodge and then had 2 Dodges, one lifted, one not. Thus I didn't ask what he didn't like about pulling lifted, but rather "Why did you trade the Dodge for the Ford ?", as in why are you pulling with a Ford and not a Dodge.
But thanks for chiming in, chithead.

The Ford pulls the trailer 10 times better, I always thought the dodge pulled good but after towing with the Ford i am simply amazed, I have 3400 miles on the truck and 1800 of them are towing the trailer. I averaged 9.7 mpg on the 1800 mile towing trip runnig 75 and I am getting 15.8 around town so far. I think the fuel mileage is great considering the F-450 has the 4:30 gears.

I wouldn't really call that green W150 a first gen. First gen implies it's a cummins powered dodge, otherwise a first gen Dodge truck is from the '20s.

rockwellyj 03-20-2012, 06:30 PM What is up with the leafs in the '11s and newer ? Every one I see hooked to a 5er is squatting, some of them quite a bit. Is that an F250 or F350 ? What is the pin weight on the trailer ?
little late on a reply....... F250... Pin weight is 3300#. Its a heavy sucker up front. it also holds 110 gallons of freshwater. The tanks sit about in the center from the pin to the trailer axles. This trailer squats this ford less than it did my megacab dually. Pulls like a dream, even stock im happy.

Just picked this up - '06 Chevy 2500HD ECSB 4x4, 6.0 Vortec, 5 speed manual
Haven't towed with it yet but I expect it to do pretty good. The 6.0 feels alot more powerful ahead of the NV4500 compared to the 4L80E.

alex211 04-04-2012, 12:11 AM Picking this old ford up tomorrow, 76 f250. It's my buddys old truck, he's getting the 390/4 speed out of it. I'm planning on finding a 12 valve to swap in it along with either a nv4500 or nv5600. Should be a neat ride when I get it driving.

I dont blame you I stayed with 265s for the exact same reason.
MNorby 04-07-2012, 08:59 PM I just took the 315s off and went to a 285 on my 3.55 geared 12v. Didn't really notice much difference but on average have lost a mpg or two.

Nice! Were you able to squeeze 10 mpg out of her while towing?
the_white_shadow 04-12-2012, 09:29 AM It got about 9.5 going 70 most of the way on 1-10 last weekend to San Antonio. If I stay around 60 I can get 10+. But going 60 is no fun. Im taking it to Gilmer next weekend for the jambo so Ill see what she does. The 35s only dropped the mileage 1mpg when towing. (all other times it dropped it about 3.5) Ah well. Wouldnt change it.
lowerd96 05-08-2012, 01:43 PM I'm all the way back on page 72, so here is an update. It's eaten a radiator, steering box, and it's going back in again for the popping HVAC Blend Doors-- 60,800 on the clock...All in all it's been a good truck so far. Marginal mileage with 12mpg towing our wakeboard boat, somewhat decent 15ish unloaded as it sits in this pic...

DasLandRoverMan 05-09-2012, 02:32 AM Here's what I use for most of my heavy towing at the moment.
http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq328/DasLandRoverMan/3dca5318.jpg
It's a 300 Tdi Auto in ES spec, with no real mods asides having the fueling turned up a bit, and a twin battery setup to help the winch along.
My favourite one out of the back catalogue was this:
http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq328/DasLandRoverMan/Image467.jpg
A GS spec 101 Forward Control, again nothing particularly fancy, although it got an injected 3.9 and auto box out of a Range Rover within 6 months of buying it.
A really solid towing platform that was also quite a fun truck in general.
http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq328/DasLandRoverMan/IMG_0257.jpg
I cut down an old canvas to make something resembling a king cab pickup (really warm in winter) whilst it was even better with no roof in the summer.
http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq328/DasLandRoverMan/Image501.jpg
And on occasions battlefield stripped.
http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq328/DasLandRoverMan/P290309_1843.jpg
A big regret selling it, but it got to a point it needed a full rebuild and numerous issues sorting as it was giving grief every time it went out, and I didn't have the money to throw at it.
However, the guy who bought it did, and got me to do the work for him.
It left me for its new home looking like this.

Apologies for the crap lighting in the last photo.

zukota 05-12-2012, 04:57 AM Update:
Went from this 2001 CTD.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Jghq2QQTTYs/T60xaD_GOBI/AAAAAAAAB1o/LOdDIaCqFp4/s640/1000001121.JPG
I don't tow a lot, maybe 4 times a year and usually short distance. So the CTD was overkill for a DD, and my job requires some random trips into the city - parking that dodge in Washington DC is almost impossible, its actually easier to park in NYC. Tundra is giving me 14mpg mixed urban / rural - zero highway.
The dump trailer load is 15,900# Gross, truck handled it as well as the dodge would have (air bags and Es on the toy). The 5.7 did fine - never needed to get above 2500 rpm, and I did some steep grades - it's not a diesel, but I wasn't missing it. Plus, I was able to have a normal conversation with my wife at the same time.
Couldn't be happier! :grinpimp:

I was warned by the tire guy that I got the setup through that I will be trading them off for 17's in a month because they are terrible to balance and ride horrible. He was shocked at how well these tires balanced out. My worst tire took 7oz to balance. the best was 1.5 oz. They ride smooth and no vibrations up to 80mph (fastest I have gone), you hear some very slight road noise. I really like them, the ride is slightly stiffer than stock, but the handling and peace of mind outweighs the negatives. I don't regret going to 19.5s.

thats good to hear... did you go with wheel weights or beads? and what is the load rating?
shadowgamesxj 05-18-2012, 08:27 AM stick on wheel weights, and load range F iirc. Thought about beads but these balanced very well.
AbramsM1 05-18-2012, 10:40 AM 06 F350, leveled it before I got a camper which was a mistake. Engine rebuilt 4K miles ago, headstuds, tow tune, coolant filter, 4" straight exhaust, upgraded air filter, that's about it.
First camper and first tow rig. I really like the 6.0 so far. Old truck was a 05 2500 Power Wagon, turned that into trail only duty.

...just need to buy my own trailer now.
Still have this truck. Bought a trailer in February(?) 2007 and also a daily driver XJ in April 2007 so the truck is only used to tow or haul. Have 65,000 miles on it now and have replaced the shocks, ball joints(under warranty), tires, and the driver's side electric lock motor thing. Overall I'm vary happy with the truck, especially since it was paid off last year.

Turn the wheeler around and get less tongue weight.
I'll probably just add airbags, but I'm thinking a WDH is the "right" way to even things out. I never had to worry about tongue weight when I had the F250, so I'm debating what I'll go with. I'd prefer to not have to worry about dealing with the WDH setup every time I tow a tongue heavy trailer.
That toolbox probably weighs 350+ lbs, so that's not helping anything. Plus I have a full size cooler against the tailgate with 50+ lbs of drinks and ice. I have maybe 1' of play reposition the truck on the trailer, so I can dial it in a little. I always towed tongue heavy with the F250, and I haven't moved the truck since. So far I'm definitely pleased with switching over to the new truck. Night and day difference for a DD truck.
