Keep putting Dodge parts in that GMC and you'll make a truck out of it!

That's cool! A customer of mine just did a Cummins swap in his early 80's crew cab, 4wd Chevy with an NV4500. Really turned out nice. Wish I had some pics.

Funny you mention that........the only Dodge part I used is the tranny and at that DTT is mostly in there :D

its more like Frankentruck than anything. Cummins does the shaking, NewProcess does the Tcase, Dana does the rear D80. Alcoa does the rims for Freightliner.

It would have looked exactly like this???????? this is a buddy of mines. VE pumped 12v Chev. 9" lift, 35"s

and his VE pumped SFA Shorty

sure thats his wifes driver actually. that one is actually a chev shorty bodyswapped onto a '93 2500 4wd dodge QC truck that was rolled. the dodge frame was shortened to correct wheelbase for the chevy short box. so basically frame down is Dodge, frame up is Chevy. its on 37" ircos D60 front D70 rear, automatic, leafs frt/RR.....everything stock dodge of that year.

I just picked this up a couple weeks ago...
its not gonna get me cross country, or across the continental divide... its a compromise between a family hauler and a jeep hauler. I dont expect to win any races with it, but it will be adequate for the trips I need to make (most within 2 hours of home)

with a WD hitch and a brake controller it will get me around the south-east though.

and I'll probably be renting a u-haul trailer rather than buying my own. For $49 a day I can do ALOT of renting before I'll come close to the cost of buying and keeping a trailer at a storage facility (not enough room at home to park a trailer :-\ )

05 tahoe, 5.3, 4wd.

That 5.3 might surprise you. I had that in my last truck, and as long as I kept it under ~8,000#, she towed pretty good.

y2knole
02-13-2009, 10:29 AM
Ive talked with a few folks in my local club that have towed with the 5.3 with good luck.

I needed an SUV style, and the only diesel in that category is the expedition which is WAY too huge for my needs.

just towing a TJ and trailer shouldnt get me above about 5800-6000 total, so this should do the trick.

Here's my rig. It's an '01 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins, of course. It's tweaked a bit (Edge, Airdog, air filter, exhaust, built tranny, etc.) and it splits daily driving duty with the Jeep. I've kept the exterior mild and focused more on "mods that matter". :flipoff2: Empty it's given me 21 mpg on the hwy and towing it delivers 13 +/-2mpg based on conditions, speed, etc. I absolutely love this truck. I got it almost a year ago and it's now got about 161k on it.

My first tow rig (got tired of bangin' her up in the whoops, etc.--she's mostly my daily driver now) 2004 Chevy Silverado SS, AWD (yup, she spins two diffs...), 6.0, Power PCM, Shift kit, headers, intake, yada yada yada...:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/Erwin8r/GlamisMemDay2008.jpg

My wife's 2WD Yukon (also called to tow duty on occasion, but has the dubious distinction of having been stuck at Dumont, Glamis, AND Pismo):

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/Erwin8r/1206989410.jpg

And my new (to me) tow rig (Ford F350 4x4 Crew Cab, Long Bed, 460, 5-speed manual, D60/Sterling, etc...). Old? Sure. And the interior is nowhere near as nice as the SS', but she has nice low gears, a cool manual trans, and can tow my goods to the desert without a care in the world. Oh, and I own her outright! :smokin:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/Erwin8r/DSCN1863.jpg

I wouldn't mind it so much if the truck was a 7.3 PS or IDI, but it's the 460 gas... LOL!! I'll kep it on there until I need to remove it (when I do the springs/shocks swaps, and line the bed).

I towed with the Tahoe last weekend, and was blown away.

rented a u-haul trailer (2000#) and loaded my TJ up on it (3600-2800#???)

from atlanta went south east through relatively flat country... 4 hours total, to the trail and back. she did just fine and averaged 12.3mpg

My new'ish towrig. So far I've gone through 05 PSD 6.0, 07 6.7 cummins and 5.9. Now i trading for a Duramax. I put a Edge Juice with Attitude, AFE stage 3 intake and Diamond eye 4" turbo back with a cat eliminator and a Aero muffler. Love the sound and performance. Just dyno'd it yesterday and put 370 HP and 740 ft-lb to the tires.

Thanks and yes I had a lot of problems.

6.0 - turbo, rear main seal, and multiple boost line fittings not to mention poor power and breakdowns nearly every time I towed.

6.7 MegaCab cummins - 4 DPF exhaust replacements and 6 injectors in the first 8000 miles totalling $28,000. All under warrantee but after multiple breakdowns I canned the truck.

5.9 - Hated the interior, bad transmission, overall just disliked ever driving the truck because of the poor/cramped interior. Not so much from mechanical but interior was my biggest complaint.

I have 20 000 miles+ on my two place tag trailer. 34' deck.

have towed it with an Excursion, F350 DRW, Avalanche 2500 and Chevy 2500 HD. Primarily with fullsize wheelin rigs. (some miles with a Sami and a Dodge ram though).

Its nice with the dually, the 3/4 tons require more careful weight distrubution. The Ex was a little wallowy, but the Chevys do well.

I haven't towed 2 rigs yet, all that I've towed so far with the trailer is a set of four 12' long cement cattle feed bunks that supposedly weighed in at 1,500 a piece. The truck handled it wonderfully, I was just more worried about the tires on the trailer since they weren't at full pressure. I was under the impression that these feed bunks would be lighter tubular bunks, but oh well.

Nice truck seems like a light load for that duty !

Langford04PSD
04-12-2009, 05:52 PM
I'm in Michigan.

A lot of states on the east coast have pretty strict laws about how far the tires can stick out past the fenders, a buddy of mine got busted because his stuck out more than 2" from his fender in PA.

That picture was before I added the spacers, so the tires stick out 2" further now than they did there. The offset on those wheels put the tires a little too close to the leaf springs, so I could only turn about 3/4 crank. My old wheel and tire setup stuck out more than those ones do, so the flares really came in handy to keep the garbage off of the side of the truck...

Will24
04-12-2009, 06:15 PM
x2 on the east coast bushwackers... I have no choice but to run them on my 93 toyota, the tires would stick out about 2" without them, and our bored local cops would surely pull me over...

My girlfriend daily drives the truck, she's been pulled over in 6 different townships over bumper height alone! PA for class 2 trucks is 26"-30" for "some part of the horizontal bumper bar", the truck is 29 13/16" at the bottom of the rear bumper... it was over a bit before the springs settled.

Here is my rig. It tows awesome but since my Jeep is being rebuilt right now and is getting full widths I had to sell my bumper pull and am getting a gooseneck deck over and will be adding a camper to the front of it so I am planning on a new exhaust and some power goodies for the tow truck. The boat is the heaviest thing I have ever pulled with the truck, got about 7mpg pulling it. Its 32 ft, 300 gal. of fuel, beer & ice = HEAVY!!!

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i49/KrisKelso/DSC05272.jpg

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i49/KrisKelso/Misc/DSC06613.jpg

Well, I thought I had put my new rig in here, searched my name and came up with the above from back in 06, LOL.

A lot has changed since then.:smokin:

Just like it says above, I did end up getting a gooseneck:

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i49/KrisKelso/Mega%20Run%2008/022908_10111.jpg

Ended up getting tired of pulling such heavy loads and tired of buddies arguing over whose rig goes on trips with me.

So I sold it and downsized, ended up with this 22ft Diamond C hauler:

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i49/KrisKelso/Misc/041608_12303.jpg

Loved the Diamond C but found it to be too low for getting into my deer lease, was dragging it and tearing it up, so I sold it too.

Finally, fed up with trailers I bit the bullet and had one custom made to my specs. I had Rolls-Rite out of Florida build it for me.

20 ft deck, drive over fenders, 14K capacity, brakes on both axles, neck lengthened to 6ft, basket behind tool box but in front of deck, slide in ramps, reverse lights, Bull Dog 2-5/16 hitch, etc.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i49/KrisKelso/Trailer%20Pics/IMG00017-20090202-1319.jpg

I have since mounted that Jeep spare under the deck along with 2 trailer spares.

And I also upgraded my tow rig because I have plans for another larger goosneck to put a camper on.

New rig: 2008 CTD Laramie, airbags, gauges, 22.5's, 4.56 gears, B&W turnover ball:

It has both, LOL. Its the 6spd auto:flipoff2:

Right now overhead shows about 12, but its not right, I need to hand calculate it. Towing I'll get about 10, but thats doing 75-85 mph. It still has the EGR and DPF intact for now. Later this year I will do a turbo back 5" exhaust, EGR delete, and a Smarty box. That should make a big difference in mileage.

Well this wasnt my rig, but a family member who has long passed.

76 Jeep Wagoneer with a V6 "Screamin Jimmy" diesel in it. not sure of any thing else with the drive train... I know it was still 4wd. The back tailgate was removed and a garage door style roll up was put in. had a 70 gallon fuel cell in the back with 4 deep cycle batteries (guess they needed that many jus to crank her over) It was used for hauling a 30 some foot Bols-Arrow camper cross country. The thing is still in the family but i have never seen it run. would be a sick rig to tow with though.

Here's my first tow rig. Picked it up a few weeks ago for $2500.

'93 GMC 3500HD - 6.5, 4L80E, Dana 80 with 4.63 gears, 84,000 miles.

The stock W/T grille was busted up, so I am swapping grilles to the composite headlight style. In the middle of replacing the stock water pump with the later model 130 GPH version, replacing the harmonic balancer/pulley and a few other things to make it more reliable. I'm working on acquiring a 12v Cummins in case the 6.5 goes.

Yeah, I've built some trucks with stacks, they are fun, I agree. But... I used a truck with stacks to tow 12k worth of hay 250 miles on a gooseneck and I was ready to kill myself... I have 4" side exit on my tow rig, it's loud enough...

Anyways I got much better pics then the guy I suspect......
Theres a bunch more flaws with more detail tha the 1st guy showed us.

Dont get me wrong I loved the rig & did Buy it! :smash

& to be honest besides him seeming unwilling to bend on price, I felt I could trust him even though he made comments he & there...... But I'm an very untrusting person..

On the drive home I was sooooooo happy with the effort!
This is AWESOME rig so far! ( 5 hours into it. )

Runs very well & the gauges shows good stats & the suspension is much better than I suspected it would be.

The A/C kicks Ass!

& I'm already falling in love with this truck.

Funny thing is, on my way home I stopped by a friends place & he told me it was the strangest truck he's ever seen! LOL!!!!!

Any ways, The truck does have me very happy 5 hours into it.

Here is mine. 01 with 6" lift and 36's. I remove the third row seat and fit a full sixe air mattress for camping. I will be putting in my Hypertech chip, intake and straight pipe, and 2.5" leveling kit when I get back. She pulls nicely as it is. I can only imagine how much better it will be with a few more mods.

Man I hope everyone was ok. That was one hell of a hit. I'm guessing everyone was ok as you notice the roof was not cut off, usually they will cut it off to get the bodies out injured or dead. That sucks big time.

Heres something a little different for all you Americans. We didnt really get the big rigs you got. Only the F250 untill about 06... And even then they are still outrageously priced
I tow my 60ser trail pig with a 2001 Holden Jackaroo (Isuzu Trooper) with the 3.5L v6 and a 5spd on 32" muds. I was sceptical to how well it would tow but went really well last weekend for the first time! Used a shitload of fuel but didnt even struggle with easy 2.5T behind it. Once the exo goes on the 60 i think it will be time to upgrade though...:smokin:

2002 Dodge 2500 24v 6spd QDCab LWB
Fass150
Edge Juice with Attitude
Exhaust Brake
S&B Filter set up
Strait Pipe
Gauges

I got 20.5 mpg's on the way home calculated by hand, the Truck should have done better but I hit a bunch of road work and WV is uphill in every direction, truck runs and pulls great, plenty of pedal left even in 6th gear running 70mph uphill.

Here's a pic of my tow rig taken during last year's trip out to Moab. It's a '04 Dodge 2500 CTD QC/LB 4x4 with the 6 speed manual. I've done way too much to it (upgraded turbo, exhaust manifold, exhaust, intake, intake manifold, clutch, exhaust brake, filtration, programmer, etc.) and am liable to do a lot more. Just dyno'd 516/983 about 2 weeks ago. Got a new CP3 coming in the next few weeks and I should brake 550-575 and 1100. Thing tows great and gets great mileage...gotta love the CTD!

I've had if for a year but I don't think I have put a pic up of the new rig in action. Replaced an '05 Tundra Ltd. DC.
It is an '08 LE, every option except middle captains chairs-- I wanted the split bench which also has a console but seats an extra person... and that was kind of the point replacing the Tundra.
I don't have a chain and binder that I usually run from the front tow hooks down to the deck of the trailer-- I was only going 30 miles and I did not want to put any extra stress on the front pass. side since there is currently no airbag in place to support that corner-- it is sitting on the bumpstop.

Pulled about 6K of trailer/wood today with my 06 ltd DC. Little slow off the line, but otherwise did great, and pulled about 12mpg. First time with the weight distributing hitch as well. What a miraculous device that is!!! Will never tow w/o it again.

08 rolln on 37s no lift

Pulled about 6K of trailer/wood today with my 06 ltd DC. Little slow off the line, but otherwise did great, and pulled about 12mpg. First time with the weight distributing hitch as well. What a miraculous device that is!!! Will never tow w/o it again.

I miss my Tundra. If they made the new Platinum with a front split bench so that the MaxCab could seat 6, I would go down and buy a new one in a heartbeat. I thought my superlong '05 DC was the nicest towing vehicle I had ever driven with the addition of the WDH. This Nissan is eaten up with power but it is just not as smooth without the long wheelbase of the DC Tundra.

Had an 08 CrewMax Limited for 3 days before returning it. Hated that truck. Engine/tranny were kick ass. Frame, dash, box, tailgate and seating position suck donkey dicks. Often wish I kept it just for the power, but I really like my 06.

The 5 ton has a muffler. And the big cummins 855 only revs to 2150 rpm anyways.
But on long trips, YES, hearing protection is a must. Not as bad as the multi-fuels are though.

it gets better mileage with the dpf deleted I noticed a good 5+ mpg gain I also noticed less turbo lag when taking off that hesitation is gone. I haven't had any issues with coolant.
I lucked out this truck cast a little more than i wanted to pay but caught it at the end of 08 and they just kinda wanted it gone they knock 12grand off the sticker.

Yeah I should have picked one of them up when they were 37 grand for a CC/SB 6.4 Lariat 4x4 but like a ding dong i didn't. Now the're in the 40's again. 37K is a lot of cash for me (most people for that matter).

This is an older pic but my 02 Xterra and my ranger. Parked on the hill right there it looks terrible but it tows just fine down the highway at 60-70mph keeping up with drivecampers and my buddies CTD and there rigs. The only real complaints I have with it are the short wheelbase makes it insanely important to get the truck centered on the trailer right and my trailer is to heavy. When I can afford an aluminum one Il be picking it up.
