: BFG Krawler??
Weasel 06-30-2002, 09:39 PM From the best rock tire thread.....someone metioned the new BFG Kralwers look to be a good tire. Are these out yet?? I havn't seen much on them. Anyone know a release date when they do plan on having these out? Any extra info would be cool.
Wilson 06-30-2002, 10:11 PM Not available to the general public yet and from what I saw at the Moon Rocks event, they are not that great, I'll stick with my MTR's
Weasel 06-30-2002, 10:16 PM Cool...I just remebered the search button  and found some more info. The guys that are running them seem to love them.

Yeah, they suck. The winner at Moon Rocks was running them, but they suck. ;)

What good are tires when you carry the fawking rig through the courses? :flipoff2:
Sundowner 07-01-2002, 04:00 AM I saw a bronco with a set of the new Krawlers absloutley shrug off the rock garden at OK4wd. while I'm certain those tries ended up on that truck on purpose, the tires looked like they did well.
did BFG settle on a tread design or are they still grooving them by hand?
81hilux 07-01-2002, 06:45 AM surprises me they are not going to be made in a 37 x 12.50 15 configuration like the mtrs...
Sundowner 07-01-2002, 07:18 AM the ones I saw *were* 37"
LOKNLOD 07-01-2002, 07:51 AM Newest Fourwheeler has a pic and blurb about them, says they're gonna come out in a 37-12.50-17 first and then a 35-12.50-15. Hopefully they end up in a variety of sizes (at least a 37 for 15" rims).
Weasel 07-01-2002, 07:53 AM From what I have read they are going to make a 37" tire but only with a 17" rim. The MTR's are offered in the same config. and not with a 15" rim. Only the MT claws have a 37x..x15. That could be wrong though.
Weasel 07-01-2002, 08:31 AM I am looking to buy tires in the next 2 months in a 31" and would try the Krawlers but doesn't look like they will be out that soon.
road1will 07-01-2002, 08:34 AM weasel, there is an MTR in 37x12.50R15. they are pretty cheap too for that size of tire in that tread, i think like $160ea?
check around online.
MattS 07-01-2002, 08:56 AM There were 2 sets that I know of at the Pro Rocks in OK. I felt the tread and they were very soft. They looked like they had plenty of traction. Here's a few pics if them.

Go2Guy 07-01-2002, 09:20 AM The sidewalls on theses puppies are tough! 4 ply nylon, ran them 4 weekends at Disney OK and that place will slice open super swampers. I'm still getting used to the slightly narrower track and 30 lbs less per corner (had 38.5 TSL's on wide steel beadlocks). They seem to hook in the rock (At least at disney) as well as my swampers, I do miss my wide tires and wheels which gave me more line chices. I've heard that the 3000 lb and less rigs don't like the stiffer sidewalls that the Krawlers have. I have no idea when they will be available.
Sundowner 07-01-2002, 09:50 AM the ones I saw were not cut like that. the outer lugs were the same, but the center lugs followed a sinuous line around the circumference of the tire.
Grendel 07-01-2002, 11:59 AM I thought these were the tires that came "configurable"? Like they sent them with allot of tread and you cut them to the block pattern you wanted?
Go2Guy 07-01-2002, 12:06 PM I'm pretty sure BFG is doing most of the cutting- there seem to be two or three main patterns- the ones with more of a continuous center feature are an effort to reduce push on the front tires. I dont find a lot of push on the more popular GI Joe pattern shown on the pics Matt posted (The checkered rig is mine). I did grove the center blocks a little to help though.
Most everyone is siping them under the " It can't hurt" philosophy.

I think Shupes buggy is about 2600 and he loves them. Says they're the stickiest he's ran before. That tread is ungodly soft too. I stuck my finger into them and it about got swallowed (little exaggeration)
TNToy 07-01-2002, 12:16 PM I got the impression from the guys at TOR that they weren't going to come "configureable". This feature is not mentioned in any press realease you've read about them, right? ;)
It always seemed to me that BFG was simply letting the wheelers experiment with them to help their guys decide on the final tread pattern. While most of us would eat it up, the less-hardcore bolt-on guys would be turned off by a tire that had to be cut up to put on their vehicles. And like it or not, that group buys more tires than the hardcore ones ever will, simply because there's so many more of them.
MT/Rs are a good example: Sure, quite a few hardcore crawlers run them... but I can't imagine I live in the only part of the country where the too-clean jeeps with the immaculate, untested rocker skids are all running the damn things.

Shupe told me his rig weighed 3400. Either way, he did kick ass with them. They seem EXTREMELY sticky and soft. We were talking to him at the motel about them and he said that, as of right now, the tread pattern that he has seems to be the one that BFG is going to bring to production. He wishes they made 39.5" versions of them. He said that BFG told him that, if he could round up enough folks to buy 5000 tires, they would make a run of them. :D Any takers?

MattS 07-01-2002, 12:47 PM I have to disagree. After feeling the tread on them there is no way they would last on anything but a wheeler if the production tires have the same compound as the ones I saw. G02Guy, how do yours look after the comp? I looked at the ones on the other buggy and they were pretty tore up for only 2 days use. (assuming they were new) I think these will be more like Boggers than MT/R's when it comes to street trucks usage. You understand your buying a DOT legal competition tire and don't expect it to last.

Go2Guy 07-01-2002, 12:56 PM Allthough no one has said this to me, I won't be surprised if the production pieces have a more normal compound. I think what people have been saying is correct, they have played with a few different patterns in order to decide on a single production pattern. These things may have a volume market for Hummers- don't the new ones run on 17's?
with that said, I know there are at least two compounds out there- mine are not the stickiest though I intend to get a set of the stickier ones. The ones I have check close to 60 with a durometer, barely softer than my TSL's. I don't recall the exact numbers, just that they were close.
My tire's are rashed, but any tire looks that way after playing hard in Disney, my SX's, Boggers and TSL's all had the same look to them after a trip to Disney.

That's what I was about to say. Hamilton told me that wheeling there was like wheeling on jagged poured concrete as far as the roughness factor.
On that 5000 tire deal to get 39.5s....
I'm sure it was a little bit BS but apparently a BFG rep mentioned that to a wealthy individual (whose name I've forgotten) and the guy just said "Who do I make the check out to?" fully willing to purchase them all. Let's see 5000 tire @ say $250/tire, only 1.25 million. Definitely a good story to hear though even if it wasn't true :D

You're right, must have been the tires and nothing to do with rig/driver and spotter ability or experience. I think 2 or 3 rigs there were running them and they didn't seem to grip as well as the MTR's were, but that could have been just on that type of rock or something else. I don't remember if they were all running the same tread pattern.

Tan Wheeler No Mo 07-01-2002, 05:39 PM I think BFG is just paying the right people to run the tires.
No I mean MICHILEN.
Jeepmangled87 07-01-2002, 07:06 PM you got to love free tires.:D
AxlesUp 07-01-2002, 09:25 PM if they price them like the baja ta im sure i'll never see a set other than at comp... hell ive never seen a baja ta in person for that matter..
ill take one of the free sets even with the rash . :D
peace

pitter 07-01-2002, 09:38 PM why does BFG make their 37/12.5/r17, does anyone run 17" rims, why wouldn't they make some for a 15" rim:rolleyes:
Jayrockn7 07-01-2002, 09:48 PM At Jellico the terrain has a lot of loose dirt and rock ledges. In the loose dirt the BFG's hooked up MUCH BETTER then the MTR's, on the rocks I've heard they start to slide like boggers do when they get packed with mud. At the SFWDA Summer Convention at Windrock this year BFG was testing a lot of different 37" tires; Krawlers, Mud T/A km's, MTR's, and TSL BOGGERS. The people testing them had a lot to say about each, but basically the Krawler is a combo of the other 3 put together with all the good and bad points from each tire. From what I've seen Ken Shupe do with them, these tires rock! but that's on dry terrain and not just rocks. If you like the digging power of a bogger and the climbing ability of MTR's on dry rock surfaces then this is the tire for you, but if you don't like how the MTR's suck in mud, or how the boggers slide all over the place, then look else where. \
THERE REALLY IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR A TRUE TSL SUPER SWAMPER:flipoff2:
Moab Austin 07-01-2002, 09:59 PM if they make a 40x14 or close sign me up !!!
I would buy a set if they were 250 or less...
BTW how would one get a set of used ones? anyone?
