if this is going to turn into a sell your jeep thread (which it obviously is) my 89 comanche is for sale, 2300 obo details at http://www.autocolorado.com/forsale/

but to answer teh question.....89 was the first year the ax15 appeared for a manual, 87 was the first year for the 4.0, 91 was the first year for an open cooling system and the HO engine, 96 was teh best model year for the old body styles (go figure...)

so it is basically weigh your options and get the most bang for the buck

Overall, the best year for the XJ was '95. Best engine, simple, least amount of problems. Forget the '84-86. '87-90 had the Renix injection system. While not bad, was more complicated. The'91-95 MPI Mopar was superior. I had all these versions of engine one way or another, and now run a bored 4.2 with a 4.0L H.O. head and MPI, with a lot of other internal upgrades (cam shaft, timing gears, adjustable pressure regulator).
Find a low mileage '94-95.
Sorry, nothing to sell.
Well, actually, I've got a bunch of truck transmissions.
regards, as always, jefe

Jefe's got it right......

One other big difference to consider: 95+ XJs without ABS got the bigger vacuum booster and master cylinder setup.

OTOH, 95 also got an airbag steering wheel.

I'm fitting a 95 vacuum booster and M/C on my 94 this week. Best of both worlds.
