I,ve got a chevy 350 with an sm-420 and 3-speed t-case in my fj-40 and im wondering how far back i should put the motor? To keep it from over heating. Does anyone have this same set up that can show me or tell me what thay did exactly in inches from the shock tower. thanks

My setup has an electric fan, so I am not much help in inches from the shock tower, but you want the engine as far FORWARD as possible, not as far back....
It is the heat generated by the engine against the firewall that tends to get people in trouble.

I positioned mine so that the shifter on the 420 clears the heater
(barely), and the valve cover clears the firewall, and heater hoses.

I have been seeing this theory of the engine sitting against the firewall causing heat issues since I got on the LCML way back when, and since I built several Cruisers prior to knowing this mine are all sitting just so the heater hoses will clear. I had rather deal with lots of room at the front of the engine.
Just have a decent radiator, clutch fan and shroud.
I would never hook a SBC up to the 3 spd myself, too light a tranny.

I have to agree with Tex, that 3spd is tiny! Guess that it just shows how much overkill the SM420 is!!
