: no fuel out of the filter inlet.

I have an 89 wrangler with the 4.2 motor. The motor wasn't ran for about a year. I recently replaced the dead battery and it started without a problem. Since I don't drive the vehicle anymore, I've just been running the motor every other day so the battery stays charged. But then it stopped firing up. I looked down the throat of the carburator and turned the throttle and i don't see the two streams of fuel. I've replaced the fuel filter and still doesn't run. When I had the lines to the fuel filter disconnected, I cranked the motor to check if fuel was getting to the filter and no fuel came out. It was also strange that when i disconnected the lines to the fuel filter orginally, no gas spilled out. So I just finished replacing the mechanical fuel pump and have cranked the motor several times: the longest was about a continuous 10 second crank. still no fuel to the carb. btw, no fuel spilled out of the fuel pump lines when i disconnected them.

ok enough of that...bottom line is that fuel isn't reaching the pump. could it be that the pickup inside the gas tank is clogged? how common is that problem?. I'd like to get out of dropping the fuel tank to replace the pickup.

a cracked line or hole will allow it to suck air, It does have enough gas in the tank right? It may not be able to draw it,

a plugged vent can cause problems, I doubt that is your case.

yes it has enough gas. I'l try to trace and inspect the fuel lines tomorrow to see if i spot anything cracked or punctured.

See if you can blow air back to the tank from where it connects to the pump. You may have to dump a bit of gas down the carb so it will run long enough to get the pump primed.

got it fixed!...it was an air leak at the rubber hoses connected to the fuel filter. But before I replaced the hoses, I did what crashnzuk suggested of putting a lot of gas in the carb to get it running. It primed the pump and started running. But I almost had a disaster. As I was warming it up I stepped out of the jeep to look at the motor and a stream of gas was shooting out of the fuel filter. It must've been streaming out for a good 2 minutes. Fuel was all over the exhaust and intake manifolds. Shut it off and ran to the garage to grab the fire extinguisher just in case flames ignite. Hey, but I found the air leak...
