: Weekend Update
Cliffy [JD] 07-01-2002, 07:41 AM I'm stoked I actually have something to contribute this time.
I got my starting problem fixed permantely with the Ford Solenoid.
I also bled my brakes so I can cruise now. But I still need to either replace my prop. valve and tinker with the brakes or take it to a brake shop and have 'em checked out. (I have to stand on them to stop quickly)
I also got my rear tailights hooked up and I was happy to see that my tail light and brakes light wiring were in good shape and worked well.
Let's see I also removed blocks from the front and leveled the vehicle out. Now when I sit in it, the door handles both sit at a height of 45.5" EXACTLY!!! so that's cool.
On the downside I was able to "run" the vehicle for the first time in quite awhile and was not impressed with the power. Which I'm sure is due in part to my large tires with only 4.10:1's but I think most of the problem is just a plain wore out 345. Hopefully The caddy engine will start coming along:( Until then I don't know how much wheelin this engine will get me through. I was able to climb a fairly steep dirt hill in 2wd so it's not ALL bad.
Anyway I'm really stoked about the progress I made this weekend and Hope you all had a good one too!
SSGTWC 07-01-2002, 07:55 AM I ddn't get much done for one, it's just been to damn hot, and two, I don't have the right size of contact tips for my welder.
I'm almost done with the floors, and just about ready to move on to the bed area. That's another serious rust issue. This week I'll get the caliper brackets I got from A&A, grinded out to fit the rear axle, and start painting it. Plus start painting the front axle also. Then I need to contact the machine shops here in town and see if they will take care of my flat-tops. Then hopefully I can get the front 44 put back together and back underneath the frame. I hope anyway.

If it makes you feel any better, with 36s on my Scout, I have to stand on it to make it stop.. but then you have the 3/4T brakes..
Might be a m/c bore issue.
Find out what size bore the original Chevy (assuming it stopped alright) m/c was (or get that m/c) and find one to match it.
You may need to apply more foot pressure because of an imbalance between the m/c and calipers.

Again, if it makes you feel any better, my Scout isn't as zippy with 4.09s and 36s as it was with 33s. Highway acceleration just requires use of 3rd a little longer before I grab 4th.
On the trail it's not much of a problem in low range with the wide T19. Power is there.
Might start looking at timing the 345.. maybe somewhere around 10 BTDC for starters.. and see if you can wake it up.
Hooper also found that a crushed and mangled exhaust was choking off his rebuilt 345. :D
tsm1mt 07-01-2002, 08:07 AM Well, as I already posted.. I cruised the junkyards on Saturday, then pulled the front clip from my 1/2T on Sunday..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/6_30_2002/smDCP_0006.JPG
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/shopcam/shop.jpg
hoping the removal from my Travelette goes as easily, and even more so that re-installation goes this easy.. could have it all operational again by the 4th (it's "birthday" of sorts..)
RustoleumWhite 07-01-2002, 08:08 AM Why to go Cliffy.... some day you might actually WHEEL that thing :D :flipoff2:
Saturday was NICE AND SUNNY for a change.... so I went to the pull-a-part... and SCORED!!!
First yard: what do I find, the exact thing I came looking for, fresh arrival (was at the end of the row) burnt out late f-150 4x4, with good front rotors.... needless to say I snaged those right away...
Looked around, found a RCD44 (drum) from another new-arivel that I was very tempted to pull, but will come back with heavier equipment :D (and help)
Then rolled down to the other pick-n-pull, and scored a set of WARN premuium hubs, another set of flat-topped knuckles, and a couple Corp-14 short sides (:D :D for a "future project" :D)
My go back later this week and snag a whole 14-bolt as well... oh Hooper.... :flipoff2:
All told, $75!! sweet
no if I can just figure out this spindle thing:mad3: :mad3:
Cliffy [JD] 07-01-2002, 08:16 AM Oh I almost forgot. I got my shocks mounted too. ALL FOUR!!
Then I painted them black to blend with the rest of the underside (black was as close as I had to RUST & GRIME!!) so no passerbys would be tempted to take a peek and snag them, like they did with my 9000's :(
PS. I'm realy happy with the rebound and compression rate of the ProComp 1000's I picked up from parts mike.
jdjanda 07-01-2002, 08:35 AM Nothing too exciting, bent the rear, middle and front hoops for the cage, pulled the top and test fit everything. I have the middle and rear hoops in place with stringers. This week I hope to have the cage completly fitted and ready for final welding (Hint Mark, Hint).:p
Joe
TERRA-IZER 07-01-2002, 08:47 AM Nothing done to mine this weekend, but did get all the body work done on another guys 1980 Diesel Scout 2 (outer rockers, lower 1/4's) and got it in Primer surfacer last night so it should be painted by the end of the week than i can work on mine and get it ready for the RMIHR. Cliffhanger my scout stops pretty good with the 37's (not as good as my 1980 diesel with 31's). And i doid notice a little bit of power loss when i went from 36's to the 37's but not much, it will still break the bake tire lose.
ol John Henry 07-01-2002, 08:55 AM Friday- took off work and hit "All truck nationals" at Carlisle, PA:D  :D
picked up some 42's and cutout flares:D :p :D
Saturday mounted the 42's and got one flare on:flipoff2: :usa: :flipoff2:
Sunday got another flare on and welded in front shock mounts:D  :D
The flares (Chevy) take up the entire fender from the door all the way into the nose piece (allotta sawzall action)
:D :sawzall: :D
Scout Dude 07-01-2002, 08:58 AM Well, I had my Scout ready (well, as ready as it gets:p ) to go wheeling on Sat. We were planning on leaving at 4:30 am:eek: in order to meet the clean up crew on the Con at 7:00 am. So, at 1:30, I decide to finally drive this thing fast enough to see if there is any death wobble that every other D60 owner seems to have...Drive down the street at about 30mph...runs great...it's a little loud with only 3 feet of straight pipe though:D ...cut accross a parking lot to the nearest gas station and hit a speed bump at speed (It is a SPEED bump right?:D )..and Wham (Big loud bang! )...so, I pull into the gas station start filling up and then look to see WTF broke. Well, it seems that my Front shackles were either too short, or the springs settled rather quickly and the Shackle mount was too far forward...so, like a dumbass, I inverted a shackle...went home, parked it and then went to bed for 2 friggin hours:mad:
Then, went up with Matt (Rockslut)..wheled his rig all weekend...he needs to change his screen name to "Point & Shoot"...that YJ is ridiculous.
Todd (Monkey Boy) took his near stock XJ through the Soup bowl and nearly made it even though he was completly open in both axles..1 Small tug near the top and he made it...
Nothing really exciting this weekend...:D
Oh, yeah..we helped block the by-passes too:flipoff2:

Got PICS? (E-mail me with them if you do and I'll post them)
YellowIH 07-01-2002, 09:38 AM I mounted the 37" MT/R's....backspacing is important....needs to be at least 3.5 Inches....4.25" looks really good...fyi!! Guess I will be sending some money to Summit for new wheels.
Mounted a 14 x 3 offset aircleaner...motor runs a little better since it can breathe....idles lower.
Saturday morning I cut up a 78 terra for parts....selling the axles to a Jeeper Tuesday night....now I have another motor/ 727 tranny and D20 to play with as need be....body was all cancered out and going to the crusher.
Double nutted all the shock bolts to see if they will stay attached to Scout........
:D
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
RustoleumWhite 07-01-2002, 09:47 AM wered you get the off-set air cleaner???
Got a PN, Pic??
I really want to get rid of thise little 10" unit I've always been running....
YellowIH 07-01-2002, 10:10 AM I run a two inch body lift...a carb adapter....a quad and the 14 x 3 "offest for HEI" air cleaner....it clears everything!!
Got it from Summit....PN SUM-239432....the filter is a K&N knockoff....might be able to run a 4" element.
Oh yeah...its on a 1973 IH SII with new body mounts and a 345.

thanks
Hooper 07-01-2002, 11:21 AM A week or so ago, I put a new bushing in the front driver spring, and put my extended shackles back on to try out. Had to drive the rig abou 45 minutes friday evening. Rear driveline vibration, and steering like I was on ice. Didn't like it all all. So, I yanked the extended shackles and put my stock length ones back on. Much nicer.
Also, clamped down my driver side outboard exhaust, at a certain speed, it would set up a harmonic and start rattling against the floorboards. Very annoying. So, I secured it away from the floorboards. No more of that nonsense.
Can't decide if I want to pull the pipe from the backside of the passenger exhaust. I know it is somewhat restrictive. the pipe slides into a 2 1/4" i.d. pipe. So, I may just yank that and let the exhaust end with the mufflers. The driver side vents into the front of the wheelwell, but the passenger side would vent under the step. Idon't have any holes in my bed floor, and run topless all the time (bikini only) but I am a little concerned about fumes. Guess I will try it and see. Engine will probably balance a little better with both exhausts ending at the mufflers.
Oh, almost forgot, when I put my t-case in this last time, I cut the ears off, like Tom did. It did make it easier to put in, and now I have room to run a full diameter pipe through that section, if I ever decide to replace the front portion of my exhaust.
So, didn't do much. Been figuring out a rear gas tank skid plate to go over my 33 gallon tank, but haven't gotten it all straight in my head yet. I think I want to use diamond plate, to save on weight, and for (heaven forbid) asthetics, but the jury is still out. It will probably largely depend on what kind of junk I can find up at the steel surplus yard....
ChiScouter 07-01-2002, 11:31 AM Was on my back on a creeper all day Sat, spraying on the degreaser as recomended by Old Scout, and scrubbing off all the grime with a brush you would clean vegtables with. Like a giant fawkin toothbrush. Went all the way from the gas tank forward and up the firewall. Temp was around 95 degrees with 90 percent humidity. Wore a swim cap and goggles to keep the shit off of me. Was covered with spots of oil and grease everywhere. Every time I came out from under the Scout and someone drove by they looked at me like I was a maniac. Probably looked like one.
Pulled the seats and center console to get rid of all protruding bolts in prep to paint the underside. I thought the underside was painted black, but was grease oil and grime. Turns out it was never painted and is the natural yellow color of fiberglass you would see in inner parts of a boat. That shit from Old Scout works great, only real tough spots are above the U joints and slip yoke where grease has been flung throughout the years. Hosed out my frame rails, and got about 10 pounds of rust out, still more in there.
If lucky by the weekend will have the fiberglass repaired around the drivers side body mount and the fancy paint applied underbody. Also hope to cut off the old engine mounts, parking brake cable brackets, and exhaust hangers.
Rubicrawler 07-01-2002, 11:34 AM No work on the rigs but went to the 'Con and worked our a$$es off! Had a great time but I'm a little sore today (fell outa my EB:()
Yeah Joe- I got the hint :flipoff2: Let's do it!
Harvester of Sorrow 07-01-2002, 11:35 AM I actually started the teardown of my new front axle assembly. Everything looks pretty kosh:
Good ball joints, gears and pinion are clean, and the discs still have some meat on them.
My bent front axle is another story though. The long tube is so taco'd that I can not get the shaft and knuckle through the opening. I will have to remove the arm first.
Did lots of clean up on the new axle housing and such, and broke out the FLAT BLACK!
Still have to make my new beefy shackles and remove my front sway brace bullshit...clean the shit out of everything and then put it back together.
Anybody needing outers or inners from a Dana 44 front:question:

The Rockslut 07-01-2002, 11:46 AM Scout Dude's virgin run in the box. He was fully getting it in the YJ.
Scoutillac 07-01-2002, 12:12 PM Friday...put the ctm's in my warn shafts, what a fawkin pain in the ass. Pulled the long side and swaped in the new shaft assy:D Pulled the short side and noticed I had two fawked ball joints, so I said fawk it and went to bed.
Saturday....Picked up a terra low kit, tore down my d-20 and started grinding, got it clearenced, started to assemble it when the cage on one of the front output shaft bearings fell off:mad: Grabed my spare case and pirated the front out put from that, luckily the bearings were fine, put some stuff in, took some stuff out...by then it was 1 am so I went to bed.
Sunday..finished the case, rechecked clearence, fawk, they failed to mention one spot that needed some shaving:mad: Took it back apart, ground the fawk out of the case so I could get it into 2 hi, reassembled it and moved on to the ball joints. The lower joint was really pissed from being beat to fawk by axles that went:nuke: Finaly got the nut off, beat out the joints, beat the new ones in. I'll reassemble that side this evening, plumb my fuel return line and tie up some loose wires. Tomorow I will put in my new D-20 twin stick with the 3:15 kit and make any mods to the floor that are required:D If I'm real lucky I'll get to wheel it this coming weekend:rasta:
Monkeyboy 07-01-2002, 01:09 PM HMMMMM
Where should I start.
Arrived at the spillway at 8:00 PM Friday evening.
Steve and I went and played on the gate keeper in my XJ
Got stuck. tried to take the left line. Big rock took a bite out of my rocker. Got Unstuck then went back to camp.
Invited some FOTR dude with a Unimog Radio truck back to our camp for dinner and beer. Dropped his ass back off at his campsite then went back and went to sleep.
Supposed top meet every one and drive in to Ellis. drove in with a red Cj and then picked up the Unimog guy on the way in.
I HATE THAT GUY WITH THE UNIMOG.
Ever try to spot for a guy that don't know how to drive and don't want to scratch his rig.
Steve and I suffered through it for 2 fawking hours we get this guy through then he gives up and decides not to go all the way to Ellis.
We stackedenough rocks for this Fawking Unimog that you could get a stock Jeep liberty through the trail. And this guy still had a hard time driving the Unimog through:mad:
Well after we got rid of that Guy. Steve and I hauled ass to Ellis
I tagged a rock or stump and managed to bend my rim started loosing Air fast.
handed Steve the hammer and I grabbed the air and we were on our way again.
Pulled into Ellis shortly after with an average speed of about 10 - 15 MPH :D
Met Dell albright and the rest of the crew at Ellis then Took off to meet my Work crew to start repairing the area at the bottom of Walker Hill. Fixed that then went to play :Dhttp://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=668006
drew lines for passanger side half door. hacked the sheet out of it with a wizzer disk. cut 1" box tubing to frame out the extra floppy half door. hung door and adjusted hinges... to be finished this weekend.

PICS!!
I myself didn't get too much exciting done. Replaced the crappy Bosch plugs with autolite 85's (wow, what a difference) other tune-up items (cap/rotor/wires/etc) and degreased the sheet out of the drivetrain. My grey concrete driveway is now as black as pavement. And the undercarriage is still kinda grimey. I wonder if taking an inch thick layer of crap off the front axle will improve my gas mileage? ;) At least I can work underneath it now without getting hit by chunks of crud and coming out looking like I just climbed out of the La Brea tarpits.

What you are saying is that the yard is "up there" as in north of us huh? Anything else that you might want to indulge upon me?
I got about 50 % of my u-joints out of my shafts...I fucking hate not having all of my tools and things in this townhouse!! It is seemingly taking me longer to do this axle job than it would have in my mothers gravel driveway!
Of course then I did not have two little boys running around grabbing my airtools and hoses going "COOOOOOLLL".
Plus the oldest one, who is 4-1/2 just caught about 2-1/2 feet of air off a jump and scraped his face on the asphalt! Looks like my evening is going to be left to the house!

or maybe both of you, Corp 14's is HEAVY!!
TxScout 07-01-2002, 08:42 PM This weekend sucked for me. Made to the junk yard on Sat before the rains (monsoons) came. They didn't have squat, but a crappy travellete with a bad front clip.
Sunday wasn't any better. My parents came up to help me look at homes I'm considering buying. First "community" we went we checked on some homes mid-construction. I could shake the whole frame my moving a couple of studs. They all had stupid finger joints and no cross support. Plus all the beams were 2x4's with a million trusses going up to the roof which was also 2x4 beams. I got annoyed when the builder was unwilling to compramise on the construction of the frame, said no thanks to them. Then the rains came back and the rest of the day was ruined.
Anyone wanna sell thier old sky sagger lifts they don't want anymore? e-mail me...

keep the pics comming.

I looked at that website and the chicks website/pics as well but nothing up close of Abba....but what I did see was a sweet rig.
When you use the cut out flares do they extend in far enough to cover the material you remove? I am looking to cut the body without having to do any welding and body work... I have never paid attention to the cutout flares in person and the Bushwacker website sucks...
Guess I just need to keep my eyes open.
