: Tire Size vs Wheel Base

I have searched a few times in a few places and cannot find a calculator or even a real indication of what is optimal as everyone seems to just go for between 100 and 112ish and veried tire sizes from 35" and up. I recall seeing some one post something on here but I cannot find it. Is it as simple as choose what you want. The reason I ask is we have a clown that wants to run an 83" WB with 36-38" tires and I cannot wait to watch it roll down hills.

I always felt the bigger the tire the longer the wheelbase. At least to feel comfortable climbing and decending steep stuff. 83" with 38"s would be really scary especially depending how wide the track width is?? I almost rolled my sami over backwards stock more than once with 29"s LOL

I hear you and I explained that to him, he responded with well the CJ 5 is about that and after I stopped laughing I reminded him how often they fell over backwards going up hill. I guess it is really what terrain you run that makes the choice, but I cannot understand the logic of such a short WB. He is most likely going with some Jeep axles he has, but he has some Scout ones there as well, Dana 44's but the thinner ones. This project is a CJ 2 BTW!

i had ~83" wb with 35's, and it was decent, but now i'm at 101" with 39.5's and it feels much better on climbs. i expect 38's with 83" wb is gonna suck unless it sits really low. -marty

Here was mine at 84" wb and 35" MTR's:

#1 4+ downhill at Hot Springs, Ark. and it was like this all the way down:eek:
#2 Uphill at Kansas Rocks
#3 Wife climbing out in the summer
#4 Wife climbing out in the winter
#5 Removing the 2 grandsons

Even at 36's and a 94" wb I'd over do it. This was a 6 rated trail at Wheelin' Ranch in Nacona, Tx. Notice I give the wife a chioce and here she is watching me get out.:shaking:

Maybe he suffers from dyslexia and is confusing 83 and 38" Why not run 44's maybe the tires would rub each other and stop him from being able to drive forward. Seriously get the guy a cage and let him roll. Live and learn you can't get stupid out of people any other way.

Here's the wife after she got out on our first roll over backwards. Notice this was before a roll cage. My wife said " you ARE going to put a roll cage in the rebuild". I said YES. This was the last thing to add, like most people do and should be the first on the list. The reason it's now white and has seen several white bodies.

FYI - I don't think 115" w/b would have helped on this one. Maybe less skinny?

Stock sami wheelbase and 34's sucked then I went to the 36 iroks. That lasted one trip, I was rolling and flopping on the stupidest shit ever, now my rig is torn down in the shop linked and sitting at 104". Short wheelbase+large tires+steep terrain = the suck. Make him put a cage in that high center of gravity heep.

I had 35s on a 81.5" wb. It was ok. It was way better with the 87" wb. Funny thing is that I never flopped or rolled with the 35s, only when it had stock axles on 33s:confused:
