Me and a bunch of guys are about to take on Ershim trail and I would like to know if anyone has some 'wheeling' pics of the trail. I searched the net and of what little pictures I can find, almost all of them are of the lakes and trees, everything except wheeling pictures.

Does anyone have some good action shot from Ershim trail? The more hardcore the better. I want to know what I can expect to find in the way of wheelin..

Sorry, no pics at work, but if you've done the 'Con, you know
what the Dusy's like. Very close as far as level of difficulty, it's
just that the Dusy is 3 times as long. There are longer areas
on the Dusy where you can just cruise and relax. Both times
I've done it in 2 1/2 days. I'll be up there sometime in Aug.

The only tough parts are Thompson Hill near the beginning from the South, and near the Kaiser Pass exit at the North. You will need a least one locker to get over Thompson, depending on the trail condition. If a bunch of fools have been over the trail of recent, they tend to tear it up maiking passage more difficult. It is a long trail, something like 27 miles, usually taking parts of 3 days for me to negotiate. [take some spare gas if you have a V8] This can be done in two long days but you are just beat to death at a fast pace. It has less solid rock than the Rubicon and more rocks the size of cantelopes. There are only a few smooth places where you can just 'cruise'. It's a very scenic trail and gets up to 9900 feet with incredible views of the Sierra. There is also a special fishing spot up there about half way through the trail. Very special.
regards, as always, jefe

The Dusy is not a hardcore trail - don't go there thinking you'll get extreme. Go for the scenery, the lakes, the fishing and the quiet.

Keep your rig on the designated trail!!!!!!!!! :mad3:

I have a bunch of pics posted here: http://www.jeepshots.com/shots/trails/dusy%20july%201-4,%2001/

Nice pics Paul, looks like a nice trail with gorgeous scenery. How long did it take you to get down there from San Fagfrisco?

Looks like it's just outside Fresno. Long damn trip behind the wheel of a Heep. I think I'll wait until I gets tow rig.

hello...
the dusy/ershim trail is 33 miles long..(most rigs may need extra gas)
most people run it from the south(courtright) to the north(kaiser pass)....
about the most difficult spots are always thompson hill on the south side and boulder alley on the north side....
there are quite a few lakes, some that you can hike to such as mallard lk. and some you pass on the trail such as ershim lk. and lake camp(both of these usually have good fishin)...
to enjoy yourself on this trail it is best to give yourself 3 days to run the trail so its enjoyable...
you can run it in less time but by the end of the trail most people are so burnt out that they are just grindin over rocks with out a care by the end of the trail....
the weather has been nice warm days and cold nights(be sure to get a campfire permit at the ranger station on the way up, they are required and free and please make sure your fire is out when you leave..)
the bugs are out so bring insect repellant.....
its a very scenic trail that is in a corridor through the wilderness worth wheelin but be sure to stay on the trail because this trail as many others are in california are always under fire....
and btw im the ohv patrol ranger that runs dusy, swamp, and bald mtn, and does trail maintance, trail monitoring, and law enforcement so that the trails stays open for everyone....
have a fun time wheelin...and see you on the trails....

We just got back from Ershim trail Sunday so I guess I no longer need the pictures. I can post some of the pictures I took someti me later this week.

I managed to break a rear axle while on the trail, other than that the trail was awsome... :D

Yup... Correct... Right at the base where the boulders start getting large... Was my own fault.. 35s will not climb 2" flat face rocks... Should have layed off the gas... BUT NOOOOOO <SNAP> Oh well.. it only took 2 hours to take the entire axle assembly apart to remove the wedged axle stub from the locker.. :mad3:

I think I was standing there when you broke it. I was driving the yellow cj pulling the trailer. :)

Everything I have read says you have to have a locker to make it what is the minimum? Will a powerlock cut it? I also hear there is alot of decomposed grannit.

I have a 60 cj5 w/ 289, t98, t18 w/ tera low, 44 rear & 27 front w/ powerlocks, 4.27 gears & a 10k lb winch.

What kind of trouble should I expect?

You will be fine. Last weekend we had 2 cj5's running with us that had Powerlocks and they walked everything.

I ran it with a guy that had stock axles (d30/AMC20) & open diffs w/ 33's. He did'nt have too much trouble.
