: Axle U-Joints...how bigga hammer?
Harvester of Sorrow 07-01-2002, 01:08 PM Well...
I just got off of the phone with the local machine shop and they want 50 bucks to press out the old joints in my inner and outer axle assemblies.
My little old 16oz framing hammer just is not cutting the mustard and 50 bucks will buy a lot of  .....
Taking suggestions? I am going to borrow a 2 or 3 pound dead blow from work tonight.
Should I try to torch the ring ends of the axles?
I have never had this much of an issue before!!
Scout Dude 07-01-2002, 01:19 PM I use a 12" c-clamp and place a ~1.75" socket over the end that the cap needs to come out of. My Axles were rusted beyond recoginition and this still worked!
Oh, yeah..IMO, I wouldn't hammer them at all...the ears will bend!
The Rockslut 07-01-2002, 01:23 PM If you hammer them correctly the ears will be fine. A 2-3lb hammer should be more than neccessary IF you remover the C-clips first.
Harvester of Sorrow 07-01-2002, 01:27 PM Yeah...I remembered the clips.
I have a press here at work that I tried to use...big fucker. Anyway I got one of them to start to move then it just blew the top of the cap off!!! I thought fuck that I do not want to be picking shrapnel out of my ass. Guess that I do not have the right adapting pieces to chock up a holder.
The C-clamp idea sounds good...
Weezer 07-01-2002, 01:34 PM I used a press once and ended up doing the same thing, blew the tops off the caps and bent the ears on the yoke. I never got those shafts to work rite again:mad: Ive been told that if you do use a press make sure to tap on the yoke with a hammer while youre pressing.
Rerard 07-01-2002, 01:34 PM Use a screwdriver and hammer to get the clips out... then but the u-joint on top of a big socket (so it can come out into the socket) and put something on top of it like a small socket or whatever and start pounding, I did this just last week, used a 2.5 lb sledge -- it took a while.
welndmn 07-01-2002, 01:38 PM "barrow a hammer"
more like GO BUY your own hammer.
Look in the tech section of this site (its more then just a BBS)
Lance has some good little tricks to getting them out
Brandon 07-01-2002, 01:38 PM cheap arbor press will do the trick, I did bend my ears when I tried the hammer method - I would use some sort or press, got a vice?
Nobody 07-01-2002, 01:41 PM I think you're hitting it wrong. I used to use sockets and fumble around with all that crap until snortclown showed me a really simple way.
Place the axle in the vise so it is resting on the ears of the stub shaft. Don't tighten the vise down. Then hammer as shown below. Fip it over and do the other side. Then the stub shaft will be free. Then you rest the ends of the u-joint on the vise and hammer in the same spot on the stub shaft. Even the most stubborn cap will pop right out. This obviously won't work with broken u-joints.

Why didn't you share this technique years ago? I feel dumb for not thinking of it.

Bingo
clc900 07-01-2002, 07:30 PM Harvester of Sorrow............Language of the Mad, oh yeah. The way mentioned above is a great way to do it. However it is kind of hard to find a vise on the side of the trail. Although i have seen it before. I would do at least one the ol manual way of using a big mutha hamma and a socket or even a big mutha clamp and a socket. Make sure you take out the clips first!
..................let the beatings begin.......:flipoff2:
Harvester of Sorrow 07-01-2002, 07:58 PM I know that this is weak but: These things are FUCKING BITCHES!

Harvester of Sorrow 07-02-2002, 07:23 AM yeah...one half. I was able to get the short shaft off...but then I can't seem to get a good enough brace and pound the joint out of the long shaft...
I am such a loser:(
