i am going to go one tons in my soa cj5(with stock drivetrain). my first plan was to build some up with5.13s and detroits and run wheels with hardly any backspacing H1s or h2s. while looking for one tons a came across a built set. I found a narrowed set 60.5" dana 60 and 59.5" 14 bolt wms-wms.
i guess i will just run a regular steel rim with more backspacing.
and now i dont have to outboard the front i will run stock yj's and for the rear i will strech with xj springs with i antiwrap bar.

anyone run this setup wish they went full width or is this a good width for my cj5. i know it will be better than my stock narrowtracs:D

thanks for any advice in advance

go full width. So if you break a shaft you dont have to buy a custom replacement, you can just pick one up at the junk yard.

The only thing I never liked about the skinnies is that with a larger tire your turning radius can be smaller due to the tire hitting the frame. This is a major problem with YJ's and a minor one with 75+ CJ5's and 7's.

If you can get a deal on them then go for it!

For the front you could put on drw (dually) hubs and it would be at about 68.5 wide, then with h1s you would be about 76" outside of rim to outside of rim.

The rear depends on what hubs it already has whether you can make it wider. But 14 bolts are cheap, you could just buy a $50 srw that is 67" wide to match the front and swap the guts.

My brothers cj5 is about that narrow on 37's and it gets a little tipsy. I would go full width.

Mine are 62" with 3.5 backspaced 10x15s. Overall 78" wide. My f150 is only 74" wide. Running "full width" with little backspacing only moves the springs out and tires in so ya can't turn and the front hubs get destroyed on the rocks.:shaking: Plus it just looks funny.:D

so bjb your saying run the narrowed axle with 3.5" of backspacing and i will have good width good turing radius and have the added benefiet of hub protection.

i want to keep the cj5 streetable my 35"x12.5" baja claws stick out about halfway i dont run any flair and do not want to. they way i have it cops dont bother me i guess cause it is preety low compared to the common Fullsize trucks around me running 40"s if i run full width the tires will stick completely out with any rim with backspacing so thats why i was goin to run h2's.

if you guys got any more pros and cons about the narrowed 60's in a cj a would like to hear some more thanks.

and the most extreme wheelin i will do is rausch creek and south jersey pinelands.

Will those currie or spydertrac bearing units work on any dana 60. I know they are from a 450 but I like the idea of no service and being able to run water and mud without repackin.

I wouldn't go "full width". I'd narrow a front D60 by 4.5" on the long side which
gives you appx. 64.5" wms=wms. Then get a C&C 14b which is 63" for the rear.
If you can't find a C&C 14b, get a SRW 14b which is 67" wms-wms and swap
the hubs to dually hubs. That gets you to 63" wms-wms.
IMO 69" front and 67" back is too wide a track width for many trails.
The set up I've outlined is a nice happy medium.

I'm runnin narrowed 60's front and rear. If I had to do it again I wouldn't! Run the full width with hummer wheels way easier and cheaper. I ran into all kinds of small problems when installing this setup. I would happily trade my narrowed stuff for full widths!!! Any takers? (35 spline shafts,4.56gears, warn premium lockouts, and disc brakes all around).:smokin:

I cut 6" out of a Ford front 60 (1989 F350), then put DRW hubs on it. WMS to WMS is about 72". Using stock H1 wheels (7.5" backspacing), my front end is less than 80" wide.
This setup is pretty narrow and the lockouts are protected.

If you decide to cut an axle, take the time to mock it up under the jeep before you cut.

I had some trouble with driveline alignment when setting mine up. I wish I had discovered this before cutting the front axle. Adding 2" back to an axle SUCKS!
