I have searched.
I'm looking for a better explantion of how people have done home made spindles for swing out tire carriers AND info from people that have done spare tire carriers that carry a whole spare hub in them.
Thanks-

I think Rockstomper offroad makes a trailer spindle assembly for the purose of a tire carrier pivot. Cheap too, might be easier than trying to fab you own. As for the carrying a spare spindle, build it into the part that holds the tire, and cut the bolt flange off a knuckle and use that to weld the arm from the pivot too...

Here's a brief description and a few lousy pictures of how I did mine:
Instead of using a spindle with bearings as a pivot, I just used a length of pipe welded upright through the 2 x 4 square tube bumber. I then slipped a length of tube over the pipe and welded the swingouts to the tube. I added a couple zerk fittings, pipe caps on the ends and called it done. It is a tight fit so it doesn't rattle or vibrate. I figured that a bearing-type axle spindle wasn't needed since the swingout is only opened occasionally and doesn't need a spindle designed for high speed continuous RPMs.
As for the tire carrier itself, I incorporated the stock carrier onto my rack. I removed the stock carrier studs so that a front hub could be bolted to the outside of the carrier. I opened up the center of the carrier so that a stock spindle along with all of the bearings and a birfield could be slid into the hub from the back. An aisin lockout holds the birfield and spindle in place. A brake disk could be added too but is rarely needed and adds considerable weight to the assembly.
The pivot is almost the height of the tub:

The spindle and birfield slide in from the back:

The tire bolts to the hub which in turn is bolted to the stock (reinforced w/gussetts) tire hanger:

The spindle and birfield are held in place by the stock lockout:

Sorry for the bad pics. I need a digital camera!

For my spindle mounts I just bought a $20 trailer axle then took the sawall to the hub i until I had one 2 inch section that extended from the spindle sorta like an old key, used a grinder to make it round again. Weld the spindle into the bumper usually 2x2 then notch a 2x3 tube to accept a the hub section and weld together....then construct the balance........don't have any pictures but would post them if I had them.
