i just got into 4-wheeling and am wondering what people would suggest as a good starter vehicle. i only have about $6,000 to spend so could people suggest vehicles that would be in that range. Thanks :) Scott

A 4.0 YJ, or an EFI Toyota pickup.

Search the for sale board here and elsewhere - there are several already built trail rigs within that price range! :)

make sure that it is old so smog is not a prob, or trailer it eveywhere. It SHOULD have solid axles under it

'85 yota, 66-77 bronco, sami.. I dunno kinda depends what your needs are... you want something that will be a daily driver or trail rig only? Do you wheel in areas where its good to have something small or is width not a problem?

i already have a daily driver and i will be wheeling in areas like fordyce, barrett lake, rubicon and places aroun the sierra's w/ my dad probably. i would prefer a shorter wheelbase but i dont know where to start.

Id say a yota for beatablitly. They are cheap to upgrade and stout for there size.

An eb if you want a solid drivetrain with a v8.

I have a grand cherokee for sale, my first car and wheeler. The way it's set up it can tackle any trail depending on how much body damage you want. Basicly it will keep up with any vehical and drive good on the way home. If your interested you can pm me.:D only $5000

Do you have a tow rig or will you drive it there? ... just wondering if it needs to be street legal :p

sorry bent70 not really interested in a j**p. rerard, i would be driving to the trail so it would need to be street legal. if the price was right on a trailer i might invest in one but not sure at the time.

well if it is going to be your trail rig only then i say get a samurai. cut the rear part of the body off, lengthen it to about 100" wheelbase, slap a set of wagoneer dana 44's with 5.38's under a set of wrangler springs, put sumo 6to1 gears in the t-case, and run some 36-38" tires. if you do the work yourself you can have a go anywhere trail rig and do it all with in your budget. you can probably do it all including a winch for what you have to spend. maybe less.

I feel ya on not wanting a jeep:flipoff2: , well at least the unibody ones.
There is a reason yotas are so popular check out their forum and lurk there. They almost pulled me in but I wanted a V8 and always liked broncos. plus it was alittle cheaper to get my truck to the point it is than it would have been with a yota.

I say get a toyota, i had an 85 toy, extended cab, the extended cab was great, my friend hates his regualar cab 84 toy, not enough room for anything, but i still found i needed more space so i am gettin a 4runner, and wanted more seats, i would rather so a sas, because by the time u find a mint 84/85, u have to make a new front hanger to run 44044;s and new shock towers for flex, so in theory u have almost done a sas, also with an older toy with a solid axle u need an IFS steering box to run crossover preferably hysteer. and people swap in 86+ rear axles in there 79-85 for extra width, u don;t have to do this with a 86+. so my vote would be for a 4runner. up tp 89 for the convirtable:D I don't know what the rust is like where u live, but u have to check every inch of toyota frames from the cab or middle back, i got fawked over with my truck.:flipoff2:
