: Why doesn't my welder work well?

So I am grinding some welds an employee did and start to notice that they are looking kind of splattery and porous, this is a bit surprising because he is enrolled in welding classes and generally welds quite well.

When I asked him about it he blamed the welder, said it was welding shitty. When I want to check it out I found this:

:shaking:

I told him next time I see that I am going to make him eat a tub of tip-dip...

I don't see how people let that happen... it's pretty much habit for me to clean out the nozzle when I start, and again if it starts forming a ring on the inside.

WOW!

I clean it when I start and after I weld for a while it's habit to just tap the nozzle or scrape it if it's really stuck in there.

Depending how much I weld I also take the whole gun apart and clean it out, really pisses me off to get shitty welds from something that can be cleaned.

Wow.... That is kinda an obvious thing to keep an eye on while welding

if he's in a welding class, he obviously knows the effects that will have on the weld. tell him he has to clean that by smacking it against his head.

:shaking:did you ask him if hes passing his class?

Maybe its time you emailed that pic to his instructor and ask the teacher what he is teaching.

I don't see what the problem is!? :flipoff2:

I always like using somebody else's mig for the first time, cause you can easily tell how well of a welder/caretaker they are by the tip & nozzle.

Holy fuck, at first glance I thought that was the tip, but damn!

he's got the be the greatest welder ever. That fact that he was able to even use the welder with the tip looking like that is amazing. I really suck at welding so I'm paranoid with keeping my up clean

shielding gas is over-rated...an exerienced welder can get by without any.

Eh, I'm enrolled in a welding class right now and the instructor doesn't even look at our shit unless we show him so you never know.

Please elaborate.

pretty sure he was being sarcastic. Unless he is talking about using flux core shit :flipoff2: , hell its habit for me to just give the shield a few good taps before and after i run a bead, most of the spatter will just fall off, no need for dip IMO

I found that the dip makes more of a mess. I just scrap the inside of the nozzle out often. Keeps it clean enough for me. Reminds me... I need a new nozzle though. Mine is starting to wear out and get loose.

That guy probably thinks welding using the tack, tack, tack method is the schiznit too.:shaking:

I can't survive without the nozzle dip - makes a HUGE difference on keeping shit from building up fast.

I just purchased a tub of "Honey nozzle dip" that suppose to work in all temps without issues - riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight... Shit sucks ass, I ended up purchasing a new tub of regular nozzle dip.

Ooooh God - Billy Maze is on ANOTHER commercial - mighty putty now:shaking: dragging a tractor trailer around with it

I think I picked up a bad habit somewhere along the way. As soon as I stop a weld I tap the gun on a tube or something to knock the red ball on the end of the wire feed off. I just started cutting it off before I begin a new weld and it seems to help with a smoother start.

I only saw a nozzle loaded up like that one time at someones garage I visited, I couldn't believe it.

Do you want a tub of that crap?

I bought a tub like 5 years ago when I bought my first welder and I used it once. Made a huge mess.

Just easier to tap the end on the bench, or unscrew it off and clean it with the pliers.

The Nozzle Gel works much better when the end of your gun is hot. Do a couple welds first ,Dip it , run a couple inches of wire out and snip 'em off then try. If your gettin a mess all over you got too much nozzle gel doesn't need to be dunked in there 5 inches bout a 1/2 in or so

I actually switched to a spray anti-splatter that I like much better then the dip.

I always liked the dip after I learned not to dip it very deep and only do it when the tip has HOT

'til you get a better weldor, neither the dip nor the welder matters that much. :flipoff2:

So how often is it necessary to dip the nozzle? I've never really figured that out.

Depends how hot your welding more heat burns the gel off, but if your welding hot you don't need as much if any ,just gotta keep an eye on it

That's a good one, even I know that you need to clean out the tip every now and then
