: Lincoln Locker!

Just curious, I know a lincoln locker is welding the rear end(or front) but which spider gears need to be welded together? All four or just 1 on each side?
oh yeah and :flipoff2:

you weld the pinion to the ring gear. Some one told you a lie.

Weld them all together and then to the carrier as well. Atleast that is how some of my friends have done it.

Have you thought to search this is a pretty common question. Bet if you put welded diff in you would get plenty of info.

I've done it two ways, in a rear axle, we welded the side gears to the carrier, then the spiders gears to the side gears and the carrier, worked well, just make sure you don't make the carrier too brittle. In a front axle we tool the spiders and sides out (GM 10-bolt, so you can pop them out easy) and filled in the teeth so they wouldn't roll, slid them back in and viola! Removeable lincoln locker, worked good for a temporary (mud bog, etc.) but it was a bitch to turn.

I've done em both and like the fill in the teeth method better, when the gears are big enough. I think doing that with a 30 or 35 would just break 'em pretty quick. When the Jeep had a 20 rear I welded it between the teeth and then side/ spiders to the case and a couple of the welds had hairline cracks. Lasted two trailruns until the axle went in the dumpster from a fried wheel bearing.
The 14 bolt rear I have now has the teeth filled in. I've been beating the shit out of it, no problems.

i just weld where the spiders touch each other on both sides...never broke

do what chris g said but make sure that you dont do the welding all at once you need to give each weld time to cool or you will crack the gears. plus you need to make sure that you clean the area really f ing good before you put the oil back in you dont want any loose be-be's or loose metal to be floating around in your housing.

I used to be welded and I never had a problem with it except you might as well forget ever rotating your tires again and get used to the barking around corner of yeah and you'll never turn on a dime if its your rear.

thanks for the replies, but uh, I fuckin blew the rear end last night. searching for a D44 or an 8.8 right now.:mad3:

Pooter -

Degreed ME's that know what a wrench is, let alone the difference between MIG and TIG are extremely rare, valuabe in the workforce, and in demand. Get through the math, once that happens, the program rocks. Your friends, your rig, your honey, your beer and every person you know that isn't familiar with the demands of the program will never grasp what a biiiaaatch it is. And they will lure you away. Put em all on the back burner, knuckle down and get through it. I made it through that madness and now I can afford a nice MIG setup, and even gas for it. And fills too! I had a liberal arts degree before that and no garage, or rig, or toys, because managing a sporting good store just doesn't pay enough.

And when some poser says he's getting turbulent flow in his radiator to make it cool better, you will laugh your a$$ off. But the skills and experience available at this board contain everything else the program won't teach you: combine those two and you in fat-city. Good luck

yea Math sucks. BS EE

wait welding, was it, the heating and cooling process is importantl! With cast you want to pre heat, and post heat to slowly bring up adn bring down the temp. But on the carrier Id reccomend spot weld with time to cool, keep it cool, but do not spray watter on your welds! Let it naturaly cool.

What are you doing math for its summer!! :smokin:

sorry alittle off topic but a good engineer joke,

Two engineering students were driving across
campus when one said:
"Where did you get such a great JEEP?"
The second engineer replied: "Well, I was walking
along yesterday minding my own business when a
beautiful woman DROVE up In this JEEP. She threw
her self out of the jeep and onto the ground, took off all her clothes and said, 'Take what you want.'"
The second engineer nodded approvingly: "Good
choice; the clothes probably wouldn't have fit."
______

I never was so lucky, but engineering gets you the check to buy the parts to build the jeep.

lates.

that's been one of my biggest problems in getting through the maths: BEER, BITCHES, BEER, and friends

and BEER.
I'm tired of fuckin around.
Not having a good job or supporting parents doesn't help either but hey I'm trying.

I've told the same about it being a blast after the maths.
the homeade dune buggies is what lured me in.
Gaining knowledge and $$$$ is the second so I can build or finish building a bad ass jeep.

thanks for the replies and the kick in the ass.
P.S. I'm not taking any classes this summer. FUCK THAT!

have pre calc and calc left and maybe one other but I can't remember.
later:flipoff2:

gotta go get drunk now

Maby one other math class?? ME "mechanical engineer?" you will need like 6 math classes at least 3 full years of math! Cal I is the first math class, cal II, Vector Cal (cal III), Diffeq, Electro Magnetics (EM), and probibly a "Math for mechanical engineers", you will also have to take 2-3 Cal baised physics classes with labs!!

When you cant remember your degree requirements dont worry just go get drunk:nuke: Come on man pull it together.

if you stick with it there are cool senior design projects, at UofA a team of MEs did the dune buggy competition for the first time this year. they placed like 36th or so out of 90 some competitors I think.

I built a Robot: 41.6 Wattt motors, 15:1 gear reduction, 900PSI co2 with regulator, valve, and 15ftlbs piston to actuate a golf ball kicker on the soccerbot. When I was in school I built this whole beast fo a lousy 3 units of credit and they gave us a B becuase we had 2 guys drop from the group and our 80-page design review report had some english errors, thats school for your.

Mines the one on the left,

Edit: My pic wont upload Ill try later.

and by the way if you dont know what maths you have to take, sheeesss, are you in for a surprise:eek:, calc II is a bitcha and there is more to come, i here you can actually feel you brain frying in Circuit Math

Beer, Bitches, and Math.....

I have to disagree on the bitches. I'm not sure what schools ya'll went to, but the "bitches" were non existent in my school. The math isn't bad and neither are the engineering classes. It's all the sociology and bullshit classes that killed me. Finally made it through though and used to love my job (currently unemployed) with a BEME and MSEE (talk about a cross over).....so, where are all those jobs at for the people that know the difference between MIG and TIG? (do you get bonus points if you know correct gas mixes as well?) This area absolutely sucks for engineering work (Youngstown, Ohio).

Did the baja car race back in '91 for the midwest. Came in 7th out of 74 entries. Wouldn't trade all those skipped classes for the world when we were working on the car. It's a good thing that in any design project like that you have 2 or 3 people that work on it and 5 or 6 that stand on the side lines that bitch and moan about what was actually done. Those 5 or 6 tend to be the "less-desirables" or engineering.

as far as math is concerned...

26 quarter hours of Math for a B.E.
20 quarter hours of Math for a M.S.

Hey YJ, it's me Austin. Yeah UL Lafayette. I'm also a sophomore but I'm only past 109. I didn't know about those circuit maths and what not.

Now I don't know about Ohio but there's some fine fuckin women's down here, and Ross can vouch for that one. I'm workin on gettin a job right now and I've gotta move again in about a month, and still am waiting for my D44 to get here, but all in all I'm ready to settle down and get my work done.

Anyways, I'll be taking some ITEC classes this fall if I don't go work offshore, if I do go offshore, I'm sittin out a semester to save my money and be ready for spring.
