: Greenhorn Mapping Project

The first Project will be to Map the routes we are interested in keeping, and to map the routes we will help close.

We will meet at Greenhorn/Red Dog Bluff at 10 AM Sunday January 27th.

There are so many areas at Greenhorn, that some local expertise is needed.

(This means you Clamper):D

First project is to map BLM's areas. This is the area we need to file an Appeal to the Record of Decision on ASAP.

Lowell Hill
Chalk Bluff
Steep Hollow
Poore Mine
Red Dog (old town)
Star Mine

Pretty much every thing in the gold area on this map

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff97/hummbeebee/BLMGHPBB.jpg

We'll divide the area into 5 sections. We will need 2 or 3 rigs in each of the 5 groups. At least one with GPS ability, and one with a local expert on the area.Passengers will be note takers, on what we find in the area. Don't forget your cameras, as we will be logging this info and giving it to BLM.

Please sign up, and note the area you have the most experience with, and the area you would like to explore.

Please also note if you have GPS ability.

A couple of Motorcycles/ATV's would be great too.

Thanks!!!

That's fine, if the H3 can make it, so can you.

We'll just have to keep you off the hillclimbs:D

Thank you!

I'd like to go but i don't want to be a boss or anything.

What are we looking for on these trails? skill level, historical value, etc?

EDIT: I have a GPS, its old though

Bebe
01-15-2008, 09:38 PM
Trail location
Skill level
Environmental Impact (if any)
Loop?
One Way?
Does it cross Private Property?
Signing Trail heads
Naming Trail heads?

We will also be scouting for trash areas for the next clean-up.

No bosses this time.Just folks who know the areas.

I will ask "Buster" to join us as well.

my experience with all those places are low, steep hollow/lowell hill i've never gone past the bridge area and all the other ones i've never really heard of those names.
I want to go with more experienced 4wheelers so i can learn to trust my jeep more and i don't think i can do that without someone who is in front of me or behind me that can pull me out if i get stuck. I can help map and GPS and my GF will write stuff down.

So take 80 East to 49 North to Grass Valley/ Nevada City

Take the Sacramento Street exit in Nevada City

Go straight past the Chevron Station (last stop for gas)

At the next intersection veer right onto Boulder St.

Boulder turns into Red Dog Rd.

Stay on Red Dog Rd.

Red Dog Rd ends. Turn Right on Banner Lava Cap

You will see Red Dog signs in about 100 feet, turn Left on Red Dog.

Follow it until you see at the Creekbed in front of you.

We will be on your left (Called Red Dog bluff).

10 AM

When you pass Hwy 65 off I-80 (Rocklin/Roseville), it will take you aout 1:15 mins to get to Greenhorn Creek.

I will try to be there. I have a 4wd, dirt bike, handheld GPS, and am very familar with most of the area, but there are still lots and lots I haven't explored yet (and may never get to! ).

For the most part you guys don't need to worry much about getting stuck.

We should really try to get the AMA??? and Nevada County Woods Riders in on this. There is a ton of single track out there that I'm not as familiar with and that I'm sure we/they would like to keep too. The dirt bikes can cover a lot of area very quickly as well. The more stuff we map, the more stuff we're likely to get to keep if they make their cuts somewhat percentage-wise.

Also, Saturdays are usually better for me, FWIW but I can usually make Sundays work.

I know there isn't much chance of getting stuck down there but last time i tried climbing the road to get to the rest of the greenhorn creek area i couldn't, it happened twice. there's a new holiday inn right off the freeway in downtown. or you could camp...however i don't suggest that because it's really cold up here, below 30 at night. if you stayed at the holiday inn i could meet you there in the morning and then you could follow me up.

Did you air down? It makes a HUGE difference, especially in the loose gravel.

Lockers will also make a huge difference in traction... so much that you'll probably start breaking axles. Carry spares. :D

Yeah i air down, My old tires seemed to air down better than my new ones. The new ones are more stiffer so i think i have to air down more than i did with my old ones.
I hope to be there, i am going to go drive my Jeep in a few and i hope whatever is wrong with it goes away or i can figure it out before then. I have EFI crap now.:mad3:

I'll definitely be there, since I live 5 minutes up the road. No GPS, but I know the area quite well so if someone needs a seat and has GPS, they are more than welcome.

Cobra 5.0.... where did you get your last gas? Been some funky fill ups for me lately, might try some fuel dryer. If you need a ride, let me know.

Snow in the Greenhorn usually isn't a problem too much, but ice on the paved roads getting there is. Be sure and take your time and watch for the deadly black ice. Airing down and 4x4 don't buy you much when it feels like your a bar of soap on the bottom of a wet bathtub. All that helps is slowing way-the-fawk-down. Its actually safer on the roads if there is a bit of snow.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and helping.

OK Going down my driveway to go to the gym tonight, hit some black ice and did a 180. Almost went off the cliffs and i had to hold the brake down and lift the clutch in reverse and it sat there and spun the tires :( I finally got it to pull back from the edge but its sitting in the ditch. I looked and i don't think my 4 wheel drive is working, there no evidence of the front wheels spinning when i had it in the mud/snow. I can see where my rear tires were spinning on my driveway. If the front wheels were working i would have pulled away from the cliff no problem.
Would i know if maybe something is broken in my front axles? I am 100% sure it was in 4wheel low going down my hill.

Well I had fun yesterday trying to find all of you. I went to start my Jeep on Saturday and found out the battery was dead. So I threw it on the charger. Yesterday morning I put it in the Jeep and it would not start. I grabbed the battery out of the old tow rig and it was dead also. I hooked up the jumper cables but it still did not want to start. finally after about 45 min it started. I headed to Rebies to get a new battery and headed out to greenhorn. I got out there about 11 and started looking for all of you. every person I saw said they saw a group and told me were so I headed in that direction. After covering most of the area I know including going to the washed out bridge on Lowlle Hill I headed home about 4 pm. Sorry I could not help, there is always next time.

Once we started to climb Buckeye and hit the 3800' mark, the snow kinda made mapping the side trails pretty much impossible.

Lots of fun in the snow. I think the run Bebe took actually would have been easier.

Did you guys get all the way to Dutch Flat?

We returned to the meeting spot at about 3:30 but figured ya'll had split by then. Our little 3 hour tour took longer than expected.:grinpimp:

We got to Secret town road, at the power house. We ran into alot of gated off roads. We got back to the meeting spot about 4ish. Then went to the cemetary (sp) and played around there.

Nice story...:flipoff2: (it was cold, rainy, just didn't wanna fuggen go) Is what I heard.
Just kiddin man, must have just missed ya in a couple places. I got back to my house about 5:15 ish.

:flipoff2::flipoff2: I guess I deserved that. Trust me I would have felt better sitting in my rig soaked covered in mud and water in your group instead of by myself wandering around. It was cold and wet but still fun. I wish I would have been with you guys It sounds like you had fun. If I did not trailer and just drove from my house in Gold Run I think I would have met you guy by the washed out bridge.

well damn then, just missed ya. Too damn soggy to stay around and wait for ya though. we were beginning to feel like ducks.

We should have captured a good amount of data on Buckeye Rd. which we took to Chalk Bluff. We also took the right fork on the Cemetery road which took us to a nice overlook of the Red Dog Diggins, although you couldn't see it (the mining park is YouBet Diggins I believe).

Too much snow on Buckeye to take many side trails.

what's the dealio on uploading data?

Had a great time riding with you guys, since it was my first wheelin' here in a long time.

Now I gotta get my Burb built and attempt to keep it from looking like the one we found on the trail.

My GPS must be too old, it ran out of memory quickly and became worthless. Guess it's time for an upgrade.

Not abandoned, rolled and in the process of being recovered by its owner.

They got it out, no problems.

Jeep is fixed! :) Just drove it home. HELLA snow on the ground. Almost a foot here at my house. I didn't make it up the driveway though, driveway is slick :(
