: Need OHV property liability insurance ASAP
redbaron 07-01-2002, 08:35 PM Our club has the option of leasing some land to use for recreational wheeling. This will not be used for competitions or anything like that. It will just be for club trail rides for club members. The only problem with this lease is that we have to have a $1 million liability insurance on the property.
Currently, we are having trouble even finding anyone/place that will even quote it, due to the motorized aspect of it. Does anyone know of any insurance companies that will carry this?
Big Rich - Where do you get insurance for your events?
Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks
TrailKeeper 07-01-2002, 08:59 PM Tim,
We currently use special event insurance for trail rides and competitions. It runs $1000 to $2000 PER EVENT, depending upon the length and type of event. We are working with the insurance company to put together a blanket policy that will include our events, competitions, trail rides, and will also cover the property in between events.
Our organization - The Trail Keepers Foundation - would like to be able to offer liablity insurance at reduced rates to clubs lik yours by "pooling" many events and tracts of land into one large policy to cover everything. Similar to how AAA works for covering towing service, or how a credit union offers reduced rates to members.
How much land are you talking about? Will the land be for your exclusive use, or are there other activities occuring on the land? Does the current land owner have any type of insurance in place?

redbaron 07-01-2002, 09:08 PM Trailkeeper - Currently, it is only 60 acres. But, there is potential for more. Just not at the current moment. Total, this coal company has about 2000 acres surrounding the area we are leasing. At this time, with it being only 60 acres, it will be exclusive to our club. And yes, the coal company currently has insurance on the property.
DRM - Thanks man! I hadn't even thought about them. We did contact the Badlands in Attica. They gave a lead, but were not real forthcoming on who they had.
Thanks guys!
flimmy 07-01-2002, 09:24 PM I have a friend in a atv club that leases 900-1200 acres of property from several different owners. He was telling me they found insurance for about $1000 for a year, and that covered the 3-4 poker runs the club has per year. The runs are open to anyone not just club members. I will talk to him in the next 4 days and let you know what co. they got there police from. Btw it's for $1 million of liability I think.
J-Bone 07-02-2002, 12:02 AM 1000 to 2000 bucks for an event, that seems REALLY cheap.
I run with some guys that do land speed racing at El Mirage dry lake. It is all on BLM land (you can't sue the gov't) but yet we have to run serious insurance (exact number I don't have) and they have to have a real tech inspection--roll cage, no stock seats--only racing seats, fire bottles, fire suits, window netting, arm-leg resistrants, chutes, etc., etc,. AND medical personell and ambulance on site.
Usually some dumb ass on a dirt bike not involved with the event piles into another and takes the medical and ambulance to help get his sorry ass to the hospital, meanwhile we don't race until it returns. All on our dime
TrailKeeper 07-02-2002, 06:59 AM It is cheap because we aren't racing. Racing would drastically increase the cost.
This may be a moot/ stupid point but I dont have to have any kind of insurance to lease and hunt on a piece of property, in fact, some of the hunting leases I have signed specifically express that you are hunting at you own risk (or the legal equivalent of this).
I dont see why hunting is any less risky than wheeling. In fact I would say it is more dangerous. I hear about accidental shootings in hunting accidents all the time but I cant remember ever hearing of a death while wheeling...
I dunno...maybe a very well drawn up legal paper to sign releasing any responsibility of any kind to anyone for wheeling on the land...
Let people cover their own injuries under their own health insurance!
Good luck........
(also I like the idea!!!)
Try www.k&kinsurance.com I know they do alot of circle track policies, They seem to know the ins and outs of motorsports......:)

We used them for some events last year - didn't have a single accident - they dropped us because they are trying to get out of insuring offroad events.

Just because you have people sign a waiver doesn't mean they won't TRY to sue you anyway. And sometimes just the cost of defending yourself is worse than the judgement.
I think Redbaron's problem is the land owner is requiring the insurance.
I have a call into my insurance company and I hope to get some info in the next day or so.
It figgures, they are always flappin' their gums about how they can insure "anything", when actually they "Don't like that sport or activity" Good luck to you and your quest, I (sadly) believe that all 'wheelin will be on private land in the next 10 years or so.Flame me or prove me wrong.....PLEASE!!;)
Pavemen 07-02-2002, 11:04 AM My wife works in excess insurance (hard to place stuff, i.e. DUI's, bars, trucking companies, etc) but they only write in CA. However, she talked to some folks in the office and was told that you might want to try:

TrailKeeper 07-02-2002, 07:02 PM I spoke to my agent this afternoon. He is going to try to get some numbers to me tomorrow, but with the holiday coming up it may have to be Monday or Tuesday. I will PM you as soon as I find out anything.

smurfsdad 07-02-2002, 08:31 PM Try Mcnaughton insurance. I cant find a link, if you cant find them PM me and i will dig up the info on them.
redbaron 07-03-2002, 04:01 AM Thanks everyone! We are trying every lead that you guys gave. Hopefully, we can get the coverage that we need.
Trailkeeper is right, the land owner is the one requiring the insurance. Basically all they are doing is getting themselves out of the liability by leasing all their ground out.
Once again, thanks! If anyone has anymore suggestions, post'em!
