A co-worker at work has a 1996 Chevy 4x4 1500. The transmission when placed in reverse nor nuetral it still wants to go foreward.
He was told he needs a new tranny. I call bullshit. I told him I would check the shifter and solenoids. BUT I am not an expert on Chevy's or automatics..........But I know who to ask.:D So tell me what you think Thanks

Reverse is a full manual gear, no electronics other than pressure control. So, If it goes forward in reverse, you may have a failed low reverse clutch, or a failed reverse input clutch. Either way, pull the trans and rebuild time!

Actually, on second thought, it it goes forward in neutral, than you may have some more hard part damage, Like a froze up sprag.

Thanks for the info I'll tell him. I had a 1988 Chevy 1500 with the TH700R4 at 136,000 the over drive and 3rd went out. I had it rebuilt pay good money had it fixed two more times for the same thing Rebuilt it myself 2 times then decided fuck automatics. I drive a stick.

A friend of mine years later when we were talking aboout it told me the stock basket for 3rd was not built very well an aftermarket one would have fixed it. I told him too late now hahaha. But big mike was a tranny guy. Great guy.

I'd have to double check the powerflow, but I believe forward in neutral can really only be caused by a hanging forward clutch on a 4L60E just by process of elimination. I could be wrong there.

I guess it doesn't really matter...the consensus is that it wasn't bullshit...he needs a new tranny.

you are correct something in the forward pack is staying applied however soemthing is already burnt up or broken you cant be in reverse and forward at the same time you would essentailly have a trans brake in first the forward clutch and low roller are applied , in 2nd the forward and the 2-4 band are applied in third the forward and the third back is applied and in 4th the forward the 3-4 pack and the 2-4 band are applied...in reverse which is a manual function the reverse drum is applied turning the rear planet sungear and the low reverse clutches are applied holding the rear planet rung gear while the forward drum is turning the reverse drum. I would say that the reverse drum is smoked up and there is something applying the forward clutches leak, broken part however he will need a rebuild
