Any one tow with 99 327v8- 02 Silverado? How does yours tow, Mine wont tow any faster than 70mph any reason why. Should I get a chip, I have flowmaster, and K&N also I run 265 tires that are stock size.

I would open the glovebox and look at the build codes that are on the decal. The codes are read left to right ---top to bottom,
alphanumerically. If the code reads GU6 you have 3.42 gears.
If you have GT4 you have 3.73 gears. You will not likely have GT5 code which means 4.10 gears. G80 means you have a locking diff in the rear axle.
also------did the truck come with a towing package stock ???

Well, my 01 Suburban has the 5.3 with 3.73 gears. Towed to Moab and back and did 70-80 most of the way. Big hills around Albuquerque had me doing around 60. No mods to the motor.

My '92 F1500 K Blazer pulls OK. I have 5.7L, factory tow package, with an auto w/cooler ... BUT it doesn't stop worth a HOOT!
I put in new brakes all around and it still wasn't much better.
Other than that, I still love my Cheyanne ... "Shy Annie" as I call her ... I just don't want to tow with it any more.

I tow with a '01 Tahoe. Its got 4wd, the 5.3, and 4.10 gears. It tows well for what it is. It will tow my 4Runner in extreme comfort at 75mph all day on flat ground. On the bigger hills it slows down considerably to say 60 or so with my foot buried to the floor. The Tahoe is stock except for some BFG A/T's 285s.

It does not tow effortlessly like my old '99.5 F350 PSD CC 4x4 did (F350 hauled 2 trucks easier than the Tahoe hauls 1), but it does get the job done safely and comfortably.

My 98 K1500 wimps out towing the trailer too. I've got 3.42's and 265's. I tow in 3rd gear only and it does better. Never cared to go over 70 towing 5500lbs anyway. Tried 3rd gear instead of OD?

Shut up seapickle.................. I'm thinking of getting one of these 1500, you think it would pull a yota at 70 up the hills?

I had a 99 ex-cab 4wd shortbed, 3.73's and the 265's. With the extended part of the cab loaded and the bed loaded with the camper shell on, I towed my jeep on a trailer to moab and back. Going I took it easy because a friend's combo wouldn't go very fast. We left early on the way back only time I slowed down was for towns. It pulled great and still got decent mileage (11.5 at 75 to 80). That was from Moab to Reno on Highway 50. I never felt like it needed more power. Just let it rev to 4000 rpm's, that's where those motors are making there power, let it rev a little and it will surprise you.

Don't be afraid to let the engine rev a little as pointed out above. Even my old TBI 350 (that ran out of steam around 4,500) was strictly a 3rd gear proposition when towing, and I never felt it was running too hard even when we greatly exceeded 70 MPH (I don't recommend that, but I was trying to keep up with a leadfoot friend).

a Z-71 is not a type of truck....it is a package that you buy that goes on the truck (z71 decal, bilsteins,etc.). Most trucks with this package has a 3.73 gear ratio, I bet you have 4.10 gears.

i am a little bit more knowledgable in vehicles then to think that a z71 is a type of truck. i might have 4.10's but that is with 35's not stock tires and gears. with 4.10's my truck is pretty close if not the same as it was stock. at 75 with stock gears(3.55's) and stock tires(29") the motor turned around 2000 RPM's. with the 4.10's and 35's it still turns 2000 RPMs at 75. i dont see what any of this has to do with the fact that his truck wouldnt keep up with mine on hills. are you trying to imply that the 4.10's magically make the truck have more horsepower and torque on hills? if anything his should have been able to leave my truck seeing as his is 15 years newer, stock, and has the tow haul mode on the tranny....

I kinda got it backwards...... Its obvious that you have a lower gear ratio than his truck , which will tow more. Back in 1999, you could order a Z71 with a 5 liter motor, they are a little rare. The most popular are 5.7 vortec with 3.73's. It would be interesting to find out why they differ in power and towing capabilities. Maybe theres something done to the motor and mums is the word...
There has been reported differences done to motors in the past that make their performance go up. sorta like a practical joke that the builder/installer has done at the factory. who knows ???

I tow with the same kind of truck (minus the exhaust and spacer) and it does fine. 75+ is no problem. Gas mileage is good too :D

i tow with an 01 327, auto, high way gears, and taller tires, do to the bling bling wheels and all i do is push the little tow button on the shifter, and it will accelerate up hills and hold speed with no problems.
With just the usuall stuff, its a jeep nothing lighter then normal, And all i have is a k&n filter, oh yeah and flowmaster and have to change the fuel filter often dont no why on that but you can always tell a difference. I like it and it dosent get to bad of gas milage:D
