I was told this might work, so I tried it. Loosened up the nuts'n bolts on the tcase shift linkage a little bit, and voila! 2WD low range. The shift interlock pill is still in, and in good shape as far as I remember.
Now, how reliably does it work? This thing going to pop out of gear a lot, do you think? I'll know in a couple of days, it'd be nice to get an idea ahead of time though. The tcase has about 70K and was freshened up last year.

That's how my buddies 77 CJ-5 is. It had a 3" body lift on it, and for the longest time we thought that the 4WL didn't work, but it turns out that because the shift mechanism is worn out it had 2WL and the body was just keeping it from shifting into 4WL. BTW, we are tearing the D20 apart, and we can't get the shifters off, does anyone know how to do this, they seem jammed in there. :mad3:

if you are talking about the shift rails you have to completely dismantle the case. Im going with the front output off a dana 18 to get my twin sticks. By doing this I found you have to tear down the entire t-case to get to one set screw.

You have to remove the set screws and rotate the rods inside the shift forks. When you rotate them the spring loaded ball won't catch on its groove anymore, and will come right out. Same on reassembly.
