I believe the date for the highlakes snow run is going to be Feb 2nd. My buddy throws a snow run every year now and this is the 3rd year its happening. Last year was cool and there was like 10 trucks. sounds like there should be atleast 15 trucks this year. we meet at the home depot off skyway in chico around 8am or so. its wanted that you have atleast 35s and locked so theres not a huge hold up of people being stucks. if anyones interested post up.

Some folks who normally wheel the Highlakes will be in a ham radio class that same day. Ken Knull is organizing the class. He has information about it on his website:

http://www.friendsofthehighlakes.com/

Have fun on this run!

i still need drivelines for my truck. also i dont have a skid or anything yet for my duals. the factory crossmember is holding up the cases and its in the way of my front driveline. im gunna see if i can cut some of it out of the way and run it. ghetto, yes. will i be wheeling with all my friends, yes. :)

You don't need a skid plate for snow! It's squishy :smokin:

As for drivelines, I just by the tube from bi-rite and run it. I've never had a problem with homemade round drivelines in the front or the rear.

i have to drive mine there and back and i dont think 30mph up and down skyway will work. as far as crossmember ya i need something other than the stock one cause the front shaft is going to angle down right through it.

You know 35's and locked is equipped enough. I wouldn't mind one bit if I came across a group like that as long as they were willing to let a faster, better equipped rig pass. It's public land, vehicles like that are somewhat prepared and have every right to be there. I had fun on 35's when I first started out and last year my best snow day was in an open/open rig I had just SAS'd on 35's.....old school

Not my vehicle... I rode bitch:eek:

Thank god I was down the road talking to someone else.:grinpimp:

Mike was trying to get some stock full size Chev truck unstuck that was in front of us. I guess he let the other guy hook the tow strap up to a fricken motorcyle lock cable(about 5' long with eyelets on it and a small lock). Well, just say the fricken cable broke and came back and slapped his windshield.

We cut out that half so the broken glass wouldnt keep falling inside.

hey casey, i should have an empty seat if you dont mind sharing with my pup when she gets cold.

as for requirments, its cool if someone wants to wheel 33s and open/open, just im not going to babysit them all day. everyone should have their own recovery gear and be smart enough to know their limits. if you go to the snow without at least a shovel and a snatch strap youre an idiot and deserve to be stuck. i dont mind helping someone who can help themselves.

ill be selling usage of the winch to the highest bidders all day though. ;)

I was up there yesterday and the snow is getting DEEP. 33's won't cut it, locked or not. The truck I was in had 35's and was fully locked and it wasn't going anywhere that a bigger rigs didn't already go. The bigger rigs were running 39.5's and 40's and they were getting stuck like crazy. Eventually we got to a point where we couldn't go any farther no matter what. Winches and recovery straps were in heavy use. One guy even burned up his winch. Add to that it's going to snow all week and we're all in for trouble. Hope someone has 44s =) I'll try to post some pics later tonight

Hey Ken,

You can park your tow rig and trailer at the cabin, there is plenty of space as long as we can still make it to sterling city. Don't know how much snow is going to be on the ground on Saturday.

I fixed my cowl, rear wheel seal on the 14 bolt and found a broke motor mount. Ill fill it up and throw all the crap in the jeep tonite. Should be at home depot around 7:45. I heard a rumor of going up through butte meadows due to ice and chains required in magalia.? We decidding tomorrow morning or?

porterwagner
02-01-2008, 05:20 PM
hey if you guys are leaving home depot around 8, you'll probably be at stirling city by a little after 9ish. I think I'll leave magalia around 9 to go up towards fernandos since it looks like thats where a lot of people will be meeting and unloading trailers. Roads are good all the way through magalia, and i'm sure they are decent on up towards stirling. Maybe fernando will give us a up to date road forecast for the road from magalia to stirling. I don't think you'll have a problem getting up there. So here is the forecast from the weather channel,
Saturday: Rain and wind. High 41F. Winds SSE at 15 to 25 mph. Rainfall near a quarter of an inch.
Saturday night: Windy with rain likely. Low near 40F. Winds S at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 90%. Rainfall near a half an inch.

that equals a lot more snow, now lets hope the bulk of it comes in later in the afternoon. channel 7 news guy says: snow starts around 6 am lightly maybe, and at least getting heavier into the afternoon. snow level 1500 feet. It definitely won't be like how it was today.
channel 12 guy says windy, snow level 2000, (p-town will get snow again) and it'll all be here around the afternoon.
BE PREPARED!!! See you all in the morning, later, Torey.

heres a quick heads up if anybody checks this before they leave. 7:28 am report. SNOW in magalia already and it's coming down good... about 1/2"inch already and 1/4 on the road. and it'll probably be close to an inch in about a half hour at the rate its coming down. doubt this will help cause you've all already left, but what does it matter cause snows what we want!! later.

yeah sunday was the day to go up, it dumped all day saturday. i ended up just going back to inskip and went snowboarding up by the old rope tow, snowshoed in, built a little kicker and just rode and hiked and watched the snow continue to dump!!! Then on the way back my driver side wiper quit working, what a pain in the a** trying to look out the window on left hand turns and driving gangster style to the right on all straightaways and right turns!! Met a few new people. I learned that TOYO MT's SUCK IN THE SNOW!! Started them off at 10lbs, then to 6, then 3!! I thought they might be like how my old mtrs were, but nope. They definitely do great in the rocks and dirt, but don't perform in the snow very well. There were times where they would mash, but then they'd just want to dig. Once I put it in low low and just creeped it would stay up, but who wants to drive like that all day!! I'd rather mash in the snow. But all and all it was a fun trip and thanks to those who gave me a tug here and there!! I don't know how many more trips I'll take up to the snow in the yota, I think i'd prefer a snowmobile for future trips!
