: Drilled Bushings-Final Chapter

Well, I had access to a fork lift yesterday and was able to see just how much flex the drilled bushing have added. ALOT! I was very impressed considering the fact that it's a DSII (which aren't know for stellar flex). My limiting factor up front right now is shocks. They bottom out under full compression. I will be able to get about another 1.5" of compression with taller shock mounts, but that will have to wait until the fall.

I was able to get the PS front wheel almost 33" up, and the last time I was on a fork lift it was more like 27"-28". Anyway, I have some shots of the truck and the bushings if someone can post them for me.

comparison shot, 25" with about 4 more to go according to shock travel with stock arms and shock placement, ( that damn bobcat was definitely more jumpy than a fork lift going up, and I didn't want to risk it. Anyway, as you can see, the axle definitely "unloads" better on Greg's rig with the drilled bushes.

wow, old pic. i really should post a new pic, but there isnt anything to post a pic of!

most of the parts from that truck are history, only the drivetrain and interior i saved.

Greg,

Man, that looks really good. Very nice balanced flex and plenty of it as well. The amount your got out of the front (and back) looks awesome.

So Greg whats it drive like on the road - there must be a down side???

First pic is of the compressed bushing. Notice how it's not even close to contacting the mounting bracket. The second pic is of the extended bushing (both on the front-couldn't shoot the rears without crawling under the rig). Once I get my shock towers extended, the bushings will probably max out on the mounts.

As far as driving, I really can't tell a difference. It still drives like shiatt!:D

Seriously though, no noticeable difference. Castor is WAY off 'cause of the lift, and I have bump steer as well. Installing lockers next week (Detroit rear and Tru-Trac front), so the TT should help with the wander from lack of castor.

I'm waiting on some tie rod ends to complete my dropped steering arm and I'm also making a dropped panhard, so those should cure the bump steer. Other than that, drives great.

My sways have been completely removed, but the RTE springs help with that. You just have to get used to the body roll. I'm OK living with it as it was a pain to keep disconnecting the sways. I like to be able to just pull off the road and go.

Anyway, thanks for the compliments. It's good to know that my efforts are finally paying off. Thanks for the encouragement and all of the advice. If we ever meet, I owe you guys some :beer: :beer: :beer: .

Damn, forgot the important stuff. The following measurements were from the top of the spring to the bottom of the spring:

Front: Compressed= 8.25"
Extended= 17.5"

Rear: Compressed=8.5"
Extended= 18.25"

The rear measurements are approximate since I wasn't willing to lie on my back under the rig. Again, once the front towers are raised, I should have the amount of flex pretty well balanced from front to rear.:smokin:

That is some damn nice flex. I am inspired to do some drilling.

That is damn nice. Now what exactly had been done? I think I missed part 1. :confused:

Very impressive none the less:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

OK. Here's a list of my suspension mods to date:

Front; RTE 3" springs (netted 3.5" after winch & bumper install), DDF 1" spacers, Rancho 9000 shocks, extended brake & ABS/ETC lines, relocted steering damper to rear of axle between axle and tie rod, removed front x-member (until I can design a new one to clear prop shaft), removed sway bar, drilled the radius arm-to-axle bushings per Sam Houston's directions.

Rear; RTE 3" springs, Expedition Exchange spring retainers, DSI lower spring perches (req'd to fit retainers-gives .75" additional lift), GBR rear prop shaft (replaces rotoflex joint w/ true u-joint), Rancho 9000 shocks, custom upper and lower shock mounts (positions shocks at 45 degree angle giving 2:1 travel ratio), removed sway bar, and drilled radius arm-to-axle bushings.

Future mods: Fab taller front shock towers to allow front suspension to completely compress (additional 1.5"), dropped steering arm, and dropped panhard rod. That should about do it.:eek:
