Since the side by sides are more often used for utility purposes, does anyone have any experience using these to spread salt? I posted in the ATV forum too:
I maintain a private road almost a half mile long and pretty steep (~18%) primarily with my Honda Rancher. I got a winch and plow with it when I bought it and it works sweet. Even when the snow gets deep, I can plow down hill and due to the grade, haven't had any trouble.
Salting is another story. Two of the neighbors (there are 4 homes on the road) have spreaders that just don't work. I believe this is because these are really designed for pelletized fertilizer and not for road/rock salt. We could probably get pelletized calcium to work, but that would be major $$ to maintain the entire road with. Another situation is that the rock salt clumps and sticks together, but also because it quickly overloads these units.
Anyone have any suggestions? Anything that actually works? I've been looking at a couple heavy dute ATV spreaders on ebay - one by Buyers and one by On Time called a Bumper Buddy, the second one is sold as a game feeder, but the ebay adds say they are OK for salt too.
