: Rockwells under my Zuk
ford381stroker 01-18-2008, 06:25 PM Tomorrow I am picking up my Rockwells. The Rockwells are currenlty on a CJ frame. The wheelbase was setup at 113 1/2". The four link front and rear looks funny but I will post pics as soon as I get them cleaned up.
Plans:
Shave front and rear pumpkins, Truly lock the front and rear third members, Possibly get rid of the current 4-link setup and go to grader ball front and rear. I don't like the setup of the current links. I will be running Willwood pinion brakes front and rear. I will post pics once I get the Sammi in the shop and get the 1 tons out from underneath it. The Rockwells are currently on 44" tires and I plan to run that size when the build is completed.
Feel free to post up pics of what your wheelbase is at and what tires you are running. Always open to suggestions and constructive criticism.
LostZuk 01-18-2008, 06:44 PM Nice find, cannot wait to watch the build!
ford381stroker 01-19-2008, 04:39 PM picked them up today. this is going to be so sweet! I did flex out the suspension after I pulled it off the trailer. It is currently on 44's and I had the rear tire exactly 44" off the ground. I will take pics tomorrow after church if I get a chance. I put the calcualations into the RTI score calculator and I am only at 780.

Pray to the Gods of Offroad for a Quick and Positive build while you are there!
suzuki1750 01-19-2008, 07:40 PM Why would you ever need rockwells under a zuk? They are going to be heavier than the zuk itself. Other than "something different", whats the point? :shaking:

ever think that maybe just maybe it might be what he wants to do:shaking:
ford381stroker 01-20-2008, 10:47 AM Previously I had a Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear. Everyone kept saying I could only run 40's. The axle shafts couldn't take 44's. I want to run 44's so I picked up the Rockwells. I shouldn't have any issues now. A bonus is the factory gearing and the pumpkin height on the Rockwell is quite a bit higher (once it is shaved) than the Dana 60 I have in it right now. Combined with the 44's I should be able to get over rocks much easier. I will post pics of the front axle ride height today if possible. The front axle is shaved and I still have to finish the rear. Looks killer!

Agreed this should look wild.
ford381stroker 01-20-2008, 04:28 PM Got the Sammi in the shop this afternoon. Started pulling the axles out. The suspension will be out tomorrow night. I did some measuring tonight and I am contemplating using part of the CJ frame. It is beefy and all the links in the center are currently mounted to it. I am almost 1.5" away from tucking the Sammi frame inside of the CJ frame.
I will get some pics up soon. Thanks for watching. Tonight my buddy and I got out the tape measure and at 113" the front axle will be sitting at the tip of the front fender and the rear axle will be sitting at the tip of the rear of the tub. I will have 22" of tire/wheel in front and behind the tub. This should give me a super angle of approach and departure.
The current CJ frame has a belly clearance of 34" at 113 1/2" wheelbase. I won't know if I need to drop the coils down some until I get things under the Sammi.

A Dana 60 and a 14 bolt handles 44s with a full size rig. Your Sammi's turning radious is gonna suck. Ever watch the Ultimate Truck Channange? A bunch of trucks run 1 ton chevy drivelines.
Rockrenegade 01-21-2008, 06:03 AM Go to page three and check out the "rockwells on a zuk" thread. He's running 48" goodyears. Pretty cool I guess. The wheel base is really long for the rig, and it's probably only like 115". He also has the hubs out so it's really wide. If I were you I would keep the hubs flipped in. Hubs in, are at 69" like your 60. His sami case seemed to hold up. As far as turning, run a 10" ram or pull the stops out and run a 12" ram. Rockwells are capable of turning really sharp.

Yep, we will have to see:D
ford381stroker 01-21-2008, 05:48 PM The hubs have been flipped on both axles. All the studs have now been replaced with right hand thread studs and nuts. Got home too late from work and it is too dark. Hope to get pics tomorrow.
ford381stroker 01-26-2008, 05:56 AM Rocks are going to be sitting under the Zuk by the end of the day. Will not be connnected but placement should be about right. Will have pics for sure.
purevil71 01-26-2008, 06:54 AM Got pix yet?? Come on man, were all waiting here!!! :flipoff2:
ford381stroker 01-26-2008, 03:29 PM Here are the pics from today.
1. Here are the axles I pulled this morning. Dana 60 Kingpin front axle and Corporate 14 bolt rear

2. Here are the 4" YJ's that the axles were mounted too.

3. Here were the new 40's and MRT wheels (which are for sale) I just got for the 1 tons. I was upgrading from the 36" Iroks I was running in the third pic below.

4. Here is the pic of the Sammi after I put the Sammi up in the air and rolled the Rockwells under it just to see the fit. The axles are sitting on bald 44's right now. I will strip down the axles this week and start cleaning and working them over.

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture183.jpg
AttemptingTJ 01-26-2008, 04:27 PM Thats a sick and awesome build, but you would have been fine with the d60/14bff on 44's with such a small/light rig and gutless engine. Hell you could probably run 54" boggers on the axles you had in there :D
But its still cool and different, and you will never have to worry about axles again.
purevil71 01-26-2008, 04:48 PM Looks killer, but how you gonna get it back out of the garage.......lol
Big91RustyBucket 01-26-2008, 04:58 PM Looks good ... :D
ford381stroker 01-26-2008, 05:20 PM I will put my other set of 44 TSL's on it and air them down. It will sit lower than it sits right now. I have to do some fender trimming on the front and rear. I still have the factory gas tank and skid which will be coming off this week. I will be taking off the step bars on the side and boat siding it. Got alot of work to do!
ford381stroker 02-01-2008, 05:07 PM Today I took the day off from work and got some work done on the front Rockwell.
First I pulled the third memeber out (will be dismantling this later). Just so everyone can tell the size of this thing, it is currently sitting on a full size creeper! I had to use a cherry picker to pull it out of the axle.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture192.jpg
Then I started cutting off all the tabs and cleaning up the axles.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture189.jpg
I gotta say the USA6x6 diff cover looks killer all welded up and pretty! Pure Beef!
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture190.jpg
I will end up cutting these tabs off tomorrow and may leave the Hydraulic steering mount. Hopefully it will work for what I need. I will mock up my hydraulic cylinder tomorrow and see. If not it will come off also.

ford381stroker 03-18-2008, 06:27 PM Will have more pics up this weekend.
Picked up another steering Rockwell last Saturday. I am going All Wheel Steer! Got the owner of the local fab shop over last night and we mapped out how we are going to build the crossmember that will house the front and rear 360 joints and have a mount that will hold up the tranny/transfercase.
Once we get that fabbed up we will build the wishbone links that will bolt to the axle (don't like how everyone is welding their links direcetly to their axles). Our goal is to make every part removable so if something does bend or break I won't have to break out the plasma cutter and grinder.
Got the 44" TSL's mounted up on the Rockwell Beadlocks yesterday and they look great. Still need to finish grooving them. I found a set of 50% tread TSL's that have seen some trail love that need just a little help.
4btSami 03-24-2008, 05:58 PM Me and you are extremest. You no what would go good with your build.? A 4bt. lol:mr-t:
ford381stroker 03-24-2008, 07:07 PM called Copperhead fab today. I am gonna order a set of weld on beadlocks for the inside of my 15" wheels. Double beadlocks!!!
sammy virgin 03-26-2008, 06:47 PM Looks like a bunch of fun. Can hardly wait to see the thing done :-)
94Dodge Truggy 03-26-2008, 07:02 PM Stock motor will be pissed off at the new addition of mass! Clutch will fail and t-case will explode making the trail fixes difficult ones. It is a unique build and I am curious to the outcome and function I will admit. Good luck on it!
ford381stroker 03-26-2008, 07:27 PM This sammi does not have the stock motor. The 1.3 was ditched in favor of a 2.8 V6. It is mated to a 700R4 automatic and a twin stick Dana 300 transfer case. The t/c has stock gears for now but if I find that I need more I will install the Terra 4 to 1 gears.
I plan to (in the next year or so) pull the 2.8 and upgrade to a LS1 or LT1 but for now wanted to keep the weight down and see what a lightweight v6 powered Sammi on Rockwells is capable of.:D
ford381stroker 04-14-2008, 06:48 PM Here are pics from tonight. Got the custom crossmember (built by Creative Metal Works Inc.) clamped into position tonight.
The owner Matt was great to work with. He came over to the shop. Looked at what I want. Took my drawing and made it a reality. Awesome work!!! He bent the main bottom plate from 1/4 and made the plates that will hold the joints from 3/8. The overall crossmember weighs in a little over 50 lbs. Pure beef!

ford381stroker 04-22-2008, 07:58 PM Here are some updated pics. Tonight I finished cutting the sections of the link down. Got the angles cut and then welded them together. I used 3x3" 3/16th steel tubing. Extremely heavy and over built but I did it that way so I will have no issues in the future when if I go bigger on the motor and tires.

Santa Clause dressed in a brown suit and driving a brown truck showed up today with presents for the rear steer rockwell. Now that the parts are in I will be able to shave the pan, install the new boots and guards and get it under the Sammi.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture246.jpg
Sweet man, nice work! Is that going to be a 1 link type setup?
ford381stroker 04-23-2008, 04:21 PM sure is. I have the front link set at exactly 10 degrees so the front axle should be placed well. I have actually decided on a longer wheelbase then what was originally planned. I am changing it from 113 to 120. I will be looking to go larger when money allows. 47, 49, 52 or 54. We will see.
blackrider 04-23-2008, 06:43 PM looks pretty beefy.....is your transfer case mounted by the two holes in the skidplate ?
there's going to be alot of stress on those...just wonderin'
supazuk94 04-23-2008, 10:13 PM you should get some angry diff covers hahaha
Grind 04-23-2008, 11:20 PM Interesting suspension set up. I've never seen any thing like that before.
Is it possible for you to go into more detail where the link mounts into the cross member?
Otherwise, great work man! Biiiiiitchin!
Bass Man 04-26-2008, 07:27 PM Saweet!!!! That looks KILLER!!
ford381stroker 04-27-2008, 07:57 PM Tonight I got the Sammi standing on its front two feet. I made some 1/4" upper coil buckets with 1/4" gussets for extra support. My buddy Travass came over and put the Heat to it. Turned out looking good.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture247.jpg
I used stock TJ coils. With the full weight of the Sammi on them they compress to 13 1/2" inches. I lifted the front this evening and the springs stretch to a full 20" inches when they stop stretching and lift the axle off the ground.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture248.jpg
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture249.jpg
I have some more work to do on the brackets that hold the spring in place. I cut them a little too large and will cut and smooth them down. They gotta look good.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/Picture250.jpg
I welded the link on the other day. Looks pretty killer. Had Travis weld on a couple of spots that my weld didn't penitrate
toykilla5150 04-28-2008, 12:14 AM killer lookin! dont cut if you dont have too! the full body looks sick!

I still have a lot to do. I have not hooked up the steering on either axle. I still have panhards to build. I have to finish some welding and grinding. Still need to cut the driver side rear fender out. I still need to do some trimming on the front fenders. etc. etc. etc.

Didn't flex very high. My front fender was all over the 44. No panhards so I didn't feel safe to keep going since the coils and the 1 link were the only thing holding the body to the axles.
More to come! ;D
Grind 05-01-2008, 06:10 PM Lookin good dude. Nice flex pics.:smokin:
ford381stroker 05-01-2008, 06:48 PM website was down the other nite. here is what I was going to post then.
Progress pics from tonight. I pulled out the diff, cut off the old pan, ground down the inside, welded on the pretty new "Shaved" pan and then began assembling the axle. Nothing ever goes back together as easy as it comes apart. :-\

I had planned on doing something real similar, but chickened out.
1v6pony 05-03-2008, 11:08 PM Wow what a killer build.. I also am running a dana 300 twin sticked on mine, do you have any other support to the dana 300 beside the normal trany cross member mount??

DrVic723 05-25-2008, 07:13 AM This is the first time I've seen the links welded straight to the tubes. You know that's 3" of verticle separation, right? Are others doing this on the light rigs? Does it hold up?

why do you listen to "everyone" just try it there is a ton of people running 44's and a d60.... shit rockwell shafts are no bigger than a 60 shaft ... unless u get the massive 2" 40 spliners

Thats a dam fine helper you have there. Prolly pretty hard to point your eyes at your work.
Man that is some sick flex! get us some action shots of that thing and of the helper too.
are you gonna be able to steer that thing, or is it going to go in whatever direction the rocks push it in?
Dont you see that she is steering it? thats what she's doing under there.
adam12 06-30-2008, 09:08 AM That is some hardcore flexing. Can't wait to see how she does on the rocks!
ford381stroker 06-30-2008, 08:09 PM If it wasn't for my wife I couldn't afford to build it. I have to get it done soon so I can take her out on the rocks and show her it was worth all the money and time I have spent on it.
Any girl that puts up with a guy that works and talks about his rig 24/7 is a rare find.
LittleBlackSambo 06-30-2008, 09:37 PM cheers to that. mine doesn't help me "afford" anything, though... schoolteachers are desperately underpaid...
the rest of you need to get out and rent some porn.
Flipper_1938 07-01-2008, 08:03 PM Are you picking the truck up by the front brake caliper? ...looks to be a hard kiss.
ford381stroker 10-02-2008, 06:23 PM My 4 1/2" lift TJ coils came in. Now I won't have any issues with the caliper hitting the bumper.

Wow, whats the frame height at the belly? What was your wheelbase? I can't believe how big that thing is! You'll have a hard time finding a place to challenge it!!
that thing is bad ass!!!!! cant wait to see it workin..
ford381stroker 10-04-2008, 12:10 PM flipped the hubs out last night. I am currently working on the steering. Got my front high steer arm ready to go on. Waiting on my grade 8 bolts to come in today so I can bolt the arm on and determine where I need to mount the hydraulic ram. Once this is done I will need to find placement for the shocks, run the brake line to the front caliper and then run the hydraulic lines. Once the front is done the rear is going to mimic it exactly.
Got a run down at SMORR this coming weekend so I am down to the wire.:smokin:
Bass Man 10-04-2008, 03:39 PM I think you're gonna make Jake Palmberg Jealous with that thing!
cajunsuzukispider 10-05-2008, 12:00 AM damn, I get flamed for a 1 link and they love yours! no, but that's really sweet there, I like the wheelbase and width, though I'd love to have your axles and tires.
cajunsuzukispider 10-05-2008, 12:04 AM oh, I forgot, a great advantage to all that unsprung weight is that the very weight of the axles and tires pull down into dips and keep enough contact pressure to keep the friction grip high. that's why I did similar and used some 2x4 1/4" wall tube for my 1-link, trying to add some weight.
you said at the beginning that you were gonna use the pinion brakes, I hear that will wear out the pinion bearing somewhat faster. a good solution would be to have 2 calipers on opposite sides of the pinion.... you could then use smaller calipers and still lock up the tires easily.....
ford381stroker 10-05-2008, 02:37 PM I was able to get alot of work done this morning. I woke up late and missed church so I went out to the garage and got started on the Sammi.
I was able to finish welding up the tabs on the hydraulic ram. I was able to fix a leak on the driver side beadlock. The rubber seal wasn't sealed correctly and was leaking down. I was able to fab up the linkage from the steering column to the orbital valve. Made a bracket for the orbital valve and welded it to the frame. I made a new brake line from the master cylinder to the front of the frame where I hooked up a stainless steel brake line. I am currently trying to figure out how to install the line to the wilwood calipers. It seems they require weird fittings on them.

Screw shocks!:flipoff2:
Sweet build man. You gonna beef up that tie rod at all? Or do you think it'll hold up?
BLK Scout 800 10-12-2008, 08:31 PM Sweet build :smokin:
ford381stroker 10-13-2008, 05:02 PM I don't think I will ever have any issues with the panhard bar. The frame and wishbone mounts will get a bunch of gussets once I make sure the suspension cycles properly.
I will do a bunch of grinding, plating and gusseting very soon! :smokin:
sami-stine 10-13-2008, 05:18 PM he was talkin about your tie-rod. not your pan-hard bar.
looks good man.
ford381stroker 10-13-2008, 05:44 PM The front was built by a local shop. If I had known I was going to do the rear steer when I had the front tie rod built I would have ordered two. As soon as they finish it I will have it bolted on.
I still have quite a way to go but it is getting there.:D
you need to tie that thing down from the axles...considering there are about 6 inches of tires hitting the trailer!:D

Right on, I'm sure they'll hold up. I mean what size tires are normally on rockwells anyway? Probably won't break.
ford381stroker 10-20-2008, 06:00 PM pics from today. everything is on except for the shocks. i will put those on this week once I get a chance to cycle everything and make sure nothing needs to be moved.

I see some sort of upper link bar on the rear in one of the pictures, for limiting axle wrap? may be just seeing things. Good work man!:smokin:
edit: nevermind, that upper link I saw was the track bar. :L
ford381stroker 10-25-2008, 05:11 PM Here is a pic from this afternoon. Had a issue with my front panhard mount. When I climbed the tree the mount tore the frame. I had to do some plating of the frame and add some more gussets so it will hold. Gotta say I am really liking the rear steer but it is definately going to take some getting used to. I will take a video this week. I am taking it to the testing grounds to see how everything works.

ford381stroker 03-03-2009, 05:26 PM going bigger. have two big blocks sitting in the shop now. 454 Vortec and a 460 both with EFI. Now I have to decide which one.
dweezel17 03-04-2009, 07:18 AM cool rig defanatly keep the body on it. just to keep out some of the elements out and the sami body just looks killer. One question have you thought about flipping the the hubs in or do you not have the clearance with those rims. mabey you travel in wide open spaces?
ford381stroker 03-04-2009, 04:58 PM with the all wheel steer I don't have issues with the width yet. Because the Claws are so wide I can't clear the high steer arms that my hydraulic rams attach to if i flip the hubs in.
POWERSTROKEN 03-04-2009, 07:13 PM What is your max tire width? What size/backspace wheels are you running?
ford381stroker 03-22-2009, 07:11 PM Don't remember if I had added this yet. I am now changing directions slightly. I purchased a 454 Vortec engine to power the Sammi. The 4.3 Vortec won't push the Sammi like I want.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/ford381stroker/partsforsale004.jpg
I purchased it with the complete engine wiring harness, ecu and all accessories. I haven't yet figured out how I will run the factory tank, sending unit and fuel pump.
Last week I got a hold of some killer 20" beadlocks and should have them at the house within 3 weeks. Knowing that they were on the way I started looking for a set of 52 or 53's. Found some on Craigslist last night and went and picked them up today. I plan to keep the 46" Claws and just swap them out for the 52's depending on terrain. I hope that Interco will product some 54" LTB's so I can get a set and put them on these 20's.

ford381stroker 03-22-2009, 08:00 PM 17" Big Horn Air Shocks. Sitting in the house. Waiting until I build the new frame that the 454 will sit in before I put them on. I have a couple of ideas I like for the front and rear tubing. I am hoping to keep the use of the full top but we'll see. I would love to keep the front clip but there are certain obsticles I hit that cause my front tires to stuff into the fenders and I want to eliminate that.

nissanmini2000 01-14-2010, 08:41 AM any updates? how do you like the 1 link I'm kickn doing a 1 link to mine
ford381stroker 01-16-2010, 08:42 PM the claws are the 19.5 wide i believe and the wheels are 16.5 military beadlocks.
the sammi is now parted out. i am in the process of building another one but this time i am wanting to use an all factory drive train. 1.3 liter EFI engine, 5 speed and a 6.5 to 1 transfer case.
love the 1 links and kept them after the part out. will use them again on the new build! the drivetrain is 100% done. I am going to get it dialed in (fresh 40 over motor with calmini cam, header, exhaust etc.) with the stock axles stuffed with lockrites. I have a GT30R turbo that I had on my Subaru STI a couple of years back and have been toying with putting it on a Sammi just for the fun of it. Once all the bugs are worked out I will slap a set of Rocks under it. I will start another build once I get to that point.
Why did you take it apart? Did you get to use it much before you tore it down? Make you some money back on all the big parts?
nissanmini2000 01-17-2010, 10:25 AM do you think the 1 link app would be good for 100" to 107" wheel base
ford381stroker 01-20-2010, 01:22 PM I have seriously contemplated using the 1 link on yota axles and a shorter wheelbase. The link setup works great. I will never do a 3 link or 4 link if I don't have to because this is so easy to build and setup. I had my front and rear links set at exactly 10 degrees and loved it. little up travel and alot of down travel. Took it down to SMORR and had a blast with it. Had a hard time keeping front driveshafts in it and that was my weak link. I will build another Sammi on Rocks.
WillyZ 01-20-2010, 02:26 PM I've followed your build before and always liked it, but today I finally found some cut front fenders that I really like. :D thanks.....
On a side note I've wondered how a Zuk would do with an LS2 in it, gonna follow your build to see how your new project comes out.
woods_runner 01-20-2010, 07:33 PM hm, im wondering if a little sammy can spool a gt30r before rev limmit lol. it may be a task with a journal bearing turbo, but i can see it happining with a ball bearing one. try using an old saab t3, or a mitsubishi 14b. they spool quick on small engines and are stable to around 250 hp.
DirtNMyTeeth 03-01-2010, 11:56 PM wow that thing was crazy. I can't wait to see your new build.
