: Suspension Terminology confusion...
http://www.pirate4x4.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=10&t=013209
The above thread started by Drew brought up something I know I see all too often...
It just seems with all the terms, some people don't know what is what
Is there some way we can define the following on a page here on POR (or anywhere else for that matter) to help avoid some of the confusion?
coilover, coils, leaf springs, folding shackles, double shackles, 4 link, 3 link, 1/4 eliptical, 3/4 eliptical, track bar, torque bar, etc...
I see people here all the time confuse 3/4 eliptical (buggy leaf on standard spring) with 1/4 eliptical, and confuse folding shackle (Revolver, Hypershackle, Missing Link, etc.) with double shackle (4 or 3 link with a shackle at each end of the spring), as well as confusing torque bar (rotational control) with track bar (lateral control).
Is there ary way to clear this up for people?
Dirty Harry 09-05-2001, 07:46 AM I nominate YOU (DeeAreEminem) to do the job. Lord knows you have enough time on your hands.
You can start with:
-Goofy Leaf
-Buggy Leaf
-3/4 Elliptical
-1/4 Elliptical
-Double Shackle
-Folding Shackle
-3 Link
-4 Link
-Coil Spring
-Coilover
-Track Bar
-Panhard Bar
-Traction Bar
-Torque Bar
That should keep you busy for a while.

Why don't you just put it on 4x4Spot and then you can reference it like you do with the spring information that people always seem to be asking for.
maybe we should integrate that into some kind of newbie quiz, like you have to answer so many right before you can register...
we should throw 44044, wags, chevys all in there too
that way they would have to know all the newbie lame questions before they can post them

toymaniac 09-05-2001, 10:51 AM That's a good idea. One of the mags got the 1/4 eliptic/3/4 elipctic mixed up this month.

woody 11-16-2001, 01:51 PM Alright gents, show me the money....

You've got a place to put it, and I'll keep it up-to-date. However, it's time to start sending me text/descriptions for these terms and graphics as well.
I can accept ANY graphical format, and turn it into a web-format. This includes photoshop, illustrator, eps files, vector files, etc. You can either post this stuff on here, or email me direct at woody@ih8mud.com or to bswearingen@nfco.com (for big stuff)and I'll get this thing done!
(Like most projects, the initial week-two sucks, but after that, upkeep is quite easy. Figure on the page being complete around Christmas....)
Who's first???
Old Scout 11-16-2001, 02:13 PM Will this work Woody?

Rover Addiction 11-16-2001, 02:37 PM Old Scout, I love how you took those diagrams out of the land rover manuals! Good example of how to do things right!
Now if they could only figure out those oil seals. Oh yeah, and the electricals. Headlights would be good....

Pavemen 11-16-2001, 02:54 PM The Autozone website has a decent library of technical pics and a large terms glossary. Of course it only covers the basics (even has decrptions of caster and panhard rod!). Some pics on a few how-to's as well. Doesn't have 1/4 elliptical and other custom type stuff.
