View Full Version : Steering issues! Will not turn at all.

I just recently swap out my 44's for some 60's. Currently I can not turn the front axle with the factory steering. Just to give some back ground its a chevy 60 soa on 4" springs. I can turn the knuckles by hand just fine with tire mounted. The steering is crossover 1.5" dom with 3/4 heims for draglink and tie rod with factory box and pitman arm. Heims are stacked on each other on passanger side with a high misalign on the drag link. Its like it's binding up somewhere but all heims move freely. I'm not sure the angle of the draglink but all I can come up with is the angle is to great and its trying to push down verses side to side. I need to resolve this issue before I put hydro assit on it so its right. Will a 4" drop pitman arm help any or am I just spinning my wheels.
Any suggestions?

If you can't figure this out you probably shouldn't be doing these kind of modifications.

steering turns fine with out anything attached and worked perfectly with old set up, fluid level is fine and the rag joint has been replaced with borgenson joints and shaft.

ok here are some pics of the steering. ok took weight off tires and it turns freely with no problems. I went ahead and ordered some kingpin rebuild kits (but everything looked ok) and a dropped pitman arm so I can elimnate the 1" spacer.

Get a shorter pitman arm and a longer quality steering arm .

Judging by his 'quality' rod ends, I would say he has no $$ for either of the above. At least he had $$ in the budget for green paint.

Repeat of above but, your pitman arm is way too short and your hi-steer arms are way too short.

Any of that green wearing off to show you rubbing? If those are 35's it should turn weight on or off. Do you have the PS hooked up and running?

Something with misalignment capability. The one on your pitman arm looks almost fully used up and your sitting level. This is a JMXL16 from FK. Its 3/4x3/4 high misalignment. 37* of movement.

but thats not the source of your problem(just a problem later). The leverage is too much. That long ass pitman arm trying to move that short ass high steer arm. Take the $$ you saved buying cheap rod ends and buy some decent high steer arms and a wagoneer pitman arm. Also, buy a front driveshaft:rolleyes:

Yep, your at a mechanical disadvantage with the pitman arm longer than the steering arm. It's a GM box so shorther arms are easy to find, sounds like you ordered a drop version, which will be shorter as nobody but IH had those long arms.
As for the drag link/tie rod rubbing I don;t see any paint scuffs, but it looks close for sure. Don't forget to post a pic once the new arm arrives

Tricky, that's a lot of leverage on that bolt.
If it turns fine without the weight on it I would guess you have a pump pressure issue.

What kind of high steer arms are those anyway? The do look awfully short.
Also, put the tie rod under and drag link on top, takes leverage off the bolt.

Yeah I got the parts in, just havent had time to install them yet been to busy for the past few months with other projects and my new toy. Plan to work on it this weekend. I will post up some pics once its done. Originally I tried to put rod under arms and drag on top but the springs are in the way. I guess i could of got a 1" spacer and put it under the arms and it may have solved the problem. We will see what happens this weekend.

Well the new arms work great. It will turn without rolling on pavemanet. I would like to thank all of those for their input for steering me in the right direction. These arms work great and are from Ballistic Fabs, very beefy.
All I need to do now is tear it all back down clean and paint it all so it want rust.
