(22) August 5-9th, 2002: Oregon and/or Washington - bashed4runner tentatively scheduled to lead trip in WA, DSI also volunteers to help Kanar/Shoestring/Funny Rocks, but says 2-days min on that - the following has been suggested by Ben W for this leg:

Newest comments from Ben W:
Make it 2 days, call it Little Naches area, minimum vehicle requirements: 33" tires and at least one locker, fullsize vehicles body damage imminent, other vehicles body damage expected".
Aug 5: Browns Camp in Or Ben W & bigblaze to help
Aug 7: Kaner/Shoestring/Funny Rocks in Central WA
Aug 8 or 9: Walker Valley or Reiter Trails in Western WA Ben W to help
MudBunny (1), TJoop (1), tiessen (1), CJ3BWILLYS (2-5), Valentine (1), Paul Gagnon (1), notcrazyjustNuTz (2-3), 85toyboy (1), Erik D (1), Mohadeab (1), Wheelinjp (1) , XtrmTJ (1-3), rob (1)?

No concrete plans have ever been set AFAIK. There hasn't been a peep out of bashed4runner or bigblaze since the initial thread, so I'm assuming that they WON'T be leading trail runs at browns camp, or western WA.

So that leaves us with Little Naches. I'm willing to lead, and I assume DSI can lead also. I am thinking August 6th & 7th for trail run days. I'm hoping DSI will chime in w/ his plans or other suggestions.

Well lets hammer out a date. It doesn't matter to me, so lets hear what everyone wants. I agree a weekend would be better, I was just going off the initial dates. How about Sunday/Monday or Friday/Saturday?

I'm for the 9th&10th(Fri-Sat). Maybe able to get a few fullsize guys out from PNWFS too. Maybe even a couple of Cascade Krawlers Flatfenders. If I have a date it would be easier to convince them, and I think Fri-Sat works better for most of us.

No offence, but anything larger than a Blazer is going to have major problems, unless they have NO regard for sheetmetal. Even a Blazer will struggle, and will come out several inches narrower than it went in. We are not running Powerline (aka Raven's Roost), we are running Rocky Saddle, Kaner, and Shoestring. I won't take anything w/ more sheetmetal than my Scout on Rocky Saddle.

FYI
Club runs restrict rocky saddle to a 73 inch width. Also there is a section that is an off camber turn and most folks pivot the rig with the roll bar on a tree.

Every thing else is cake for 33's and a lockers

Funny rocks is easy if your full width.. and locked.. lots of OP's for rolls though.

I ran Powerline with them in my F150 Memorial Day, and I did notice fullsize vehicles body damage imminent by Ben W. I think a few of these guys would do it. Personally I am going to use this as a dead line to have all the kinks worked outta my Flatfender:D

Even if the fullsize guys don't care about sqeezing their rigs it's probably best that they don't. We don't want to destroy the trails or the trees and risk another bad mark for off roaders. The greenies, no matter where you are, don't need more fuel for the fire.
I will put in another vote for Fri/Sat.

I have a question, how much tighter/narrower are the trails in the Naches-Kanner area comapred to say Elbe? I have ran the Busy Wild and I came out with some....ok alot of body damage but it was fun. Im just wonderning about this. I have never ran anything in that area and was just curious about the trails in that area. I would like to meat alot of the Wa. wheelr people so I have someone new to wheel with. Thanks

its not like im worried about body damage, I just dont want to have to buy another set of doors for every wheelin trip I go on. So in other words I would be ok if I just keep it in moderation?(whateverthatis)

Just past Kaner flats is Longmeadow camp. It is a nice big camping spot where you don't have to have a forest pass, it has a bathroom, is about a mile long and you can fit any type of tow rig/camping vehicle in there no problem, is on the little naches river, and is basically across the street from the bottom of the Kaner trail and ravens roost  .
DIRECTIONS: Head up the little naches road, take a left on the first bridge, take your first left into the campground.

Also how is the drive back down the road with everything loaded up (i.e. how do the brakes do on the descent?)

I'm not picturing this spot. If you take a left (west) on the bridge, you pass Crow Creek campground on your right, and start going up hill.

Looking at my map there is a Longmire Meadow up Little Naches RD (FS 19) past the bridge, but it is on the right hand (east) side of the road.

I'm at a disadvantage with names cause my map is at home:( but the site I am talking about is where the PNW trail jamboree was held in '95-97.
Yes, you do go across the bridge (west) over the little naches then take the first left which happens to be about 100 yards past crow creek road (which is on the right).

As for pay vs fee vs running water etc....I tend to like dispersed camping areas which offer you more freedom. We were at Rimrock last weekend and had a miniature rock crawl comp in camp on the 6 foot boulders that were there :) Half the campground walked over to watch. If DSI or Crash had been there they could have showed everybody how to get it :D

BTW, Rimrock is still my favorite place to wheel in WA. Long, steep, loose, rocky, white knuckled hills will likely be my favorite until I get some crawler gears. One of the comments from a friend of mine after a day of wheeling at rimrock was "I think I still have seat vinyl in my butt crack!"

You can park your moho and trailer at the campground.

"Up There" is Little Naches, about 40 miles NW of Yakima. Take I-82 to Yakima, take the HWY 12 Naches exit. Take HWY 12 all the way through the town of Naches. Then you'll come to an intersection, HWY 12 goes to the left, HWY 410 goes straight. Go straight on HWY 410. Go about 22 miles, give or take, and turn right onto Little Naches Rd.

Sounds like a good spot, I might drive up this weekend and scout out some camping spots. Marker 9 on Rock Creek road is a good spot, isolated away from everyone else, but there is no water nearby, and it is alot of gravel driving for my tastes.

Definately count me in. I'll be driving up from portland thursday evening, and I'll have an extra seat or two in my runner if anyone is dying to go but doesnt have a rig.

how 'bout a CB channel for camp / staging ?
