: T-18 prob
Bgcj5 11-01-2001, 10:14 AM I have run into a problem recently. When I bought my T-18 it had been slightly scavenged. It was missing the shifter and so ky question is are all the top covers of T-18 interchangable because I can't find a tranny with the shifter and then a screw on cover to hold it in all I can find are ones that the shifter is held in with a pin. I'm sorry if that is confusing but thanks for your help in advance.
Grandpa Jeep 11-01-2001, 10:26 AM I know there's at least one difference in the shift pattern. Early T-18s had reverse up and to the right, later it was changed to down and to the right. I don't know if the case was changed from screw on to pinned at that time, but that is a possibility. I believe the change occurred between '78 and '79. HTH
ozarkjeep 11-01-2001, 02:37 PM My 79 from a J-10 T18 has a pin AND a collar that screws down to hold the shifter in place.
the covers should be the same if hte shift pattern is the same.
reverse is up and over or back and over as stated above, just get one with the same shift pattern and you should be ok.
Bgcj5 11-01-2001, 03:35 PM The prob is I don't know what my shift pattern is? How Do I find out what the year the tranny came from because it was out of the truck when I got it?
ozarkjeep 11-01-2001, 03:51 PM figure out which collar makes reverse and see if ti slides forwards or backwards maybe, Ive only looked at the indsides of mine and its back and over for reverse.
and now its apart or I could describe it better, Ill look at my copy of factory manual later and see if it has pics or diagrams that can differentiate
Bgcj5 11-01-2001, 04:11 PM Thanks I appreciate it.
badfish 11-01-2001, 07:53 PM Mine is up and to the right, but still uses a pin. Just trying to make it more confusing, sorry.
badfish 11-01-2001, 07:56 PM I don't know for sure, but I heard some where that a T-98 cover and shifter will fit on a T-18. Might be worth checking out. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

That's true of the early T-18s. Not all covers are exactly the same though, but they will interchange.
ozarkjeep 11-03-2001, 08:00 AM ok check this out, this is pretty much speculation, BUT since this photo is of a JeepT18 and it shows the reverse rod (#33) and reverse rod pivot (#60) I assume this to be a tranny that has reverse towards the front of the truck and over.
I say this because I have a later model JeepT18 that DOES NOT have that rod or pivot and its reverse is towards the rear of the vehicle ad over.
SO I think if you have that rod you need the earlier style top cover, and if you dont have th pivot you need the later style cover.
also, what side is your PTO cover on? thats the easiest way to tell the difference between a FordT18 and a Jeep T18 that Ive found.
check out the followingn photo.

Bgcj5 11-05-2001, 12:34 PM I know my t-18 is from a ford. the pto cover is on the pass. side I believe but I am at school right now so I will have to check this weekend. Also will the casting numbers tell me any thing?
Lloyd 11-05-2001, 01:14 PM Ford T-18's with a 13-01 casting number have reverse toward the rear. Change occured in '67-'68 model year. Some have aluminum top plate. Also there were changes in the tower height, so that a shifter rod that works fine in one will bind in another one and prone to get its end broken off by people jamming on 'em. This is why the shifter levers are often missing from junkyard boxes.

Never seen a T-18 with an aluminum top cover. If it has an aluminum top cover, it's an NP 435. Also, pretty sure the change occured in '79. I know the t-18 I robbed the input shaft from was out of a '72 Ford, and it had the old shift pattern.
FordPowr 11-05-2001, 09:30 PM I have a T-18 from a 72' F100 it it has reverse to the right and down
Lloyd 11-07-2001, 06:33 AM Change occured '67-68. I am sure. And the Np435 is not the only box that came with aluminum top plate. I'm sure of that too.
