: gearing for 34s
Jacob 07-02-2002, 12:57 PM i have 4.86s right now and i will be getting a set of 34x9.50s
i have a 134 fhead and a t90
will those gears be able to turn the tires with enough power to still go 60-65 mph?
4Bangler 07-02-2002, 01:19 PM That 134 f-head / T-90/Dana 18 combo needed 5.38 gears to turn the original 6.00x16 tires, how did you end up with 4.86's, some CJ-5's were available with 4.88's I'd be looking into 5.38's should be easy to get for stock axles. Any Jeep that came with a 134 wasn't meant to go 65mph.
Jacob 07-02-2002, 01:44 PM i am going to get a waggy rear and a cherokee front axle some time this week
i was just going to use the gears out of the the stock 44 and just have to buy 1 set of gears
does anyone know what gears came in the 72 and up waggys and cherokees?
the gears could be 4.88s
my memory isnt what it used to be:smokin:
4Bangler 07-02-2002, 01:47 PM anything from 2.73 to 3.73, if you're extremely lucky, 4.11, most likely 3.08 or 3.54, either way, not nearly enough gear for your 134. What's all this in? Flatfender? Early CJ-5?
Jacob 07-02-2002, 01:51 PM its in an early 5
4Bangler 07-02-2002, 02:06 PM The stock 5.38's in my flatty turn the 33's okay, but it's still tough to get over 50, your F-head will help, (mines an L-head) but highway speed will be tough, taller gears like the ones in the waggy axles may help at speed, but it will be such a dog at low speed that it may be pointless. I'd look into an overdrive to help out and go for the 5.38's If you look long enough you can usually find a Saturn overdrive for sale somewhere. Oh yeah, '72 waggy 44 rear may be centered diff, won't work with your Dana 18 t-case, if you can find a way offset Waggy 44, that should do the trick, some were kinda half offset, you want the pig to be almost at the spring pad.
Jacob 07-02-2002, 02:22 PM are you sure 5.38s arent too low
this webpage says that 4.56 to 5.13s would be good enough but i know how underpowered the fhead is
http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartable.htm
i dont know much about gearing yet so i could be reading te chart wrong
Keith Strong 07-02-2002, 02:25 PM I had 5.38's in my CJ2A with a flat head 4, I was lucky to go 42 mph and that was really working the motor over ;)
I would say you need to get into the 3's to hit 60, but I couldnt be sure.
4Bangler 07-02-2002, 02:28 PM I guess we really need to know how you plan on using the Jeep, if it's just highway and street runnin with the occasional wheelin trip, your 4.88's are probably plenty low.
Jacob 07-02-2002, 02:33 PM it would be my daily driver and i would probably take it mudding or off roading only on the weekends
nothing serious like moab or anything
that will have to be after i get some money saved up
4Bangler 07-02-2002, 02:35 PM Keep your 4.88's for now, what's the plan with the waggy axles, you know they are going to stick way out, right? Oh, and is the front from a '72 waggy as well? That may not be a Dana 44, and if it is, it may be closed knuckle, and prolly drum brake, not worth the bother.
Jacob 07-02-2002, 02:44 PM the wide axles are for stability:D
this is what i was told to find:
'72 or newer wagoneer rear axle(D/44)P.S. off set diff.
'72 or newer cherokee open knuckle front axle
and it is my understanding that the front axle will have disc brakes and will be a D/44
i need the proportioning valve from the waggy too
i dont know what master cyl to get though
4Bangler 07-02-2002, 02:51 PM '72 might be a little early for disk brakes on the waggy, but I could be wrong. I'd look for a quadratrac waggy or cherokee for the axles, '76-'79, the rears were offset similar to the yours, but they were almost all two piece shafts. May not be a problem with your 4cyl. The waggy axle will most likely be 6 lug, so you'll need wheels too. You could get rear shafts with a 5 lug pattern, and switch to Ford hubs in the front to get 5-lug, not sure on what you want.
Jacob 07-02-2002, 03:50 PM i was going to buy new wheels too so i could just have 6 lugs all the way around
thanks for all the info 4bangler
