I'm swapping in 350 TPI motor and I'm making a transmission mount. The motor is just sitting in the frame and the electrical is not hooked up. Since the electronics are not grounded I got to wondering if welding would damage the electronics? Should I run a ground strap from motor to frame to be safe?

Just make sure your computer in unplugged while welding.

I welded on mine so many times with everthing hooked up, I dont think it'll hurt it.Common sense says it'll blow up little resistors, but it's yet to happen in my experience...Have you blown a computer welding before?

I know people that have welded with the computer hooked up no problems. There is a slight chance though that a power surge can wreck the computer. It only takes 2 seconds to unplug it, good insurance if you ask me.

<font color="yellow">I've done a lot of welding to my vehicle with the TPI still plugged in. In fact I did almost 45minutes of welding with my premier at TDS with it running when I cracked my frame.... No problems yet.

FWIW, I have the comp grounded directly to the battery and straps/cables from the batt to motor, and the motor to the frame, and wires from the body in various places to the frame...also the wiring harness has a ground that goes to the back of the block, not sure where it originates though...</font c>

I would recommend disconnecting the battery but if you are welding while on the trail that isn't always possible.

I am working on that exact same situation now. I just made and engine stand for my 3ton floor jack and I will put in the radiator and fan for measuring where the engine goes.

Well off to work again.

PS There should not be an issue. The current will flow to the ground that makes the circut. Unless your ground is clamped to the puter??? <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0">

Did some welding on my 96 Bronco last weekend. I disconnected the battery cables but not the computer. Didnt have any problems. But I will agree it would be smart to disconnect the computer

The only problem I have ever had welding was a stainless braided brakeline burned up when I had the ground on the axle tube and was welding perches on???? I still dont know why that happened, and that rig had a tpi in it at that time.
