: Bonehead move of the week
crawlin cruiser 07-02-2002, 01:22 PM I just finished painting my SM420. I left it in the garage to dry and went out. I came back drove up the driveway into the garage. boom! Im thinking WTF? I then realized I ran over my sm420 in my cruiser:rolleyes:
anyways heres my problem. It seems that the 10spline output shaft kinda fell out. The whole bearing and all. Am I fuct? It doesnt want to go back in:mad:
im a moron.
Dan
wngrog 07-02-2002, 01:23 PM I did that to a 25HP Mariner outboard one time......
Don't you hate it when you do shit like that?
That thing is tough as hell, should not matter....
helocat 07-02-2002, 01:24 PM Ouch!
pontiota 07-02-2002, 01:58 PM I hate it when that happens
I had a buddy that let his girlfriend drive his Vette and he was driving his Chevy pickup. She pulled out in front of him and he drove over the front corner of his own Vette.
SpaceGhost 07-02-2002, 02:24 PM No your not screwed but it isn't gonna be fun. You have to get all the needle bearings that probably fell out and reinstall them. Then the output assembly will go back in. Sorry I can't remember how many are their.
GloNDark 07-02-2002, 03:01 PM OH man, I am so glad I am not the only one who has done something like that.
I painted my bezel on the garage floor the other night (Can you see where this is headed??) Got bored waiting for it to dry so I decided to take a drive and put some gas in the cruiser.....came home, crawled into the garage and I hear this CRUUUUNCH.....
Pristine Bezel with Fresh paint - 0
15/35 Swamper - 1
DOH!!!! :(:(
Aggro 07-02-2002, 03:07 PM now you just have to reinstall the needles into the bore in the input shaft. I've got a 420 at home in the same status- it's a bitch and I'm too lazy to do it again until I ned the tranny again...
Pin Head 07-02-2002, 03:29 PM It may be your lucky day, since you can replace your synchro rings for insurance while you are in there. They are cheap ($20-40) and it is better than hauling it back out if the synchros are bad.
You can download the sm420 manual at:

I need a 3rd gear synchro for mine bad..
BJ On Roids 07-02-2002, 03:38 PM if ive been wrenching all weekend it is common to run something over, or not fully tighten up every bolt, or not attach something,
its late, its sunday night, and i wanna be at home......and im hurrying it up and something :nuke:
TLCObsession 07-02-2002, 03:55 PM Anyone else ever leave a cordless phone on a Swamper while working on the rig and then go for a little test drive?
I have also TWICE backed into my BMW with the 80 Series in my own driveway (usually after I have jockeyed cars around to get the 40 out) Fortunately I have never left the trailer hitch in, otherwise there would have been major damage - one hit was hard enough that I was sure I set off the airbags in the BMW!
As Homer says: DOH!
Sloan 07-02-2002, 04:58 PM I ran over my oil container of fresh used oil last month and cut loose 4 qts on the driveway.

Haha! Ian, my son has done that twice with cordless phones - found one up the street - looked OK, but of course would not work!:(
My favorite bone-head story is about my buddy Jeff who spent all morning taking a worn-out tranny out of his Triumph sports car to swap in a good used junkyard one (know where this is going.......) After lunch he put the replacement tranny in. Took it out for a test drive and, whoa, the same gear jumping/grinding noises as the old one. You guessed it, he put the old tranny back in!
seapotato 07-02-2002, 05:18 PM heh, my usual bonehead move is to spend the weekend workin on the cruiser and drinking beer. So, by the end of the weekend there's beer bottles on the bumpers and fenders and sidesteps,
then monday morning when I'm hungover and squinting out of one eye and not too observant, I forget to take them off.
So, I drive back home from my buddies garage and as I go around a corner and they start falling off.
I've actually made it 30 odd miles down the highway before some of them drop off the sidesteps.
I've probably lost a few tools like this too.
cheers

dr_claw 07-02-2002, 05:53 PM Hey Crawlin,

Cruzilla 07-03-2002, 06:33 AM Yea ya really feel stupid when shit like this happens, I was backing the Cruiser out of the garage when I heard this huge CRUNCH!! This was my garage door, it only opened half way, the flippin cord and handle from the chain drive disconnect, it got closed in the passenger door so it came loose half way up!! And I was late for work before I had to push the double car garage door back into reasonable shape!
This was not a good morning!!:mad3: :mad3: :nuke:
fj40guy 07-03-2002, 07:44 AM Two occasions I would like to forget:
"dropping the engine".... which landed on a new custom aluminum radiator!
Having an engine "spin" while on the hoist, when the transmission smacked the windshield!
Usually fatigue plays a large part... thankfully I am older, wiser, and still have all my fingers. I was milling a piece of copper tube thinking "just one more pass, then off to bed". My clamping was not correct... as soon as the pipe was sliced, it was loose... and was FLUNG across the shop into the drywall. Few minutes earlier it would have gotten me the in the gut.
Tom :usa:
Deep South Cruisers 07-03-2002, 08:59 AM 1. Installing the radiator on my fj60 and forgot I set the shroud outside to clean it up:rasta:
2. Battery died so I went to roll the cruiser out of the garage when the drivers door (slightly ajar) caught the garage door casing on exit and almost ripped the cruisers door off.:smokin:
texican 07-03-2002, 12:51 PM Well as long as we are confessing to Dumb A** stunts a few weeks ago, I was trying to diagnose a roaring noise on the front of an IFS Chevy 4x4, I slipped the CV axle out and took it for a test drive, forgetting that the outer stub shaft is what holds the POS outer bearing together, 2 blocks down the street the brg came apart, all that held the tire and wheel on was the disc brake rotor, destroyed a $140 brg. luckily it did not damage anything else!
BTW Crawlin Cruiser, that's what you get for painting a 420........they want and deserve the OEM rust coating
:rasta: :rasta: :rasta: :rasta::D
jratt 07-03-2002, 01:44 PM I have to agree that the door thing is definatley bad. I've done the "Open the door an extra 6 inchs more than factory Spec" on not only my 40 while pushing out of my garage but also my parents 4-runner as I needed to move it. Good thing a buddy of mine did Body work for 10 years:D

Kyle LePage 07-04-2002, 09:23 AM I tried for 30 minutes to get out of a mud puddle that turned out not to be mud. It was 90% sand. The puddle was 3 feet deep, and flooded the interior of my near stock FJ60. New to Cruisers at the time, I never thought to drain all the fluids!!! Rear axle required new pinion bearings, Front was OK, T-case was a total loss, gave up after about 4 trips to and from work. I rebuilt it, but the sand had wore the gears so bad, it howled like crazy. It kept overheating too; had to power wash about 3 pounds of sand out of the radiator!! Replaced just about every oil seal on the bugger, my driveway still bears evidence of the all bleeding.:D:

Mikeys 07-04-2002, 07:41 PM I guess while we're admitting to bonehead moves I'll cite a couple,
1. Brand new 2002 Mountaineer, backed into a tree, got F*ckin pissed, went forward and ripped the bumper/trim piece off, 500 in damage.
2. Brand new 1983 Toy 4x4, drowned in a lake, let it sit overnight and it froze in the lake, started it without taking the plugs out, bent the valves 850.00 in damage.
3. Start the 1978 '40 while fan is not secured= 200.00 radiator.
4. I rebuilt the third member in my 78 '40, because every time I made a left turn, it made the rear of the truck shudder, after I rebuilt it, I took it for a test ride it did the same thing again, I realized my exhaust pipe was rubbing on my rear tire when I made left turns!!!!
5. Best of bonehead moves, I put gas in the pole holder of my boat "thinking" it was the gas inlet. Thank God I stopped after about ten gallons went into the bildge!
These don't include the usual bonehead moves like forgeting to put the oil plug back in, before filling the oil back in the engine. Running over tools, hoses etc with lawnmower and tools left in the engine compartment. :trooper:
yardbird 07-05-2002, 12:11 AM I was installing a new suspension on my FJ60, when I realized that I had the front spring reversed. Feeling that I just wasted three hours taking off the old springs and bushings, I got in a rush taking the new spring back off. I had the axel jacked up high enough to get my impact wrench under the plate to take off the ubolts. When I was taking off the last nut, I realized that in my haste I forgot to support the new springs with jackstands. Well, all of the tension from the axel being jacked up came down all at once and pushed the suspension plate all the way to the pavement. It didn't get bent or anything because it was cushioned by my right hand, it nearly severed my right index finger..broken in five places. The only thing that saved me from doing more damage to my hand was the impact wrench took the impact so to speak. As I was in the ER, all I could say to myself was "God I'm a f---ing MORON"! (mind you it was the second Hospital that I went too, because the first was going to have me sit in the waiting room for 45 minutes before they would even take my Blood Pressure!) I was out of work for a month, I bartend, health codes and the pain aspect kept me at home to do more stupid crap like finishing the lift with one good hand. 38 stitches and no pins believe it or not and 3 months physical therapy, and I am slinging drinks with the best of them again.
yardbird 07-05-2002, 12:13 AM Here is another..these were taken five days after it happened...it did not stop bleeding for over a week
High5 07-05-2002, 02:17 AM my good one was when i didi a drive train swap and went to a larger tire. i had to let the air out of my tires to get it out of the shop. so i went out for a spin came back and pulled into the gargage.....well i didn't let the air out of the tires first :D luckily my shop is a steel and wooden or i would have had problems. all i lost was some paint on the roll cage and a bikini top.
the second i am sure you fj40 guys can relate to. i had just gotten done doing alittle wrenching on my jeep and i forgot to latch the hood. i pulled out and was going for a short spin at night and i got about 100yards and boom the hood flew up and i could no longer see where i was going. it creased the crap out of the hood too.

but seriosuly, ive seen a few getting around over here (FJ40s) with creased up hoods, from where they have flown open at speed
it used to be a fear of mine, flying down the road and thinking how would i stop, how would i know im still in my lane? how would i get off the road:rasta:
Dan Gleason 07-05-2002, 03:20 PM OK, it's been 30 years so the statute of limitations on dumb shit moves has passed. Back in my dune buggy days, I'd just put a new engine in my sand rail and couldn't wait to hear it run. It wasn't wired yet so I jumpered a hot lead to the distributor and used a screwdriver to short the starter. It ran great so I shut it off and finnished hooking up the new shifter. Later a friend stopped by so I was going to show him how it ran. Standing behind the buggy I started it like befor and we watched the rail take off across the shop, run over my dirt bike and pin my tool cabinet against the workbench. Oh, and I do have a crease in my hood.
Dan
rustycruiser 07-05-2002, 03:28 PM Two days before my 21st birthday, I was working at 2:30 AM trying to finish my 2F intake/exhaust manifold installation. I needed the cruiser to drive to work the next day, and was very tired, and rushing the job. I thought I was done, so I put the truck in neutral, started the cruiser up, and heard a slight exhaust leak. Turned the cruiser off, and went back under the hood to tighten up the exhaust pipe to the manifold bolts. My wrenching caused the cruiser to slightly roll backwards, which caused the hood leaning on the garage door opener to slam shut on my arm. The sharp hood corner right by the clutch master penetrated untill it hit bone. I got a ride in the ambulance, 38 stitches, and a cool 6 inch scar to impress the ladies in the bar with. Since that day, I have been cautious to the point of being obsessive when I work on the Cruiser.

Dan Gleason 07-05-2002, 04:10 PM One more. When I was first married I was helping my wife change the sheets on the bed (good old days) and when I went to unfold the clean sheet by flipping it (like snapping a towel) it hit the light fixture. The glass dish-like shade came down and hit me across the bridge of the nose. Blood all over the clean sheets. Only six stiches but the worst part was telling everyone who asked what happened that I did it while making the bed. Nothing cool like a bar fight.

FIXXXXAH 07-05-2002, 04:27 PM Mine doesnt sound bad anymore. I got a little hobby acetelyne bottle for free a few weeks ago, so i got home, took it outta the trunk, and thinking i was going to be goign back out and i'd move it then, left it. i ended up not going out that night, so the next morning i get up to go to work, havent had any coffee yet, and i got to leave. i'm turning around, and i hear a scraping noise and think "what the hell could that be?" i keep backing up and low and behold, i had backed over the bottle. it was empty and its a real small bottle, about knee height, but i was AMAZED i managed to back all the way over it with it only scraping my exuast pipe.
Matt :rasta:
Ozfj40 07-05-2002, 05:12 PM I have two creased bonnets. One from rolling forward in the garage, and the other one as Bj said, happened travelling on the freeway at about 90. Fortunately, i didn't have doors on and just stuck my head out and got out of everyones way as best i could. Scary but unfortunately not the dumbest thing i've done, or am likely to in the future
texican 07-05-2002, 06:52 PM We need to have Lance delete this thread, if the Jeepers find it, we'll never live it down .........cuz we really are a bunch of dumb fawkers!!!!!!

In a previous life, I was a volunteer firefighter in Ohio. We had a meeting one night and the Asst Chief yelled at one guy for backing one of the engines into the bay with the door open, said he should use his mirrors, the door can get caught on the garage door jamb. THE VERY NEXT DAY we had a structure fire call, and the same Asst Chief runs out and jumps in one of the engines to pull it out of the bay so all the guys can get in. In his haste, he doesn't wait till the garage door is up all the way, pulls out and smashes the roof lights. He opens the driver's door, sees what he did, slams it into reverse and backs up, yup, you guessed it... peeling the door backwards. So, in one quick move, he cleaned a $500 light bar off the cab of the truck and destroyed the driver's door.
I bet that door is still mounted on the wall in the apparatus bay as a reminder.
Cruzilla 07-05-2002, 09:58 PM I'm sure that the Heepers have much, much worse stories to tell, but then I also bet they don't have the guts to admit them!
Well i used to hava an FJ40 and i was in the garage working under the bonnet trying to get the horn working and i had the hood fully open like folded back on the screen only it wouldn't fold all the way back as it hit a rafter in the roof of the garage.Well im under there trying to fix the horn and it wasn't in gear and i must have rolled the rig back a little and the bonnet slamed shut on my head  so what do i do? Crack a stink and throw the closest thing i could pick up straight out the garage and straight through the front window of my house
So i end up with 3 stitches in my head and a bill for $200 for a window
wngrog 07-07-2002, 07:17 AM In College I was in an automatic car wash in a Full Bronco and when the vertical spinning brushes went past the winch bumper the 8274 Warn was on free spool.
The car wash brush pulled all the cable out in a spinning motion and snapped it out of the winch drum and went down the side of the truck slapping 150 ft of winch cable down the length of his bronco.
He had 4 punctures in the side of the body! Nasty move...
Total buzz killer :flipoff2:
orangefj45 07-07-2002, 09:33 PM and i thought i was a dumbass for having a hood come flying off my chevy! just installed a new big block and had to take it for a spin. did'nt bolt the hood to the hinges, i figured the latch would hold it on. found out that about 45mph is the magic number when the hood grows wings. at least it cleared the roof and windshield without smacking them too.
almost forgot this one. another checy truck big block story, although this was in my 2wd "hot-rod". just got done installing an MSD ignition box, wires, plugs,coil,.....
took the truck for a spin and noticed it slightly missing. pulled over to the side of the road, left it running, popped the hood and spotted the cause: plug wire fell off but plug was still getting spark. MSDs make nice bright blue sparks when it's good and dark out. so i think, hell, that's an easy fix. promptly reached down to grab the wire and put it back on the plug. ZAP! man, those MSDs hurt like hell when they bite you!:rasta:
first and last time for me.
one last thing: how many of you have gotten their unit caught in their zipper? that has to be one of the biggest bonehead moves ever, and i know a guy who's done it twice. (now that's the definition of a dumb-ass!):rasta:

Torching the bolts that hold the roll bar on the tub of my '46 2A. GF calls I turn off the torch, close all the valves..being careful....get on the phone and lean my hand on the rollbar:eek: That hurt!
I also almost sliced a figer off on a 4L60E install, but that was a Chev issue;)
rustycruiser 07-09-2002, 12:38 PM Not my bonehead, but someone I know. :D
A few years back his FJZ80 had a tweaked front axle housing that was causing problems. At that time 80 series parts were hard to come by, but he eventually found a replacement housing. Spent the weekend with a friend removing the buggered axle and installing the chunk, birfs etc into the new housing and then onto the truck. Took it for the post job test drive, and only got it a few miles till the ring and pinion imploded. Yep, he forgot to add gear oil after the work. $800 later he had a new front reverse cut electric locker diff from Toyota, and had to tear the front end apart aain. Expensive oops.
Ross:)
Slagburn 07-09-2002, 08:29 PM Jeep story-
A year or so at the local drags the CJ was cooling in the staging lanes, hood up, fiddling with the carb. Cell phone rings, I shut hood.
Get up to the line against a Toy PU of all things. Lights come down, I go- 2nd gear and the hood flies up. Damn cell phones, forgot to latch it down. I stop, close the hood, take off again and clip the Toy at the line.
OK, so I made up the last part. :flipoff2:
Then there was the time not long after that laying the complete powertrain on the rolling frame. It was hooked with a chain from front to back, looped around the transfer. Right after the motor mounts indexed into their holes the chain slipped off the back. One T-18/ Dana 20/ back half of 304 free falls to the ground. Don't know if I'd be typing this now if I was underneath it.

road-goat 07-14-2002, 11:48 AM Well, it's only fitting that my first post would be to the bonehead thread....
I just recently replaced the front wheel bearing in my '84 60. After driving about 30 miles there was little play in the wheel so I went in and retorqued the bearings.
Next day I'm driving home from some friends house after a cookout and it's about 1:00AM when I hear a "ping...PING"
Wife: "What was that noise?"
Me: ".......Nuthin'....":smokin:
In my head: "Crap!!! What was that"
Steering was fine, no weird vibrations....
Get home, carry sleeping kids from the 60 to the house... I look at the wheel and the hub locker was gone!! Seems I only finger-torqued the bolts in a hurry to finish and forgot to tighten them up....
So let me know if you find a hub on north bound 75 in North Dallas....:rasta: :rasta: :rasta:

Sundance 07-14-2002, 08:11 PM Driving down the road..... Hear that familiar sound of ... Clang, clang, Fllllliiiiiiiiiiinnnnnggggggg.... "Ahh... so thats where I left that 12mm ring spanner!!"
CruisD64 07-15-2002, 12:15 AM I'm sure most of you have left their tire rack unlatched but in the closed position. I myself have done this tons of times and hear is THUNK while I'm driving. It has never resulted in damage with my 33's but once I get 36's, it may change though :( but hopefully not.
First time I took my 78 FJ40 off pavement, I decided to go through some sand....fast....... Didn't see the soft spot with the rock in the middle.....suddenly "SMACK!" I get outta there and park the car. I take a look and see that it hit the protective ring around the drain plug of my front axle. After 2 minutes with the grinder, my drain plug could be removed but now I'm left with a crescent moon instead of a ring.........oh well
