My friend is thinking about running 404 mog axles in his new buggy. What if anything do you need to change to run a front axle in the rear?

From what I know it shouldn't be that much harder than a normal rear mog axle.
I know a few mogs that have been converted to rear steer.
The only issue I can see it that the diff is offset to the left on the front, so it will be offset to the right in the rear.
I would personally discuss this with Ryeguy or Chris Elliot of RI mogs ( http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/rimogs/index.html?mtbrand=AOL_US ) as he is currently building a dual steer rock mog.

Itīs absolutely no problem to run a front axle in the rear.
Itīs the same center section. Only the outer parts are different. You can bolt the steering parts to the rear axle.

This is a bit misleading. While they will just bolt on, you don't want to do just that, or risk blowing apart the portal, for starters.
And we have found that F&R center sections are different (at least in all of them we've come apart so far). Larger dog gears on the rear locker.
Wolfgang, you should know this.

No Rob
there is no difference between the front and the rear center section. They are fully interchangeable. See the part numbers and the manual. They are only listed as "3rd member" no difference between front and rear.
The Centers are not all the same, it depends on the year of building, but they are still interchangeable.
There is only a difference between the right and the left portal (gears).:rolleyes:

That's right. And we believe it's important to swap the portals to their correct side when putting steering parts on the rear.
I'm also of the belief that the stock front axle shafts should be replaced in a rear axle application.

@ryeguy
correct, you always have to check the gears.
We change the shafts because we use the rear with the diff. in center.
