: Pitted Salisbury ring gear and a bearing question
Endacy 01-23-2008, 11:58 AM Hello everyone, I thought i'd register here because I though you guys probably have more experience with the Salisbury axle fitted to LWB Land Rovers considering it's basically a Dana 60. I am trying to fit one to my SWB but the two I have bought so far are less than perfect (seriously, change the oil once in a while poeple - or at least drain out the water!!!). Here's my truck (a few years ago):

And here's my first question, would you fit a diff with a ring gear like this?

I think I know the answer but my only other option is one with slightly pitted teeth all over but a duff outer race on a carrier bearing which if I replace the bearing will, I assume, require the backlash to be reset. Or are bearings manufactured accurately enough for it not to matter if i'm only changing one or both carriers and refit using original shims?
Cheers!
m016324 01-23-2008, 05:32 PM depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Also depends if all the teeth are chipped or only a couple. If it is an off road only and you are trying to get it back on the road cheap I wouldn't hesitate to run it. if you set the gears up right it won't have nearly as much pressure on the outside of the teeth. If you are driving it on road at higher speeds it probably wouldn't be the best of ideas but it would still probably work for a little while.
take some emory cloth to the teeth and clean off the rust and try and take the sharp edges out of the chips and it will last awhile off road at lower speeds

Looks grim though.

If that is the worst of the pitting, you'll be fine. It may even surprise you and not be too loud.... oh wait it's a Land Rover, what was I thinking...

Changing one bearing, you'll probably be fine, just try to use the same brand bearing if possible. Then check the backlash just to be sure.
Endacy 01-24-2008, 12:50 PM Thanks for the opinions. 2 against and 1 for...although I like the idea of changing a carrier bearing on the other one. It's a shame because the pitted one is immaculate everywhere else, factory fresh almost. It's about 1/4 or less of the teeth that are damaged and that is the worst in the picture. The other one is covered in old greasy gear oil and all black. Here are it's teeth:

You can see that the teeth have a dull finish because they are covered in tiny pit marks, nothing deep though.
I might just give up and keep a look out for another axle in the future and do this some other time. These weren't cheap axles either, well they weren't free :p
mfreeman 01-24-2008, 07:19 PM Drive It.
It will be fine up until the time it begins to scream like a wounded panther. Pitted teeth are not indicators of a fatal condition.
Keep it well lubricated and I am certain some other problem will overtake it before it becomes fatal.
The screaming will begin well before the shiny bits begin to appear, fix it at that time.
Just my opinion.

Jim,
The teeth or the scream?
I think I am getting into the Pirate mode, eh????
Apologies to your Father.

Endacy 01-25-2008, 05:27 PM At least i'm not completely mad for considering running this axle then eh? ;)
Due to the effort involved I understand it's easier to swap a complete axle rather than the gears / diff centre on these, unlike the Rover style axle. For me this will be hard considering to fit this to my SWB I need to weld on new spring perches and swap over the brakes etc. The reason I want a Salisbury / Dana is for reliability, my truck is used only on the road and is my only vehicle, it is run at motorway speeds frequently (70mph) and I kill Rover diffs a lot. For my 'new' axle to fail would be a disaster.
I'll keep a look out for a bit for another one and let you know!

Pendy,
You are my hero, even when you are wrong you are right in my mind.
I now want to galvanize the WORLD! It just looks sooooo good.

To much responsibility in hero status. Maybe a minion of the grey eyed Athena. Under orders to reek chaos on mortal man. :flipoff2:
Lets start with the South Pole and work are way up. Galvy Earth

I agree, lets start there. Here is our motto: "EARTH FIRST, we will galvanize the other planets later"
If you had and evil twin, what would he be like? Inquiring minds....
pendy 01-27-2008, 08:10 PM Well good lookin' of course.
