View Full Version : Do you have tow rig mileage records?
If you have similar info to what I have posted on my site, I would love to add more records. I got tired of speculations and wild claims of mileage, so I thought I would put together some actual stats backed up by real numbers :p

Let me know if you have records to add too :D

I have records for every drop of fuel for the past 6 years. My best is 20.5 (empty, downhill, with the wind) or so and my worst was around 8 (GVW of 17,000 lbs in the mountains) with a 96 f-250 Powerstroke. E-mail me if you want and I'll send you my spreadsheet with all the info.

Nice work David. I found what might be a good deal on a 99 2WD longbed F250 with the V10 and all power options. It's everything I need but it's a reg. cab.
Here's the deal it has a salvage title and the dealer says "it was a minor accident and all is well" I asked for pics and estimates and never got a call back. It only has 9K on it for a 99  and he wants 14K for it. Not to bad, but lately I've been reading about people getting fully loaded 350 diesel mosters for 19K used. I don't think I'm ready to go with a deisel simply for the cost and exspense of the parts.
Sorry for the rant :D

I recently traded my 99 SuperCab SuperDuty 2wd V10 in and got about $15k trade in on it, w/ about 60k miles.
I call BS on finding fully loaded 350 PSD's for $19k unless they are cab only's, regular cabs, and high mileage...
I paid $24 for my used 2000 F250 V10, auto, 4x4, crew cab Lariat (leather) w/ 45k miles just a few months ago... and it had professional spray in liner and tool box and CD player :p

Oh I hear ya. I can't quite afford it and still be able to go on wheelin' trips yet anyway. Hope to get something next year though. V10 looks pretty decent for milage really. I would expect 8's all the time.

Over on the ford trucks forums, there are always threads about V10's vs. PSD's for a daily driver... My impression was that it takes a looong time for a diesel to even out the costs of a V10, even with the better gas milage, and you'll enjoy the gas motor on a daily basis more.

When I ran the numbers - it would take roughly 6 years to BREAK EVEN on a cost analysis of identiacl trucks with the V10 vs. the PSD at 20,000 miles per year.
However, as you approach 40k miles per year or more, you get down to just over a year or so to break even - so the PSD starts making more sense there.

Don't have the records, but:
2002 GMC 2500HD 4wd X-cab shortbed
5,600lb shipping weight
6.0L Gas V8
4.10 gears
4L80E transmission
245/75R16 tires
Best empty, Interstate tank 15.3 MPG
Worst empty, in-town tank 12.7 MPG
Towing 3,000 lb tractor on Interstate 12.1 MPG
Towing 3,800 lb mud racer on back roads 11.6 MPG
Getting ~14 MPG most of the time running empty
Overall average ~13 MPG
Will send a pic if you want.

Hey TEX - do me a favor and keep mileage records for the next few months, it would be a great addition to that page if you did :)

So, I actually have to write it down? Okay, but since I don't drive it every day it could take a while to empty a few tanks :)

get real Bones....... Ya can't turn chicken shit into chicken salad.
A salvaged title is their for a reason. The auto/truck was declared a total. Being stamped "salvaged" , the vehicle is only worth 25% of wholesale Kelly bluebook value. Go add up U'r figures again.....

I am real :flipoff2: and real poor sometimes too :flipoff2: Hell I can't get another car payment until I payoff my wifes and then it'll be a while I bet. I had a salvaged car in high school, and it was a POS from the get go.

i've had towing tank's down as low as 6.2 and empty daily driving as low as 4.5 (heavy foot on vacation)

Just about exactly what I paid for my '02 GMC 2500HD X-cab/shortbed. Must be the going rate for that sort of truck LOL.

towing my set-up, I get 12 with a/c on , a/c off gets me 13.5 at 55 mph.
just cruising gets me 18.5 mpg
Not bad for a 1997 Tahoe. However at some altitudes and hill climbs, I can't get above 45 mph, such as HWY.50 from
IceHouse rd. to South Lake.

1996 Dodge 1500 Extended Cab Short bed
360-V8, Auto w/OD, 3.92 gears, LT265/75R16 Wildcat RVT, 45psi
Best was 17mpg empty cruising at 70-75mph somewhat level ground.
Worst was 2mpg or so climbing the grade out of Vantage doing 55mph, wide open throttle the entire time. GCVW around 14-15,000lbs. (Merely speculation, the tank averaged out at 6.5mpg)
This is a great idea.
I will start keeping records.

David, do you need any more info for Dodge Cummins rigs? My brother tows a 14 foot enclosed trailer with one everyday and I can make him keep track for you if ya want. It's got a chip/exhaust/bleed off for the turbo and running 35's. And he drives like speed racer. You will have to correct the numbers for the tires though. :(

ANY vehicle MPG records are welcome! All I need are the same things I included on that page - ODO reading at fill up, Trip reading, and gallons filled up - the rest can be calculated.
I dont have records but I do have an electronic average mpg display. I get 16.8 mpg with about 60% city, 40% highway.
This is on a 02' Dodge 2500 6 spped high output Dodge Cummins with 4.10's in the rear and stock tires (the bigger ones).
I moved last week, so this is fresh in my head.
96 Dodge 3500 5.9 CTD 12 valve. (forget the gears but I know they're NOT 4.x)
371.2 miles 21.5 gallons at fill up
shell off, AC on 100% of the time (100* + all week)
50% of the time there was a full bed load weighing in excess of 500lbs (couple with full engines, hoists etc etc) and 1 trip (45 miles) dragging a 3000lb trailer with a ~3000lb jeep on it. Oh, up a couple 7 to 10% grades each way. Trip counts as highway otherwise
edit: Auto tranny (when it goes it aint gettin rebuilt)

specs :91 1/2 Dodge dually w/ Cummins turbo diesel, a518 auto trans ( has overdrive )3.54 gears , 235 85 16 tires. I drive @ 70 miles a day and get 17.8 miles per gallon whether I baby it or am speed racer. Pulling a 22 foot trailer with 2 samurais on it I get 14 miles per gallon... all day long. The stock fuel tank gives me a 500 mile + range when not pulling.I have had the truck for @ 6 years and have only done front brakes and changed filters and oils.It has no glow plugs or controllers to break and never a "tune up", these were pluses for me when I went shopping( more time to wrench on my wheeler and go wheeling), the Cummins relability is second to none. check the TDR for a "million mile truck".If you have ?s about a first generation Dodge diesel pm me as there many changes the first few years. Getttig more power is also very reasonable to.

94 F250 PSD 4x4 5 speed
4.10 gears 205k miles
I get about 16.5 empy on the hwy at 75mpg. With the trailer in tow (6k pounds) its about 13 @60mph going on a road with several sizeable grades. (Hwy 5 from Tellico to Atlanta).
I'm a high-mileage driver at about 45k miles a year. I can't see a gas motor putting up with that kind of mileage and still be able to tow whatever I wanted to.
