: Need pics, and info of Outboard springs on a YJ
Jeepmangled87 07-02-2002, 11:21 PM I did a search and dint find what I wanted, and body have any pics of the mounts for the front, and rear hangers on a YJ, Im trying to get my Front Dodge 60 under my Wrangler. I need info as to do this as well thanks.:usa:
Scout Dude 07-02-2002, 11:28 PM Um...no one out boards YJ's because Chevy axles already bolt in;) :D
4Bangler 07-03-2002, 04:17 AM Uh, I had to outboard 1/2" each side for my "same spring pad spacing as a Chevy" Wagoneer Dana 44, I don't have any real good pics, but I bought a MORE SRS weld together kit, made copies of the brackets, and welded them together to acheive the 1/2" outboard. You could do similar on the Dodge, I'm sure it's still less than what they do to put Chevy's under CJ's, try seaching for outboard projects on CJ's
Jester_YJ 07-03-2002, 05:40 AM Thats funny, I took an 80 waggie 44 and put it on soa without outboarding the springs, you just have to settle that it sits 1 inch to the right.
4Bangler 07-03-2002, 06:01 AM You could weld the pads SOA 1/2" inboard, I'm running SUA for now, and was doing the SRS at the same time, so I outboarded
Charly 07-03-2002, 06:52 AM No need to outboard, that is bad advice.
Like ScoutDude said, Chevy front axles are close to a bolt in, minor grinding etc. I only needed to move the driver's spring perch in a little, and do some grinding on the centersection near the pas perch.
4bangler is the first person I have ever heard of outboarding a YJ.
4Bangler 07-03-2002, 08:44 AM It's only 1/2" outboard, and it was so easy, but I am in the process of ditching it when I do my spring over because I'm narrowing a Ford Dana 44, so I may as well match the spring spacing. The outboarding got a Dana 44 under my Jeep super cheap and easy, with no mods to the axle, and no dog tracking 1" offset to the right. The Chevy housing has enough room to move the spring a little, the Waggy with spring under did not.
Not bad advice, just another option, maybe it's the path less traveled for a reason.
Either way, he's got a Dodge 60, which is too wide to try to make it bolt to the stock springs without narrowing, and it sounds like he'd like full width anyway, what's wrong with outboarding a little? Should increase stability in the front, and with full width axles, I don't think he'll have tire contact with the spring.
I looked at a CJ-5 on 42's with a 8-lug Dodge 44 in the front, spring over with 4" springs and long shackles, that hillrod welded a pad to the axle housing to make up the difference and ended up with the spring mounted almost on top of the diff, with a 4" block on the otherside to match. It was running a "500 horse 400 small block Chevy" (yeah, uh-huh) with a T-4 and a Dana 300, a chopped and dropped drag link, and huge ladder bars front a rear that kept the springs from moving. Now that guy got some bad advice.
patcal19 07-03-2002, 09:18 AM This is a link to a page that I started and never finished. I have a 85 Cucv Dana 60. I had to move mine out 3/8" each side(total 3/4). I also did a shackle reversal and frame stretch at the same time. I hope this helps.

GhettoRig 07-03-2002, 09:45 AM Boy am I in the minority... I outboarded my front springs a ton to fit my full width Ford RC 60. Not hard really, I just built a new front bumper with the spring perches built into it (moved the axle 4 inches forward), and built some "buckets" on the sides of the frame for the shackles to go in. The pics should help explain it. Works well, but I need to put a sway bar in the back to force the front to flex a bit more. Couldn't find a good picture of the shackle mounts, but the shackles sit directly to the side of the frame, in a sort of upside-down bucket.

thats because you have a newer ball joint 36" spring spacing D60. Everyone else is talking about 32" spring spacing.
I have had a GM44 and a GM60 in the front of my YJ with the MORE SRS. Never moved anything. Bolted it in.
GhettoRig 07-03-2002, 04:51 PM Sounds like he's not gonna get the answer he wants without a spring spacing measurment on his Dodge 60. Oh well, maybe my pics will be helpful to someone...
Jeepmangled87 07-03-2002, 06:01 PM Well I went and mocked it all up under my YJ, and the long side of the dodge 60 will have to be cut down a little, It wont bolt in like a chevy so, I guess I will have to spend a little more cash. :skull: Thanks for the help
Supergper 07-03-2002, 07:27 PM I with Ghetto Rig on this one...I have had to outboard my springs a ton to fit my Ford RC 60...oh and no its not a newer ball joint 60...it has king pins and is out of an 84 I believe...:D:D:D

Hahahaha, thats a good one:D actually I want it to be ready by end of summer but I dont think it will happen...unless we sell our house...which should be going on the market in the next month:D
JeeperJake 07-08-2002, 02:57 PM GhettoRig - how did you move your front axle forward 4 inches? did you lengthen the frame at all?? thanks!

GhettoRig 07-08-2002, 03:30 PM I did a shackle reversal and put the front spring hanger directly under the front bumper, that was welded directly to the ends of the frame. Almost had to move the steering box, but a stock pitman arm, retapered so the joint goes on top instead of underneath solved that problem. Not too hard, really. Now, moving the rear axle 10 inches back without extending the frame was a little more difficult, but that's another story...:D
