On my project90 i'm running with HUGE salisbury vented front discs (rotors!) and piddly little range-rover classic rears, with their equally piddly little pads.
now, running with 35" tyres, the rears are wearing out at a rate of knots, and also the rears don't really seem that effective against trying to stop tyres of this size (if i do an emergency stop on gravel, the backs don't even lock up!)
i want to do a conversion like Mike Slade has done on his 147...that is, install the stock front vented discs onto the back axle, along with a pair of front calipers.
now, i'm assuming that the rear will become over braked? what do you guys think? the weight distribution is nearly 50/50 on this 90, so perhaps just running an in line pressure reducer like rally cars use? or just leave the pressure as it is?
anyone triedthis mod before:question:
Jamie
Are you sure there is no way to make 'em more efficent? I'm running a disco back axle, and it wont lock up on tarmac, but will on anything else (especially wet tarmc <grin>).
I dunno about the brake bias valve as it needs somewhere else to put the excess pressure, or a second side to the system. How would you feed the other side to a balance of the front brakes?
I've and idea though........
SLOW THE F*CK DOWN!

You need remove the brake Bias/combo valve in your system before you do any thing. You need to get a adjustable one. I got this one from Summit. I added a Line lock while I was running line to the cab. The rear may just need more pressure than your current system is allowing.

so how does this thing work? it replaces that 'G' valve mounted on the back of the bulkhead, and you can twist a knob  and adjust the pressure to the back axle?
why does it need a line runnning to the cab? or was that the adjuster?

I put in all new lines in the truck and rear discs at the same time. I wanted to have a line lock and having the ability to adjust the rear bias on the fly seamed too cool to pass up.

Did you do this for your disco? When you say you replaced all the lines are you using different brakes?(ie not rover)
Point is will the stock rover brake line screw together with this valve or do you need unobtainable(?) adapters?

Shane,
We go back and forth from the US stuff to the LR stuff all the time. Adapters are a bit tricky, but generally not that hard to find. Call up Oil Filter Service in Portland if you can't find what you need. You can always cut the fittings off and put on the standard stuff, re-flaring of course.
I used a Willwood proportioning valve on the Serious One and can honestly say that no matter how hard I have it cranked one way or the other, I can feel NO difference in braking. We think that's because the truck is so short and the lines are literally the same length going to the front and back.
I'll be using the same valve on the crew-cab as well.
Jamie, if you need one I can have one sent. Heaven knows you've sent me enough stuff, let me know if I can return the favor.

cheers for that Michael.
i'll do the conversion and see how it drives, if there is a phone next to my hospital bed i'll order one from you! :D
