Thinking of maybe running to the pull-a-part tonight or friday and snaging a corp-14, couple of quick q's..
Not being to familular with these (yet), how can I tell a Gov-loc from an open. Can you do it with out opening it up? Does anyone have pics of an open vs. a Gov-loc?
Also, I'd be after a 4.56, how common (a gather not very), Do they traditionaly have diff tags like Dana's?? Anyone have a decent on-line instructions for setting one up? I've had good luck with Dana's, but not played with a GM yet.
TIA

Hold the pinion and spin a wheel. Open should turn easily, as long as the drums aren't rusted. The gov-locs I've played with (not 14-bolt though) will snap and catch when turning one wheel.

Mostly, it was Duallies that had 4.56's...this is good for you if you are looking to stay around 63" in the rear...
Remember, the axles and housing are the same size..so, you can get a duallie one, and then swap the regualar hubs so that you don't have to swap gears...of course, this negates the use of the drum brakes, but disks are real easy.

Setup is easier than dana axles, no carrier shims, just adjusting nuts like toyota and ford 9". If you open it up, the govlock has 3 cross shafts showing vs. 4 for an open diff.

make sure you get the cab and chassis dually if the 63" version is what you want. most duallys ( the standard version) is 67" wide just like the single rear wheel 14's. the best way to distinguish it if you do not know what you are looking at is take a tape measure. also the wheel hubs will sick out about 5" on the cab and chassis versions and only like 2 or 2.5" on the standard 67" wide 14.

Or, just look for a Dually with a 14 bolt...."wide side" duallies came with the Dana 70 rear.
4.10 is more common in 2wd trucks by far, IME....but I think most one ton 4x4 came with the 4.56...those are certainly not common in wrecking yards here though :(
