: Weekend Update 01/25-01/27
Diesel Smoke 01-28-2008, 02:55 AM Well since I acutally had a weekend day off and acutally spent it doing something worthy of a post. I'll start.
I wheeled my frozen ass off!!!
A few pics for those that don't visit the PNW forum.

And lastly my ride, no windsheild, no doors, no top, no heater, NO PROBLEM. (at least when you've got firends to loan you a dry jacket and gloves halfway through the trip, thanks again Ugly and for the haul out to Phil's house)

Mechanos 01-28-2008, 07:11 AM It was in the mid 50's here over the weekend so I decided to check out a new JY I heard about. They set up shop in an old steel mill and have 5 acres of vehicles INSIDE and another 7 acres outside. I basically just went to check it out but did bring some tools with me. Good thing I did... I ran across a "gift horse". I came across a Chevy with a set of 63" springs, the bed was already removed making access easy and there wasn't ANY corrosion on the bolts. I leisurely spun the u-bolt nuts and the spring nuts off with a rachet and grabbed the springs to replace the packs the theives made off with a couple weeks ago. When I got to the front counter to pay for them, I found out is was a half off weekend. :D
uglyscout 01-28-2008, 08:07 AM Fri: Towed Diesel Smokes truck out to the staging area for Saturdays run. Slapped a second set of brakes on my trailer, fixed the interior door handle on my Scout (I broke it last run and had to use plier to get out of the drivers seat), opened the hood wiggled some wires, closed hood, declared truck was ready to wheel... :shaking:
Sat: Wheeled in the snow -- See link here:

Probably should have checked my spare on Friday, and tossed in an extra gas can...
Sun: Tore crappy aluminum siding off my house, getting ready to install a sliding door and new window. Hopefully the siding wil net me a few bucks at the scrap yard that I can slip into the Scout fund :D

NVScouter 01-28-2008, 10:55 AM Went out to Binderbasher's place on Sat and delivered/picked up parts. Then had to haul ass to Reno for errands. It is amazing how fast that kills a day.
Sunday worked on the hosue a bit since the weather was shitty, no tranny install this weekend :mad3:. Next weekend is my last weekend to work on the Scout for a month since all the other ones are taken until March :shaking:.
binderbound 01-28-2008, 10:56 AM Saturday- Led the 'Huge Bitch Run'. Lived up to its name. It was like keystone cops with us getting flats and running out of gas:shaking:

Sunday- Slept in. Turned the spare room into my man lair/office. Let the GF cut my hair. Went to dinner with the GF and Mr./Mrs. Major Screwup. Watched a couple more lost episodes. Layed low. It was nice.
Snoopy 01-28-2008, 11:18 AM Worked on the Racer on Saturday. Got the frame sleeves welded up, suspension started, cage started, body off/on. Figured out some nifty frame ties for the front end using the stock body mounts, and cleaned up the front axle for it.
Sunday I rested from another crazy week.
budget76 01-28-2008, 01:18 PM Actually got a lot done this weekend. Had thurs and Fri. off from school (exempt from mid-terms), so worked in the garage both days:smokin:
1. Picked up a new power steering belt. I couldn't tighten it any more, no more play in the mount. I figure when it squeaks while turning when moving, it's stretched too much and a little loose:laughing:
2. Saw one of my rear shock mounts broke off the axle. Fixed that. Damn, I sucked at welding. NO penetration to the axle with the old welds. Re-welded, with the amperage cranked on the Hobart 135, and had it glowing. (yes, they're painted now. forgot to get a coat on after the first time they went on) Pics:
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/9499/cimg1883resizedgw7.th.jpg (http://img125.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg1883resizedgw7.jpg)
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/3421/cimg1902resizedim6.th.jpg (http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg1902resizedim6.jpg)
3. After the shocks, had the welder out, and decided to re-do my bumpstops. Found some 1.5x3 box tubing, and mounted my bumpstops to it, then welded to the outside of the frame. Hits the top spring plate perfect, and keeps the tire outta the body:smokin: Yeah, it limits up-travel, but I can't afford to replace thrashed tires because I need that extra inch I lost. Should increase my mobility anyway, tire won't jam the body and resist turning. Pics:

budget76 01-28-2008, 01:19 PM 4. Welder was out, so I added a couple beads to the rear front spring hangers. Not quite as worried about them breaking now. I had NO weld on the hanger on the outside of the frame:shaking: ground the crud off the frame, and there was no weld there:eek: No pics of this. Picture no weld, then a weld appears in the next pic:flipoff2: They weren't pretty enough for pirate anyway, I didn't have very good access.
5. Tested out the bumpstops. Flexed it out a little. Damn, my front don' flex at all:( Must be the stabalizer between the front shackles. I think i'm gonna pull it and test it out without it. Pics:

6. Finished building a subwoofer box that i'd been doing in woodshop, but the class was over. Not difficult, but made myself a circle jig for my router. I'll NEVER cut a circle in wood with a jig saw again. Those pool balls on the box are the wire terminals. I won't post pics of those, don't think anyone's really interested here:p

Snoopy 01-28-2008, 01:52 PM Good looking scout/color there Budget.
Binder 01-28-2008, 02:54 PM Wheeled......:smokin:
CabtopXLC 01-28-2008, 04:20 PM Went to the lake house and found the Scout with 4 complete flats. Then I found the rear of my boat underwater with water half way up the engine cowl. :mad3: So I got air in the tires, which wasn't too bad with a medium sized compressor. Then ratch strapped the boat up high enough to pump it out. Got it up on the trailer, and blew the water out of the cylinders. By some miracle it actually started up and ran. Love those Yamaha outboards.
I'm just freakin' lucky.
Earlier in the week was actually better. I got the AA adapter ordered to put the STaK OD xfercase behind my wide T-19. Got the STaK ordered too. I should have it by mid-March.

budget76 01-28-2008, 07:35 PM Good looking scout/color there Budget.
Thanks D, it's definetely getting there. Should be a lot nicer one I finally polish the wheels and get them to shine like they could. Still looks best covered in mud though :)
ih4ever 01-28-2008, 07:53 PM well it was last weekend of duck season so i went out and tried my best :( owell
then i get a "im stuck call" and of course his friends decided to go out "four wheelin" in a 2WD explorer :homer::barf: on private property known for mud holes... so my scouts not able to get up and go with out an hr of work so i take my f250 out and get that stuck, then i get winched out by a yota:eek: somehow :shaking:
then he started to winch the explorer, he ran out of gas doing it, then when we got back with gas it wouldnt start, my friends uncle came out, winched out the SUV, i had to give a jump to the yota then i got stuck again the jeep winched me out, and then gave the yota a jump...
o did i mention that my rear end decided to BLOW UP right when i was trying to yank out the SUV!!!!:mad3: i guess the burn outs and 38's just didnt get along too well:flipoff2:
guidolyons 01-28-2008, 07:59 PM Nuthin' I had to work
Hey Diesel Smoke...You know there is a fine line between hardass and dumbass :D :flipoff2:
Budget76- You might want to add a second tab on those shock mounts. 2 works mo' better than 1
misterfubar 01-28-2008, 08:07 PM Friday I left work a little early to pick up a Glock at a place that is only open on weekdays and closes at 430. Glad I did, picked it up for about 100 bucks less then anyone would even think about selling it to me. Came home from that place to a house full of people yelling surprise as I walked in the door.
The wife started coming down with something on friday and ended up with a fever all weekend so most of my time was spent taking care of her and the baby. Woke up this morning with the same fever so this weekend was a bit of a waste.
It was in the mid 50's here over the weekend so I decided to check out a new JY I heard about.
??? Please share the details on where this place is at. I'm tired of striking out at PnP.
Urban Wheeler 01-28-2008, 08:17 PM Played pool, got drunk, danced.

Thanks for the tip. I've been considering re-doing the rears, don't really like how I did them, but they had to be angled towards the ground that much so that those shocks would work(were brand new and too long for my truck). I've got to check out the shocks i've got in the shed. I figure running one right now is ok, since i'm using the stock upper mounts which only has one section to mount to. Probably run it till I break it again:D
tsm1mt 01-28-2008, 09:25 PM Saturday, I wheeled.. and winched..

I haven't been to the top of this trail in January before.
Two rigs made it to the top, then we turned back and took the rest of the rigs back down to the bottom, and started up a different draw to the same spot - but it was also heavily drifted for long stretches with snow that wouldn't pack up, and ice underneath.
At 4.5psi my 36s get wrinkles in the sidewalls.
I need to tune the carb - the 345 would only pull 5k.
On Sunday, we did Bowl for Kids Sake, then I took off immediately after that to drive 1.5 hours to Bozeman to sit through 2 hours of a meeting, load up a few things and BS with "Ditchrunner" a bit before turning around and heading home ahead of a big snow storm. Especially good to get home before the front came in since I took the 20+mpg 2wd Toyota instead of the Scout.
38deg on Sunday, -13 today. :)
Oh, picked up my 304 block and crank from the machine shop Friday. I have everything I need to put the race engine back together.. so I suppose I should be outside getting to that..

Your shocks being too long might of had a little sumthin' to do with the shock tab breaking off. I would recheck the collasped and extended lengths of the shocks and make sure your mounts are appropriately spaced.
my $.02
scout254 01-28-2008, 11:36 PM Went to the junkyard looking for parts for my yota:flipoff2:
Then drove 3 more hours around the northstate since I didnt find what I needed:shaking:
I'm still looking for that early 61-63 half cab too.:mad3:

I have no doubt that's why it broke off. The shocks were acting as bumpstops, and I guess that side finally let go. I can't use these shocks to their full potential without cutting up the bed and putting the shock mounts up into the interior of the truck, they're just too long. I have to check, but I believe my old ones are too short to work with the way I have the tabs welded on the axle now, they'd limit droop.
The new bumpstops are now stopping the shocks from bottoming out, so I may just keep running these shocks. I'd love to re-do the whole rear shock setup, and order up 4 new shocks for front+rear, but I don't have the time right now to get into that. Only reason this got done was because I had two extra days off from school, and had to fix that tab.
thanks for the input, I appreciate it. My sh** don't get commented on much when I post, so it's nice to hear some input.
Shadow man 01-29-2008, 11:14 PM Some reason I had this serious smoking issue out of my transmission. Especially while full throtttle. :D

I think it was the forward clutch pack, and the 2-1 manual band and the reverse quit working too. Seems the 1st-reverse band gave it up too
Forward clutch pack, clutch disks are gone. Damn SC BBC.

They run turbo 400's in 800HP trophy trucks. Find out what they use for innards. Well, a lot of those trucks get new trannys every race. So, nevermind. Good luck!
Friday after work, ran new hose for both axles and t/c vent to the firewall, finally all vent points in one place, tranny is on a separate vent in the same location.
Sat had to work and started getting sick, by that night was down for the count, Sunday and Monday became a blur, back to work on the Tue.
BLK Scout 800 02-02-2008, 06:21 PM I'm still looking for that early 61-63 half cab too.:mad3:
Man I feel bad..........I'll look around up here for you.
Did you get a cage built for the cab half?

You should feel bad fawker:flipoff2: I've caught a scout withdrawl sickness already.
Yes I already bought a 1/2 cab, but turned out to be the wrong year. So I tarped the bitch and have been working on the CJ7 instead. No cage yet either.
PS.... rode shutgon on a snow run:flipoff2:

Ronnie Scout 02-03-2008, 05:05 PM Yes I already bought a 1/2 cab, but turned out to be the wrong year.
so on that halfcab you bought, there's not enough room up in the front to drill new holes for it to mount using the flange?
What about drilling & putting nuts into the top of the windshield frame for it to mount? You'd only need about 4 I'd guess. Obviously, welding on the frame with a windshield in it is not a great idea, but.....
How about a piece of metal to join them...weld short pieces of bolt or allthread that go down into the flange, and up into the top....nuts all around?
R:)
Scout Dude 02-03-2008, 07:20 PM Yes I already bought a 1/2 cab, but turned out to be the wrong year.
I didn't think it mattered what year...what doesn't fit exactly?

No room upfront, the 64-65 cab is shorter. Already thought about the metal plate idea to join the two, but would rather get the right match.

The windshield upper mounts are different. 61-63 vs 64-65.
47jheep 02-03-2008, 09:42 PM I worked on my juckin' feep... No bother, it's just a Scout in Jeep's clothing...
