The democrats in california are trying to be sneaky by renameing AB1058 to AB1493 and tring to get it passed. This bill talks about raising gas taxes, taxing the sale of new SUVs and taxing us by the miles that we put on our SUVs. Email Gray Davis and tell him we want this thing stoped once and for all.

It's already passed the Assembly and it's on it's way to the govener's desk. From what I hear, he wants to sign it, but he's wieghing whether it might cost him the elction or not.

a copy of a letter I just shot out to the governor:

Dear Mr. Davis,

I implore not to sign AB1493. While the goals of diminishing pollution are admirable, the method prescribed by AB1493 is despicable, and in my opinion UN-AMERICAN. This bill demands that the public buy more efficient vehicles, and forces them to do so by penalizing the purchase of less efficient vehicles. A more effective, less intrusive method to promote efficient vehicles would be to make them more convenient and less costly. Tax credits would be a great way to entice people to buy more efficient vehicles.

Currently, highly efficient electric or hybrid vehicles are very costly to purchase. Rather than increase the price of purchase and use of less efficient vehicles, thereby making it more difficult for lower income families to drive and earn their living, you and the state should make it easier and less costly to purchase high efficiency vehicles.

I voted for you in the previous election. I didn't, but they don't know that If you sign this bill, I WILL NOT VOTE FOR YOU AGAIN. Also, I WILL CAMPAIGN FOR YOU OPPONENT. And after you lose the election, I will move out of California and be done with things like this forever.

Thank You,

James Thompson

The most obvious objections to AB1058 were edited out for AB1493 but there is still plenty of room for interpretation by CARB.
That is not a good thing.
