So were building a family cage for a 79 K5 (making my bud the guinea pig on this j/k Keith). Here is a webshots link to what has been done so far. Some of you photo chop experts throw some lines on here to show where you would brace or add more tube.

We have some ideas, but would like some others before I cut and weld anymore tube. Everything in the pics is 2" .120 wall HREW.

Oh, by the way, NO the stinger is not done either. Photo chop that as well if you want.

Thanks

Looks good to me, only thing I can say is I would try to add some front to back bracing/triangulation.

BTW, I haven’t had much luck with the last few questions I posted regarding cages. Seems like those who work on or know about cages have gotten close lipped. :D Maybe they are just pissed we’re doing our own instead of paying…

I think that the main reason you didn't get responses though is because it is a solid design already. You might want to add some triangulation on the sides since they are so long, but the x-brace on the top should keep it from folding from an impact at just about any angle.

Man, talk about giving me a big head:D

Thanks, I hope that is the case. I have corner gussets in either 1.5 or 1" tube in mind as well as cross bracing the sides. Will also brace the front hoop across the middle. This is a buds cage and mine will be similer but with more bracing, he wants easier access.

Thanks again for those who replied.

Looks like it could use some lateral support. I'd say X brace it right behind the seats. What kinda tubing? 1.5"x.120" DOM? or??

What you see in the pics is 2" x .120 wall HREW. The corner braces and grab handles will be made of 1.5" x.089 wall. HREW. I will make the rest of the cross bracing out of the same 2"

Thanks for the comments. I have more cool Marine posters inside the shed, believe it or not, they are about 15 years old now.

Thats where the Dog half of my nickname comes from. Semper Fi!

Some diagonal bracing on the sides would be good, but do you really think your gonna roll that trailer with such a low CG and actually need the cage? :rasta:

Seriously, looks stout, but what is keeping it from folding forward or back?

LOL, nope, hope to not roll the trailer.

The rear is the shorter of the two hoops, it has feet already welded on to bolt in. The front will be welded to plates and bolted in as well. Keith has to fix some holes in the floor first, and we wanted to be able to pull it out at the time, so welding on those plates would have ment it had to stay in the K5. Well at least it would have had to stay untill it we pulled seats, seat belts and the like. I am going to put some cross bars at a diagonal from the top of the front hoop to the bottom of the back hoop, going through the horizontal bars.

Corners will be braceed with short pieces of tube.

Thanks
