DOUG38S 01-30-2008, 08:53 AM I was hoping to make this again this year but I'm thinking we might not be able to. Our 2nd kid is due first or 2nd week of May.:D Good times down there!

Greatlakeoffroad 01-30-2008, 06:46 PM You just have to pull a WEPS like I did back at the Fall Crawl. Tell her you setting the bar extremely low and to get over it! As far as pulling your junk I hope I have something by that time that runs! To pull my own junk let alone yours!
Shawn , I'm in if I can get the Lana past that fifteen year anniversary thing , and if you haul my junk :flipoff2:

Shoope1 02-11-2008, 04:07 PM married on the shine weekend?
stump_puller 02-17-2008, 05:40 AM No it was the weekend before but was on my honeymoon. Was not able to get her to go, eventhough she loves fourwheeling. She has already agreed to go this year.
PILLSBURY 02-17-2008, 09:13 AM So any ideas as to how many sponsors and rigs are coming yet? Sounds like a great time. Hope the weather turns out perfect too.:)
Shoope1 02-17-2008, 12:27 PM Not sure on how many sponsors are coming..
Rigs will be like always 400+ area...
BigChevy79 03-02-2008, 03:04 PM if I can get the bike sold and my truck finished and my dads built, we'll have 2 more rigs.
I've never been to Harlan, so what should I expect? Anything like badlands? I've done almost everything there except for the private land that Troy owns.
Greatlakeoffroad 03-02-2008, 04:04 PM uhm, badlands really doesn't hold a candle to Harlan in any shape or form. The thing about Harlan is it can be as bad as you want.
tinbeater 03-02-2008, 04:57 PM if I can get the bike sold and my truck finished and my dads built, we'll have 2 more rigs.
I've never been to Harlan, so what should I expect? Anything like badlands? I've done almost everything there except for the private land that Troy owns.
If you think the Badlands is tough you better stay on the main trails in Harlan.:D And bring spare parts if you like to run the good stuff.
Shoope1 03-02-2008, 05:07 PM You mean zuks are allowed in Harlan?
lol whats up.. you coming for the toyota event?
BigChevy79 03-02-2008, 05:14 PM If you think the Badlands is tough you better stay on the main trails in Harlan.:D And bring spare parts if you like to run the good stuff.
Nah I wasn't saying Badlands was tough. I've done everything there with a cherokee on 35s. I just wasn't sure what to expect @ Harlan.
The only thing I haven't done @ Badlands is Mission Impossible and that is because when I've been up there, Troy has been away to let me get a crack at it.
Toolmaker 03-03-2008, 06:36 AM BigChevy , if you like the Badlands you are going to Love Harlan .
Take a little time to drive around and check out the park .
Then start running to tough stuff , trust me it sucks to break your junk right off the bat .
Steve
BigChevy79 03-03-2008, 11:03 AM Well I just have to make sure I can get rid of my bike by like the end of this month to be able to go.

tubehead 04-02-2008, 11:53 PM Ronnie, I'll be donating an Atlas Support Ring for the raffle. For anyone that does not know, these are designed to help support the added weight of an Atlas transfer case hanging off the back of your tranny. This is a great event and I'm glad to see it's growing every year. Come out and support the club and town. Are you all having anyone playing Bluegrass this year?
cvwindows 04-04-2008, 07:08 AM I will be there for sure.
donkeystompit 04-04-2008, 07:42 AM We should be there.
EasyXJ 04-06-2008, 05:24 AM Are you all having anyone playing Bluegrass this year?
I'll be bringing the stage again if you guys need it :D
Shoope1 04-06-2008, 04:19 PM good deal!!
EasyXJ 04-07-2008, 11:03 AM Alright folks, just got a quote from the guy I buy tubing from. If I get 500'+ of either size I can get a pretty good deal on some 1020 dom. I'm sick of hearing about folks paying $4/ ft. for tube, so I thought I'd post up on here. I'm not going to make a dime off of this(actually I'll lose money in fuel mileage), just wanted to pass the savings on to some fellow wheelers. I'll carry up to 1000' on the trailer down with me, that's going to put me overweight so hopefully I don't get pulled over.
1.5x.125- $2.50/ ft.
1.75x.125- $2.85/ ft.
I will not just get tube and hope you're going to show up and pay. The sooner we get enough people(that have put cash in my hand), the better we are. As most of you know, steel prices have been going up and down on a ridiculous scale so I don't know how long this price will last. Send me a message if you want in on this deal.

You about done with your buggy yet?
sw_mi_xj 04-08-2008, 10:25 AM dont know if i will be done with my xj by the time this event is on , too much to do .
but i am still planning a trip to harlan this year sometime .
can anyone elaborate on the trail ratings , like in the 3 range ?
been to the badlands quite a bit , and really dig the orange trail .
driving 500 miles one way , and hope to drive home . lol .
Big91RustyBucket 04-08-2008, 03:53 PM Anybody gonna have an open seat? I wanna go but Am almost done with my truck. Just don't wanna cobble anything together for a faster finish.

uhm, if you want to call orange a 3, I can show you 10's all day long at harlan. most of the trails are right off of main gravel trail so you can play/wuss out all you want. Depending on the weather one day you can crawl lots of stuff down there, the next you can't even get up to the obstacle.
sw_mi_xj 04-09-2008, 05:00 AM that was what i was wondering , i thought the badlands used a 1 ~ 5 trail rating ? went back to their site and found nothing .
appreciate the offer , dont think i am ready for " 10 " rated trails just yet , still a daily driver ( for now ).

If you use the 1 to 5 scale there are trails in Harlan from 1 to 5. There is plenty of stuff there for you to do and still drive back home. Go check it out for yourself and see what you think. I have been on almost all the trails there and the great thing is you can go look at them on foot first and decide if you want to run them or go around. All trails have a bypass. It is a great place to go for the wheeling and the mountain views. You cant get that at the Badlands.
sw_mi_xj 04-09-2008, 08:17 AM cool guy's , thanks for the info . :)
time to get out in the garage and get busy . now that it's getting warmer .
need to finish the repair on the rusted floors , install a cage , and regear to 4.56 .
harlan bound , sometime this year .
PILLSBURY 04-13-2008, 10:23 PM We worked hard so its good to know that people are using it. Are they running the entire trail and all the way out to road again where we cleared that day?? Now its a big loop. :) I am dying to get up there and see it. ****** Is everyone bringing wood with them to keep the fires nice and hot?? I have been working on getting another full truck load this year. Maybe not LEGENDARY like that year at DIXIE RUN but i will have firewood with me. Anyone from the RTP area in NC need some wood to take? I hope we have great weather and am stoked about the raffle. Any idea how it will work? Ticket costs? Will the vendors in attendance be willing to cut great deals with CASH? :) See you all in a Month!!
TiredIronGRB 04-14-2008, 06:13 AM Please don't bring firewood fron out of state.
86rocktoy 04-14-2008, 06:27 AM Please don't bring firewood fron out of state.
WHY?
Toolmaker 04-14-2008, 07:11 AM Bugs , emerald ash bore to be more specific . Please do not haul firewood around .
admar2 04-14-2008, 08:25 AM wish i could make this ride. have previous plans.
however i'll be there the 2nd week of june, so its all good.
harlan is hands-down my favorite place to ride.
doesn't hurt that george is a great trail-guide, spotter, shrimpz cooker, storyteller, etc, etc.

lt1jeep 04-14-2008, 09:52 AM Anybody need fire wood can come by my place and get all you need. FREE.. All you need is bring your saw it is lying allover my upper property were they logged last year. I live about 10 miles from trail head on US 421 about 4 minuites from mount aire and from holiday inn....
PILLSBURY 04-14-2008, 10:26 AM I am talking about nice clean fresh bug and D free pallet wood. Pallets that have been cut up and are perfect for fire wood. I have never heard of people not taking wood with them to another state or event. This is not fire or killer ants or bees we are talking about. :) See you all there. Will there be a MOVIE night like always? What are the choices for this years movie?
Anyone have any recent and new pics of any of the areas we worked on. Action or still shots would be great. I would love to see how different it looks. **Any plans for future work ideas and trail additions?
TiredIronGRB 04-14-2008, 10:29 AM It's against the law to carry firewood into Ky, no matter if it's pallets or not. We have tons of wood already cut up on the mountain we just need to haul it down to the camp.
Shoope1 04-14-2008, 10:50 AM I dont think pallets would be against the law to bring in. Then keln the wood just like lumber..

TachedOutOffRoad 04-16-2008, 09:01 AM Noob question :flipoff2: I couldn't get the kymc.com or www.harlancountytrails.com to load on the computer at work :(
Is it laid out kind of like GrayRock? Like if one trail is backup with 15 rigs you can drive 5mins and go hit another open hill? It looks like it is . . .
Having 700 trucks at Grayrock is still very ridable, but at Morris Mtn 200 rigs and its just a traffic jam:barf:
Looks like we will have four built Toyotas coming up late Thurs night and leaving Mon :)
::drama queen:: I JUST WANT TO WHEEL! ::drama queen::
cvwindows 04-16-2008, 09:34 AM I have never seen it real congested at Harlan. You will be suprised how many people stay at the camp area and play and never even venture into the park. I have been there the last 2 southern shine crawls and it was never backed up.
Greatlakeoffroad 04-16-2008, 12:36 PM I like cash however if you are in need of something let me know in advance a week or two and I can get you covered for the event. Thanks Shawn

Don't get me wrong I love to go to Gray Rock but it's the size of a tick turd compared to Harlan, plenty of room to get around and you can get past a congested obstacle unlike other places where you have to wait for hours.
TachedOutOffRoad 04-17-2008, 08:59 AM Cool.
We are all pumped about the ride. It the rigs hold up, we are going to ride all day Fri, Sat, Sun, and a little Mon :smokin::grinpimp:
How much are the raffle tickets :D
TiredIronGRB 04-17-2008, 01:15 PM Most everything is a $1 then we usually have a couple of large items that are $5.
The way we do our raffles is you buy your tickets and put them only on the items your interested in rather than just a blind raffle where all the tickets go in one lot and every item is drawn from that.
dan58 04-18-2008, 02:45 PM We have about 5 trucks coming down from PA/MD, staying at Black Mountain. Where are all these festivities going to happen?
TiredIronGRB 04-18-2008, 05:17 PM Verda Field...don't worry you can't miss it.

4joker 04-19-2008, 06:53 PM I'll be there with a few friends. My first time there was a few weeks back at the Toyota crawl and had a great time. All except for 4+ in of rain. Ofcourse winning the F-toy chassis and other stuff was nice too.

Yep.
Looked like your group did really well at the raffle.
dan58 04-20-2008, 06:16 PM Just another question. Propane. Local places that I can get a refill on Saturday or Sunday? We're wheeling F, Sa, Su, M. I only have 5 tanks, so I'll likely fill two.
Shoope1 04-21-2008, 12:44 AM Their is a place on Saturday that can refill. Its in Harlan off of highway 840.
The place is called LP Energy and the phone number is 606-573-3020
TachedOutOffRoad 04-24-2008, 10:59 AM Another damn noob post:homer:
Im looking for a 39" spare.
An 39.5" IROK on a 17" wheel would be perfect, but Im open to a 38"-41" baldy if anybody has one.
I can trade beer, $$$, or Toyota parts :D
Thanks
zachv 04-27-2008, 08:42 PM Ronnie, is there an organized run going on that weekend, or is it pretty much hook up with guys and go hit trails? Do you guys have an agenda I can check out? Also, which side of the mountain does more stuff happen, Evarts or Trail 45?
I should be down there, barring any family members with heart attacks like last year..., with 2-5 rigs and most of us will just pull up somewhere and sleep in the trucks or tents. What is the best way to do that?
BTW, I will bring the raffle item down with me or I can ship it ahead of time--let me know what is best. Can't wait to hit those trails again. Is there anything new that is a must see?
TiredIronGRB 04-28-2008, 10:19 AM The event will be in the Verda field (Evarts), no organized rides, no agenda...just lots of fun.

Had a great time, met a bunch of great folks on here. The wheeling up there was top notch as usual and the rain Friday night made things fun (and not dusty). We would have gotten a few pics of some of the better stuff (lower & middle rock garden, pony hill, one really stupid climb adjacent to middlefork playground, etc), but for some reason my passenger would rather ride than get out and take pics. :flipoff2:

I agree the rock race was awesome. Too bad I managed to break a wheel in half and destroy my roater (sp?) in the process. I think expanding it would be a great idea. Seems like a lot more people are getting into racing. And two lanes side by side would be more exciting and give the racers more runs.

Had a great time on this trip - my first, and definitely not last, trip down there.
dan58 05-27-2008, 05:56 PM We had a helluva good time down there. I'm a fan of Litte Jagger and the sloppy trail just after the lower rock garden. I don't think it's on the map though. GF has all the pics. Awesome time.
terryd 05-27-2008, 06:25 PM ...the sloppy trail just after the lower rock garden. I don't think it's on the map though.
Matt and I talked to some guys who said that the eco-nazi's had been on black mtn's case about that "sloppy trail". Something about shutting the whole thing down if people didn't stop going up that particular trail? I don't know how true this is, but food for thought!
jeepguy81va 05-27-2008, 07:12 PM This was my first trip down and it was a blast! A huge thanks to Frank with the KMC club. He welded my upper link mount back on after the waterfall owned me. It is defiantly a completely different kind kind of wheeling down there. My favorite moment of the weekend was watching the girlfriend own lower jager after watching some guy get denied.:smokin: I will defiantly have to make it back down there again.

It's not WET by any stretch of the imagination. It's just not dry like Little Jagger or Lower Rock Garden. Other trails were a helluva lot wetter than that one. :)

That trail is actually in a creek. According to the lease, we cannot have trails in the creek The property owner actually has stressed us to stop using this trail which is cause killin time.

Someone mentioned this to us as well. We were coming down off Upper Damnation when we ran into another group and they said something about a trail that we shouldn't run.
We didn't make it down to the one you're talking about, but I really doubt we would have known it was closed without someone telling us. Is there any way to keep signage up for that? The guy we were talking to said his club put all kinds of signs up all over the park for navigation, and local people just knocked them over or shot them up. :mad3:
dan58 05-28-2008, 05:22 AM I feel bad about that. There were zero signs around that trail when we were near there. The ONLY complaint we had was the map. There were a lot of side trails that weren't marked (either was Lion's Den), and the "unclassified trails" really need to have a designation of some sort. Are they ATV, truck, or dead ends?

The new map should be out very soon, it will have the ATV map on one side and the Truck map on the other.

I think that was Matt, myself and the group in the yellow Land Rover right? Anyone know the dude in the Rover or have a link to a build. I'd like to see more of that thing. :smokin:

Very good. :cool2:
We need to come back. :smokin: I really dig this place. I still can't believe how helpful and nice everyone is down there. The scenery, trails, and people are awesome.
lugie_98tj 05-29-2008, 10:26 AM Any buggy pics? Witchdoctor buggy or red 4-seater?
if there are pics, it wasn't from anybody with us. Doc ran Silver Bullet with me Saturday, but we basically hauled ass to mason jar, and then back to the main event area. Lots of pics being taken by bystanders(mostly quad guys though).
lugie_98tj 05-29-2008, 10:29 AM This was my first trip down and it was a blast! A huge thanks to Frank with the KMC club. He welded my upper link mount back on after the waterfall owned me. It is defiantly a completely different kind kind of wheeling down there. My favorite moment of the weekend was watching the girlfriend own lower jager after watching some guy get denied.:smokin: I will defiantly have to make it back down there again.
that was me, tell her nice job! I'm 2 for 5 in the last two trips for jagger. I was afraid of commitment, needed to get mom back to the motorhome(excuses excuses) You should have seen the flogging there at 3am.

vetteboy79 05-29-2008, 11:16 PM Is that last one Can Opener?
We ran that backwards on the first day, fun little area. Rob sheared his driver side steering arm studs off on that but we were able to fix it that evening.

Yessir. Can Opener. Our group took a liking to it. Hit it three times. :grinpimp:
GaWag 05-30-2008, 05:33 PM Not very hardcore but vids none the less. After breaking a stub getting to can opener and taking 7 hours to find parts/fix it sat, I was taking it a little easier.

akozman 05-30-2008, 10:13 PM Well we got more video than pictures this time, I've got 2 digital cameras and I think the one my wife has, has all the vehicle pics, so for now you have to suffer with my wife, daughter & I.
All I gotta say is life doesn't get better than this first pic, my wife, daughter, jeep on top of a beautiful mountain!!!! I've got nothing to complain about!!!!
My daughter is 14 months old and she made this one of the most fun 4x4 trips I've ever had, she was the happiest little kid, never once cried, fussed or anything while we were wheeling, she even napped as we were going through Rail Bed!

I was thinking that right after I posted the question.
Nice work on the wheel Kim, I thought that's what happened but never walked over to see for myself. That's an awesome pic.

I thought I got pics of a guy in a buggy who drove into the ditch near the trail-head in town..he was doing a double take looking back at my wife and drove it off the road. Had to get a strap from his buddy to get back ON the pavement.
:lmao::lmao::lmao:
bigjeep85 06-01-2008, 07:13 PM sounds funny as hell, i would have loved to have seen that, but what was she doing that prompted the double take?

Man...I almost asked if I could ride with you when I saw you get in that truck for the race. :D I will never forget driving it:laughing:
You probably didn't hear it since you were driving the truck, but when the announcer was introducing you he said, "Here is Chris driving...and I heard the throttle sticks on this truck...maybe on purpose..." I just laughed so hard. Yep. The throttle does stick.
