: WHats your wheelbase at?
nuttzack 07-03-2002, 06:12 PM I am at 94" right now and since I am tubing the rear and putting 16" coilovers on it I am thinking about stretching it another 6-8".
I wanna know what all you guys are running? How do you like it? ANd if you haven't stretched it yet, what are you planning on making the wheelbase?
I like the way 100-102" sounds, especially will all the flex I have.
It climbed like a beast at 94", but it would be nicer to have it a little longer for stability and to climb bigger obstacles.
I know oilburner is at 96", PSF4x4 is at 97", fatty put his at 94" (how do you like it?), but what are the rest of you at?
poppycock 07-03-2002, 06:25 PM coilover$$$$? :flipoff2: how did you like thos summit coil springs? mines at 100"
Rockrat 07-03-2002, 07:24 PM 85.5 and no problem if I eventually go fox coil overs Ill go 95 but thats my 02
twistedmetal 07-03-2002, 09:08 PM Ditchin' the skinny boingers, eh? What's up? I say go for 100." But, then agai, I dumped my Scout II in order to build something more manuverable on the trail(that and something that didn't require a 500 horse 440cid to haul its ass around!). I'll be stickin' my 'Kick at 94." Want more, but that should do.
How were your sidehilling capabilities with your set-up?
scwafish 07-03-2002, 09:24 PM 98.5...but untested, I'll let ya know hw it does.
Tusker 07-03-2002, 10:05 PM 88.5 and wishing for more length :D
SeaBass44 07-03-2002, 11:31 PM 84" toy axles too short, going 97" after summer is over...I want to wheel not build right now...so I will live with it.
Shrock 07-03-2002, 11:43 PM I was looking at some pics of Shaffer's rig in a mag at Farmington. Maybe it;s the angles and shots, but it looks short. Anyone know?
mud-magnet 07-04-2002, 06:53 AM right now mines at 84, gotta keep it streetable........:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

ok I'll bite.............what does wheel base have to do with "streetability"?:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
squirrelman83 07-04-2002, 09:59 AM I'm at 85". I haven't tested it with the 35's yet, but that seemed to work very well with 33's. I'd eventually like to add 37's and about 10" to the rear via 1/4 elliptical to obtain a 90* departure angle. :D ~Steve
nuttzack 07-04-2002, 12:07 PM Actually I found an AWESOME price on the sway-away race runner shocks for $225 each, then $65 for the coilover hardware, and one more 14" coil for $50, so overall price for each was $330 or $370 with both coils, thats CHEAP!!
SIde hilling wasn't bad at all, considering my coils are sooo soft. Although I destroyed all of the body when I rolled it at about 45-50 degrees, but I almost stuck it. THats pretty steep of an angle. I am gonna keep the front coils cause those skinny little boingers are freeking awesome and go coilover later, but for now Just cage, tube frame rear, and coilovers rear. I really don't wanna redo the entire rear suspension, but I think 100" or a 6" difference would really make the difference.
I don't know what to do!! Thats about 200$ more bucks in metal, 100$ in driveline lengthening, and alot more down time!! Dammit, DAmmit-this should be easy to decide since all of you say lengthen it. Alright I will, I think.. THanks for the input, but I wanna hear from more of ya, so whats it at guys?
nuttzack 07-04-2002, 12:12 PM Does anyone know what Shaffers new rig's wheelbase is at? What about his old one?

if i go much farther i'll have to cut the body.......... the people around here don't like bodys that are cut and choped....... if they did i'd drop my convertable body on my frame and do a flat bed and 95" W/B, ect....... but i can't....... and the trails we run here are TRAILS, not a spot you go and wheel and it'll take you back to where you started, ours trails start at one place and end up a 1-2 hours highway drive away from where you started..... so i can't even make it into a trailer queen........ kinda sucks..... but people here don't mind you driving through there front yard to get to a trail, they'll just come out a see what the noise is and wave to ya...... i love this place......:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
nuttzack 07-04-2002, 02:17 PM WHo cares if the people don't like chopped up bodies! Do what works. Get a trailer and have somebody drop it off with tow rig at end of trail. OR move to USA:flipoff2: Just breakin ya balls!
I dont know now, I think I am gonna leave the wb where it's at right now and save for some beadlocks and front coilovers! Yup, that's what I'm doing
Anyone know what AZrockcrawler is at? What does he plan on putting project money pit at?

i asked him about is black one and it was like 92 or 94 "
his new creation is at 102 i believe.
Shawn_C 07-06-2002, 03:52 PM Mine is at 84" and I thin I'll stretch it out to about 88. Should work for 33's. I run tight trails. There is a couple where even I have to back up once to help make it through some of the corners.
nuttzack 07-06-2002, 06:04 PM Yeah, I know all to well about the tight trail shit! Wasn't too bad at 94" although some times I have to back up to make the turn. I'm gonna leave mine at 94", for now!

Your not suppose to Backup............................................ ........... just bounce off the tree for a better line:D
Shawn_C 07-06-2002, 07:09 PM Buddy did that same thing on one of the corners. Needless to say that corner isn't very tight anymore.:p :D ;)
Vermin 07-06-2002, 10:21 PM Hrmm, you guys are making me wonder how well 89" is gonna work with my 37's :skull:
zukstur 07-07-2002, 08:20 AM 100" with 37's and coil suspension. I changed my radius arms to a wristed arm and now have great flex.

His new one is at 102...........
I saw fatty wheel his, and it looked pretty damn stable at the 94" mark!!
scwafish 07-07-2002, 11:37 AM Any good pics of the new Phatmobile.
nuttzack 07-07-2002, 12:28 PM WHats your's at RUDE? What would you put it at if you could?
AIRZUKI 07-07-2002, 03:37 PM wow you guy's are all driving limousines!!!:p
my 'lil old airzuki currently measures out at 81" (stretched from the stock 79" :D :D ) and I even run a Diesel and dual cases too....of course I am planning on streching it out 10" or so( moving to the:vader2: :D )
nuttzack 07-07-2002, 04:40 PM Believe me! YOu would not believe how much more capable your rig becomes with a wheel base in the 90-100" range...that is until you have it. WIth 37" and a 94" base my breakover angles are pretty good and never really get high centered. I will say one thing though, too much wheelbase sucks were the trails are tight.
In stock form and even in the 80" I think the sammi's are just too short for me, especially when they don't flex much...just plain scarry seeing that much sky:eek:
I am curious to hear what rudezuk thinks about his wheelbase with the 37's.
AIRZUKI 07-07-2002, 09:57 PM the thing is ..... my POS is already pretty damn capable, if I stretch it out ....I could literally scare the sh!t out of myself! ;) ;) ;)

Mine's at 85". MP will be around 96-98". I should have my tub shortly so I can put the motor in and mock up the dual t-case and see how short my driveline will end up. If it's too short I may go longer wb. FWIW the black Samurai driven by my buddy Erik (V8 powered) is at 98", It climbs real well but I can definately see wanting 38's if I go that long. He's got 36's on there now and tends to drag his cross members quite a bit.
nuttzack 07-07-2002, 10:12 PM I think you driveline should be at a decent length at 96-98". If I was you though I would definitelty go 38 sx's with 100" wb
BnTMike 07-08-2002, 02:58 PM Im at 110"s and love it.. when I start the sami buggy I headed out to 114-116"'s
nuttzack 07-08-2002, 03:03 PM now that's long:eek: what size of tire you planning on runnin?
BnTMike 07-08-2002, 03:12 PM 37's... same as now....
mike-
Shrock 07-08-2002, 07:50 PM easier to start with a suburban :flipoff2: :D
zukstur 07-08-2002, 08:12 PM I see where Shaffers buggy weighs 2,633 lbs. Mine is'nt much more then that, it tilts the scales at 2,710 lbs.
BnTMike 07-09-2002, 09:38 AM cutting brakes and Arb's ... makes a long wb rig turn like a short one and you get to climb and drop off some really big stuff
mike-
350 Samurai 07-09-2002, 10:43 AM I have coils and 4-link and I stretched mine out to 115", but I,m
running 44" tires, so I don't have any clearance problems
underneath. It really depends on what type of terrain you are
going to be on most of the time.
psf4x4 07-10-2002, 06:23 PM i like the 97" alot. i wheeled with a couple of sami last sept. in tellico and you could really tell a difference over stock. most of the wheeling i've done has been with high5 and he sits at about 100" so i couldn't really tell how effective it was. i still would like to move the front about 2-3" forward more but thats just cause i run 36's. bottom line is i like it i'm not scared to go a couple to-three more "s. different wheel base works different terrain. :usa:

Yah, Chris scooted right up the Helicopter Pad where I struggled for a little while. But I've Never rolled on Slickrock! :p ;)
psf4x4 07-10-2002, 09:08 PM yeah, got no come back for that one...are you guys getting back together this fall so i can come up there and and show you what not to do on slickrock. i took the same line i took last sept. i've watched the video a 100 times and she was going to flatten out and i let off the gas. live and learn.
nuttzack 07-10-2002, 10:33 PM what kind of springs are you running PSF? what about gears?

he is running yj springs and 5.38's in the dana44's and was running a 4to1 t-case but his sumo 6to1 is on it's way.
nuttzack 07-11-2002, 08:40 AM his sumo 6to1 is on it's way
Mine will be soon too, hopefully!
psf4x4 07-11-2002, 08:50 PM i just got mine today. but my dumb arse sent my shifter with my 4:1 when i sold it. so now i have to find one of those. :usa:

call me. ron has a broken sami t-case that has a good shifter. i asked him and he said you can have it.:D
rokcrln 07-12-2002, 03:46 PM I am getting ready to start the parts collection for my sami/tube project and I will be going for a 102" WB. I will be running 37"+ tire size with d44- 4whl steer- ARBs- and cutting brks so I don't see a prob with tight trails. Sh!t after running wrecking ball in a EB their are no more tight trails!!
