I've been playing around with the idea of putting a Caddy 500 in my '83 Blazer that is my DD/ tow rig. I want to keep the sm-465 it has now, but I don't want to spend $300 for a flywheel (I'm a broke college kid). Is there a way to use a flywheel from another engine (460 perhaps)? Has anyone ever tried this? I also would use the bellhousing adapter from Cad Company, does this move the tranny back enough to make a difference? TIA :D

No one? Am I crazy for thinking of doing this? It really wouldn't be that hard would it, you would just have to get a flywheel with the right distance from mounting surface to clutch surface right? And you would have to get the right number of teeth on the flywheel, but most chey flywheels are the same aren't they? Oh well, I guess its time to scrounge the junk yards!!

You also have to worry about the bolt pattern on the end of the crank and get the balace right. I can't remember if the big Caddies are internaly or externaly balanced, but If you found out you might be able to get a machine shop to redrill and balace a junkyard flywheel to the engine, but by then it would be easier to buy the fly wheel if you can get one for $300.

PS, where can one get a Caddie flywheel for $300?

And you have to have the crank drilled for a pilot bushing too.

http://www.cad500parts.com/

You have to download the catalog, or just call them. The number is (505)823-9340. But basically what they say in the catalog is that it is a steel billet flywheel that uses a caddy starter and 11, 11.5 or 12 inch clutch. I guess that wouldn't be a bad deal either, I just thought there might be someone on the board who knew of a different flywheel that would work. There is also a thread in the Chevy forum and I think someone on the board is running the cad company flywheel, but I don't remember who. They also sell a bellhousing adapter to change from bop to chevy for $99. Hope that helps. :bounce2:
