What is the part called where the box attaches to the steering shaft. My box is leaking from there and the local parts guys are idiots.

thanks Dan

Input shaft seal, doubtful you can stop the leak, at home, usually the shaft is grooved.
Maybe easier to swap for a reman box or find another used one.

I may be a puss but I would just get a reman box. Mine is lifetime gaurentee and it cost $129

I think it's called a sector shaft and you can buy a kit for $25-$30 and install it, I just did mine, works fine, just replaced the seal, dust boot and bearing.

on a semi-related note. I have a very loose 3.25 turn box (yup, I've adjusted it, but it's just ooold) that I'd like to swap for a 4-turn box... they should fit the same, bolt up the same, etc., right?

You have to be careful though. There are a couple differnt input shafts. I went through all this crap when I got my new box.
